Let's Go Get Away Empty Let's Go Get Away

Post by kayla 7/3/2014, 3:07 pm

Oh gods that felt good, Celaena thought to herself as she laid down on a bed of sand. She had taken off her shoes and socks so that her bare feet could relish in the flexible grains of sand all around her. The sun glared down on her skin but it barely had an effect on her since the Forges were practically her home and she could resist the weak heat of the ball of fire in the sky. Calling Helios weak? That's a first. She'd been inside all day with nothing except the sound of fire against metal and the heat flickering against her skin along with the occasional small talk she had with her siblings. But that wasn't always fun, she really needed to get a friend. A girlfriend would be nice too, she sighed in want. There was the occasional girl in Chicago or another at Camp that Celaena might thought would have a little interest in her but to no prevail: The only company she got were fires and mechanical things. Gods she had got to stop being so depressing. It was kind of annoying even to herself. Her hair, which was always in a ponytail except for the rare moments she let it down, twisted around in the sand until she was sure that there was plenty in her hair. But she didn't care. A cool breeze, the right amount of heat, the sounds of the water lapping against the sand: Nothing could ruin this moment of serenity.

Yes, Kory was back at it again. She hadn't made a quick buck in almost two days and she was starting to really feel it. After hitting the courtyard, she had wandered her way to the beach wearing her favorite pink and white crop-top with her high-waist denim shorts over her swimsuit. Her feet, clad in white low top Converse without any socks, pranced her way along the sand as she looked for her next victim. There was this tall guy in green shorts, but he was probably too shy to talk to a stranger. The beach was practically empty other than Kory, the Green Giant, and...Perfect. Kory's squinted purple gaze rested on a girl in the sand who didn't look too much older than her. With her hand reaching into her pocket for her pack of cards, Kory hurried her way over to the girl.
"Hey." Her Cajun accent asked as she sat down next to the girl. Kory must admit - she was easy on the eyes. But she reminded herself of her favorite phrase: Business is Business. She couldn't have herself getting all soft over some girl. not now, anyways. So she just shuffled her deck of cards.

"Hey." Celaena opened her eyes, putting a hand over her eyes to block out the bright sunlight. She looked beside her seeing a girl with flaming red hair sitting next to her. She pushed herself up by the elbows and half laid, half sat on the warm sand. Her loose black racerback tank rode up to her stomach before she pulled it back down and faced the other girl with a raised eyebrow. She took in the cards in the girl's hands as the girl shuffled them. She wondered what she was doing with cards, she didn't really see a lot of people with cards unless it was a couple of Hermes kids trying to scam her. She wondered vaguely if the girl was a Hermes kid too but got an idea that she wasn't.
"Hey there stranger," Celaena greeted with an easy going smirk. "What's up with the cards?"

Kory smiled a little at the girl and looked down at her deck. The cards danced around the palm of her hands, her fingers, her forearms as she moved them half-heartedly as if she was somewhat concentrated and somewhat spaced out at the action. She couldn't just say, "I'm gonna take ya money and try to not see you again. Toodles." No, that was bad business. Kory mapped her whole plan out when she was getting somebody's cash. Judging by this one, her job might be a little harder.
"The cards? Nothin' really. I just like shufflin' them...It's relaxin'." The 15-year-old giggled a bit and went to shuffling the cards with one hand, the other tucking a strand of her dyed hair behind her ear. Gods, even when it was tied back her hair managed to escape. Kory stopped messing with her cards to look back up at her.
"It's real hard to find someone who's interested in playin', so I just do this. My name's Kory, by the way. Pleasure t'meet you."

"I'm Celaena, pleasure to meet you too." Celaena replied, untying her hair from its ponytail and ruffling it up to try and get the sand loose from her dark hair. She combed through it a few times and tied it back up after everything was in tip top shape. She wiped her back a bit so that sand could get off of there too. She didn't bother for the back of her legs since she was too lazy to get up, rather comfortable in her bed of sand.
"Just shuffling them seems kind of boring." She said rather bluntly. "I can play with you but I don't know that many card games just to warn ya unless you'd wanna teach me a few." She shrugged. She'd never been one to play card games rather than the simple ones like goldfish and stuff but there was a first time for everything. Celaena brushed the sand off her bracelets delicately around the button on them so the blades didn't accidently retract and stab the poor girl in the face. No not girl, her name was Kory.

Kory's eyes gleamed mischievously but her face remained blank and friendly. Celaena wanted to play, which was perfect. Now it was time to teach her which game Kory wanted to play.
"There's this game called Blackjack that my Ma taught me how to play." That was a lie. Kory had learned how to play Blackjack from sneaking into a casino behind her "Ma". Jenni wouldn't never spent all of that time trying to teach her how to play. Patience meant getting caught. "It's real simple once ya get the hang of it." That was a lie, too. Playing any game with Kory was like being blindfolded and told to find a needle in a haystack. You couldn't see, so you ended up finding the needle when it was embedded in your behind. She opened up her deck of cards between her fingers like a fan, turning around each one to reveal their distinct marking whether it be a numbered heart, a king of queen of spades, an ace of diamonds, or the rare Joker.
"I could teach ya if you'd like. 'Course it's a gamblin' game..." Kory shrugged her shoulders as if she were conflicted on the fact that one of them could lose their money. She chewed her cheek and closed her fan of cards, going back to just shuffling them.

Celaena narrowed her eyes when she heard the word gambling. She grew up from a poor family so she was always stingy over her money even though her mom's auto shop became a hit and they finally had more than enough to make them middle class. Despite that, she never trusted things like gambling in fear that if she lost money then her and her mom would just go back to barely making it. She inspected Kory from head to toe like she was hiding a bomb but dismissed it.
"Gambling? What are you, a Hermes kid?" Celaena asked with a small half smile and a raised eyebrow. "I'll play one game with you. One only. Drachmas or mortal money?"
Celaena lifted an index finger, the magnetism that bounced off of it rattled the small wallet she kept in her pocket and she made an estimate of how much she had of each. She put her finger down. She had enough money for one game.

"Hermes kid?!" Kory gasped in horror, taking offense. She looked to the sky as if expecting Celaena to be zapped into some sort of porpoise. "Bett'a not let m'father hear that. Mr. D wouldn't be too happy 'bout being called Hermes."
Mumbling that last part, Kory looked back to her customer with knitted eyebrows. Celaena had agreed to play one game with her, which would be enough.
"Anythin' you got. Them drachs would be the most convenient, though." Her cheeky smile returned as she dealt out the cards and explained the basis of the game ((ooc: Which I barely know myself so let's not and say she did okay? okay)) in a teacher-like voice. She purposely left out a few rules for her own benefit. Kory the took out her little brown-knit sack o' drachmas from her pocket. If the look in her eyes wasn't indication enough that she was probably up to no good, then it was her legendary Sack o' Drachs.

Post by kayla 7/9/2014, 2:11 am

"Oh so Dionysus, sorry bout the mistake then." Celaena apologized with a small chuckle. So they were playing Blackjack? Although Celaena didn't know a lot of card games, she certainly knew about Blackjack. When she was little she would usually watch two older men play different games together and each time they did they would teach her how to play. Blackjack was the only card game that they liked to play far often than any other although it was only one of the two that they did play. That and poker though she gave up on that since it was too complex. So she could tell when Kory was leaving out a couple rules when she 'taught' it to her.
Her eyes widened when they saw Kory take out a little sack of money which she presumed to be drachmas only to narrow into a suspicious glare for a brief moment. Celaena lowered her eyes and could literally already feel her suspicion and distrust waving through the air like heatwaves. Hermes and Aphrodite kids were usually the ones she held her guard up for since one was a patron of thieves and the other's children had an old tradition for breaking hearts but she guessed she could keep her guard up around this daughter of Dionysus.
"Alright then, pass out the two cards."

Kory nodded at her apology, but kept the majority of her attention on both the dealing of cards and Celaena's body language. The Sack o' Drachs was tossed in between the two, more towards the side and away from the deck. The motion caused her prizes of thee day to chime musically, but Kory's eyes were trained on her opponent as she held the two cards in her hands. Celaena's eyes were narrowed, her body looked tensed up like a spring. Kory connected this with what she had learned from her brief visit to Harlem. She knew that Kory was lying, missing pieces of information about the game. Which indicated that she either played this game or watched someone very carefully before. Her pink lips pulled into one of her wry smiles and she chuckled, going on playing to game. Looks like they were both hiding something.
"So, Celaena. Who's ya godparent?" She asked at one point to break the suspicious silence. Don't get her wrong. She liked the silence...it was full of tension and made the game a bit more interesting.

"Hephaestus." Celaena replied simply, closing her eyes for a millisecond and rolling her neck. She did the same to her shoulders so she could loosen up since she felt so stiff. Maybe it was from all the standing up she did in the forges. She really needed to get out more. Maybe exercise too. Who was she kidding, she hated exercising, she'd rather stay in her bunk all day.
Celaena picked up her two cards, an ace and a ten, eleven in total. She needed another ten. Her eyes flickered up to Kory, watching her carefully. "Hit. So what's the deal, if I win I get the drachs and vice versa or did you have somethin' else in mind?"

"Hephaestus." Kory repeated in a musical tone. She looked over Celaena once more and decided that she could be seen as a Hephaestus kid if you, like, closed one eye and tilted your head to the side. How she presented herself so far, though, would say otherwise. She seemed tough. Almost as tough as Lex, so Kory had to give her that at least.
The daughter of Dionysus unfolded her legs from beneath her and rolled onto her stomach, perching her upper body up on her elbows so she could carry on the game in a more relaxed way. She flipped her card up and forced her smile to remain hidden under a placid face. An ace. "Insurance?" The younger girl offered instead with a notched left eyebrow before continuing.
"You win, you get m'drachs. I win, I get yours. Simple's that." Kory shrugged to emphasize her words.

The insurance was an attractive offer, it truly was, it almost made her take it. But after learning from the two old guys on her street, it was also held advantages. Advantages for someone other than herself. Besides, Celaena didn't rely on chance her whole life. She relied on straight forward facts. With a grin, she bit her lip and shook her head to signal her refusal of the deal. She'd rather risk it traditionally.
"Half. I'm only giving you half if you win and if I win, I get half. My pride would be wounded if I lost all my money to some card game." Celaena said.
"Well actually I don't even know how much you got in there," She started eyeing the sack. "So we'll wager 40 for the game." She stated with a look that dared the other girl to challenge her.

"If you say so." Kory replied with a smirk and a shrug, obliging by Celaena's wishes and dealing her another card face down. Yes, the deck might've been a tiny bit rigged. Not enough to make her lose maybe, but enough to keep the game interesting. When the topic of money came into the picture, Kory's ears automatically perked up. She was listening.
"Hm. Half? Well, I see where ya comin' from." Kory had indeed lost a couple bets back in the day. Most of them to her mother or an unnamed Criss Angel impersonator, but she still knew the feel. Then her little baggie was soon brought up into the conversation.
"This ol' thing? I got about a hundred of those little suckers in here." She picked up the sack and rattled the coins on the inside. The bag itself looked nearly ready to burst, but Kory had it secured. Placing the bag back down, she met Celaena's daring gaze with a calm, unmoved look. "40 it is, then."

Celaena nodded lightly when Kory agreed and allowed herself the ease to relax. She gave a little yawn before laying on her stomach like the daughter of Dionysus and fanned herself a little with the three cards in her hand. An ace, a ten, and a two. Thirteen. Ugh it was going to be hard to actually get to 21. She needed an eight. She prayed to the gods that the next card she got didn't make her go over 21.
"Hit." She said, biting her lip as she waited for the next card. Her toes curled in anticipation and she glanced at her cards and back to the other girl multiple times.

Kory gave her another card, hoping that she had remembered to keep the highest cards near this part of the deck. A light breeze blew in from the water's direction, blowing some sand into Kory's face. The girl grumbled to herself as she brushed her face off in annoyance. All of this sand. Why couldn't she have found Celaena in the nice sand-free courtyard like the others? Sure it was a natural pedicure, but it was hectic trying to get all of it out of her hair when the evening came along. Anyway, she had yawned as well as the game continued, watching the sun off in the distance begin to lower.
"So..." Kory prompted. The game had grown to quiet, unable to keep her full attention.

Celaena picked up her card. A ten. She groaned and slapped her cards against the sand. Bust, it'd gone over 21. Of course she'd lose with her wretched luck. Unless it wasn't just luck.
"Aw c'mon, your deck must be like rigged or something." Celaena whined like a child. "Can't we do a redo?"
She hated losing and usually she never did but in card games it seemed to follow the rule,"All's fair in love and war" though it had nothing to do with the two latter.

Kory peeked at Celaena's cards that she slammed down and slowly grinned. She'd gone over 21. Kory's eyes trained on hers as she held out a hand expectantly, bended her fingers at the joints as if to say C'mon! Hurry up with the cash! When she had asked for a redo, the trickster just shook her head and sighed.
"Sorry, hun. No rigs, no redoes. I'm an honest girl." Even as she said this she was lying. With her free hand she gathered up her cards and put them away inside of the box in her back pocket. Rigged? More like "personally enhanced".

"Really?" Celaena taunted. "Then you wouldn't mind if I took a look at your deck right?"
She held out her own hand with a look of disbelief and amusement on her face. If there wasn't anything wrong with the deck then fine, she'd give her the money and leave her alone. After all, she had nothing to hide right? A quick check couldn't hurt. She wiggled her fingers lightly saying in a light ing song tone, "I'm waiting."

Kory giggled flirtatiously, but stopped abruptly. She had a rule to abide by. Plus, she didn't know if Celaena was straight or not. But more importantly, she had a rule to abide by. Kory settled with a playful smile as she took her time reaching her deck, moving around some cards sneakily. When she finished, she handed the closed box to Celaena with the cards inside.
"Look all ya want, cher." Kory said innocently. She folded her hands in the sand and rested her chin atop of them. Waiting.

Celaena catches a glimpse of Kory's fingers moving around in the deck, her hands out of sight as she turns around and hands it to her. She raises her eyebrow and looks at the cards and pulls it individually from one hand to the other.
"Saw that," She laughs as she keeps looking at the cards, hoping Kory'll rise to the bait. "Innocent my a**. You're like a fox, hmm a vixen.." She recalls.

Kory was expecting to run before she was injured when Celaena had realized that she did in fact rig the deck. Her body flinched when she first heard her words as she was preparing to be stricken before she had a chance to escape. She had dealt with plenty of people's anger before whether it'd be words or physical action. She wasn't afraid of being hit or anything even though it was probable. She wasn't even afraid of death. But Celaena just laughed, and Kory found herself easing her nerves and laughing a bit, too. It was rare for her to come across a happy customer.
"Vixen. I like that'n." She commented. It was catchy. Kory continued on in a joking fashion. "So...do I still get the cash?"

"Don't know why but it seems to suit you Ms. Kory," Celaena hummed. She gave the daughter of Dionysus a look that said, Really? You're kidding right?
"You seem to have plenty 'nough drachmas in that fancy little pouch of yours. Don't see why you would need some of mine." She shrugged with a smirk. She handed Kory back her rigged deck and rolled around in the sand like a chinchilla. Chinchillas couldn't bathe in water since their fur was too thick so they rolled around in the sand or dirt to get a sandbath or something. She was doing the same except she was just getting dirtier. She shook the sand out of her hair carefully so it didn't hit the other girl in the face and wiped some of it off her arms.

Kory tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and huffed. Enough drachmas? Hardly! Today was a slow day, and a lady needed to make some cash to pay back a few people! Regardless, she said nothing as she pocketed the deck of cards again. She was just about to comment on the majority of the coins in her pouch were chocolates wrapped in foil when Celaena started to roll around in the sand. Kory instead watched her in confusion, not sure if she was summoning Cthulu the Dark One or something of the sort. She soon was done with her ceremony and Kory took this time to clear some things up.
"So, Celaena," She began casually, pushing herself up and folding her legs beneath her once again. "Let's say nothin' 'bout this...attempt to nobody. 'S that alright wit' you?"

"I can keep a secret but what's in it for me?" Celaena smirked.
She also couldn't help but wonder why Kory even had to con people out of her money but then again everyone had their reasons. She could actually see herself doing the same if her mom's shop hadn't become a sudden hit. She could actually see herself doing worse. Celaena sat herself up on the sand and straightened herself, her fingers sliding against the sand and the tips tingling to detect any type of metal in her 50 foot perimeter. She could feel her coins rattle slightly and random pieces of metal in the sand but she didn't feel anything but a slight twinge come from when she moved her hand a few inches away from the other girl's pouch. It didn't set off a lot of touch to her fingers than a good sack of drachs should've. She found it quite odd.
