Tiberia arrived on the Field of Mars, dressed in full armor: imperial gold breastplate, leg and arm greaves, helmet embossed with designs of crossed swords and skulls. Underneath she wore her purple Camp Jupiter shirt, a pair of urban camouflage trousers and combat boots with crampons -- perfect for hiking up steep paths or walking on people's faces. Her black curls were swept together into tight ponytail at the base of her neck, the streaks tucked in under her helmet so none flew around or got into her face. Long hair was a big liability in combat, as she had learned throughout the years.
Carrying shield and pilum, she came to a halt in the middle of the field. To her right, New Rome gleamed in the sunlight. White buildings, gardens bursting with flowers, flawless marble...Her home. She could make out the Senate(it was almost repaired now) and the columns of the Forum amidst the sea of red roofs and golden domes. The aqueduct stretched away from it into the Berkeley hills, white like new snow. To her left, she had the Little Tiber and behind her, the military camp. Unicorns grazed in a meadow, giant eagles flew in the sky.
She had always loved the Field of Mars, it breathed battles and victories, with its trenches and holes in the ground a bit everywhere. She loved to play war games here -- tonight they had death ball, which would make for a big stoke of adrenaline. Oh yeah, and a number of burns and bruises. Tiberia couldn't wait.

The Field of Mars represented the place where Romulus Emanuel Mercury truly excelled, the Field of Battle. War. It was his heritage to excel in it, son of a War God and great-grandson of Mars himself. There was no combination of everything more perfectly Roman than the sixteen year old Opito of the 1st Cohort of the 12th Legion. He was the definition of a Roman soldier, one of the greatest tacticians the Legion had seen in quite some time, a master fighter, and an all-around good hearted person. That of course was his ego talking but when you performed that well and stood up and sometimes even surpassed the rumors it simply became the truth.

Walking across the field in his armor which consisted of Imperial Gold breastplate, leg and arm greaves, and helmet all painted slightly red in honor of his father. That and he liked the color scheme, he wouldn’t admit it to anyone not even Tiberia but he thought it made him look like that one super hero she liked Iron something. He needed no symbols on the armor as his Verutum represented him more than enough. Said short spear was currently strapped across his back with his Gladius sheathed and a dagger strapped to his heel. Some thought it odd but Romulus chose not to fight with a shield and a pilum as most Legionnaires did, which his commanding officer, mother, and even Tiberia had grilled him about. Instead choosing the older ‘less practical’ style. The Verutum was a less common spear as it was used for closer combat and not to be thrown like the longer version of the Pilum, not that it couldn’t be mind you.

It wasn’t long before he spotted the reason he was here. She too was armed to the teeth and looked ready to take down any monster that dared cross her, which coincidentally was why they were both there. Some days they would come here to train against each other but today was not one of those days as they had both been allowed to train against the Camp’s monsters. “Salve.” He said when he was within ear shot of his friend. Removing his Verutum from its ‘holster’ on his back and placing the blunt end on the ground he held his hand out to her to grasp and shake. “Quid agis? Are you ready?” He knew the second question was dumb, as obviously she was, but formalities were formalities. His mother grilled that into his head as a child. In her own words her son would not turn out to be a rude robot.

"Salve!" she replied with a grin, shaking his hand with her firm grip. She wore fingerless black Lycra gloves for fighting to keep a better grasp on her weapons. "Bene, gratias. And yes, I'm more than ready," she told him, her lips curling back into her signature wolf-like grin.

They made their way towards yesterday's fort, which wasn't taken down yet, and Tiberia wondered which monsters they'd send back to Tartarus today. A couple of dracaenae? Gryphi? Mantichorae? Whichever, she was ready to shed their blood.

Of course she was ready, she was always ready. Romulus followed her to the fort and was readying himself for battle both mentally and physically. Breathing in and out steadily preparing for the fight that was sure to come. When they made it to the fort he looked out over the field and chuckled "Looks like it's going to be a pair of dracaenae today, shouldn't be a problem." Spinning his shield he positioned it in both his hands ready for the onslaught that was sure to come. For them at least, he knew that he and Tiberia would have no problem taking down anything the monsters down. "Here they come. Be ready." He shifted into an offensive stance spear head pointed outwards.

"How long are we going to debate about my readiness?" Tiberia asked him with half a grin, looking straight ahead.

She brought her shield in front of her and lowered her pilum horizontally, though keeping the visor of her helmet up. There was no sand to get into her eyes here. The dracaenae glided on the grass with their snake legs, the green and blue scales gleaming in the sunlight. They were hissing and baring their fangs, their eyes glowing green like venom.

“As long as it takes.” His spoke out his last joking words as they slithered/ran forwards and he shifted into soldier mode. His mind racing with possibilities, tactics, and strategies. He knew this field as if it was the back of his hand and he had faced dracaenae before and the fact that there was only two of them at this point and time meant it was going to be way too easy. One for him and one for Tiberia “Sinistra.” He called out to her slipping into Latin as he himself faced up against the monster on the right, the one that just so happened to be carrying a spear as well. Readying his own he stabbed forward with the spear attempting to get a clean heart shot off nice and quick. He knew it wasn’t going to work but it never hurt to try and end things quickly.

Tiberia’s dracaenae rushed forward at the descendant of Neptune and hissed as she closed the distance. When she was within striking distance she slashed out at the demi-god’s unprotected face, attempting to get in close so the spear wouldn’t harm her.

Tiberia didn't let the she-monster the time to rip her face off. Blocking her arm with a hit of her shield, she drove her pilum towards her throat. But the dracaena spat a mouthful of corrosive venom at it, making the wood of the shaft literally melt. Tiberia hissed, dropped the weapon and drew her gladius, aiming hits with the blade, the pommel and her shield. Both dracaenae had armors, but she had fought so many in her life, not to mention the battle of Mount Othrys, the battle against Polybotes and the battle of Half-Blood hill, that she perfectly knew the flaws and liabilities in their breastplates.

The quick clean stab didn’t work, the monster was able to slither past the stab and jab her own spear at Romulus. Who was able to quickly move his body in such a way that he was able to grip his spear with two hands get below the dracaenae’s spear and push up. As the spear was up in the air he turned his body so that he was diagonal and slammed the Verutum down into the dracaenae’s face. She slithered backwards a bit but it gave Romulus the perfect opportunity to straighten himself out and level his Verutum once more jabbing it forward, spear head out, and into the thing’s scaly side. It went in through the armor and he could feel it stab into flesh. Ripping it out the Dracaenae hissed and spit out venom in retaliation which Romulus deflected by raising his arm over his face. This was far from over.

Tiberia pushed the dracaena back with a hit of her shield and drove the golden blade of her gladius in the tiny interstice where her breastplate connected with her shoulder plate. She was angry the she-monster had broken her beautiful pilum, she hated it when her weapons got destroyed like that. Her gladius was slippery with green monster blood as she pulled it out, the edge grating against the monster's collarbone. The dracaena lashed out with her claws, baring her curved fangs -- Tiberia leaned back but not enough; the claws caught her on her forearm, scratching over her shoulder plates and chin. Warm blood seeped out of the cuts; the wound were superficial and the sting only made Tiberia angrier as she aimed slashes and punches with her gladius.

Of course saying it wasn't even close to being over was quite the understatement. The dracaenae used the opportunity it had and jammed it's spear into Romulus' leg only for him to kick forward and the spear to graze by his leg greaves. Pushing it to the side he drove his own Verutum forward and watched as it lodged into the breastplate of the dracaenae. It cackled thinking Romulus had gotten the thing stuck and of course it attempted to back up out of his reach but Romulus punched the thing in the face, unsheathed his Gladius and stabbed it in the neck as it was holding his face. "veni vidi vici " Pushing the Gladius in deeper until it was sticking out the other end and he was looking the creature in the eyes. He moved the Gladius right and left then ripped it out and elbowed the head off.

The dracaena defended herself with her claws and knives, hissing and spitting venom but Tiberia wasn't intimidated. She had sent dozens of those into the magma of Tartarus, this one would follow her sisters into the Pit. Ducking away under a slash, she picked up a long piece of her broken pilum with her shield hand and used it to hit the dracaena in the side of her Scythian armor as she straightened back up. The venom was still melting the wood and clung to the leather as she tossed the stick away, breaking into tactical moves to make her lower her guard just enough for the leather to melt -- it wouldn't be corrosive to her scales, but the leather would be seriously damaged in moments. She side-stepped, dodged and parried the attacks in metallic clanks, until the blueish scales appeared underneath the strongly reinforced leather. Tiberia didn't lose a second. Slashing the she-monster's wrist open, she horizontally sliced at the exposed waist hard enough to rip through her scales, flesh and stomach tissues until her razor-sharp gladius got abruptly stopped by the spine. The fight was pretty much over, but Tiberia pulled her sword out with a repelling suction noise and kicked the dracaena in the stomach with her crampon-set combat boots, having her fall over with a cry of agonized pain. Her blood was seeping out onto the grass and earth as she shouted, holding her side. Picking up the other part of her pilum which was half covered in the venom, Tiberia stood over the she-monster for a second, then suddenly brought down the imperial gold spear head between her eyes as hard as she could, crunching through the bone and digging into the brain. The right snake leg twitched one last time and she exploded the next moment in a column of flames, leaving a sprinkle of monster dust behind.
Tiberia waved the sparks away and turned to Romulus, her golden gladius covered in viscous green blood and pieces of flesh. "Veni, vidi, vici, huh?" she grinned.

"Yes. I came, I saw, I conquered. It's Julius Caesar which is simple Roman. I expect you would know this Tiberia." Romulus said putting his his Gladius into the ground to clean out any dracaenae blood off of it. Pulling it out soon after and cleaning the dirt off with a rag before sheathing it. When that was done he picked up his Verutum and placed it back on his back. The first wave of monsters was over, it was way too easy and he had expected the beast keeper to send something stronger at them perhaps maybe the second wave would be better. "Let's hope the second wave is more interesting. I need a good workout for the next War Games." He chuckled tossing the Veretum to Tiberia as she no longer had her own spear and he could fight well enough with his Gladius.

"Yeah I know, I'm so uncultured," Tiberia replied to Romulus' sarcasm. Veni, vidi, vici was like, the first Latin saying she had learned when she was three, just like aut vincere aut mori, si vis pacem para bellum, and all these other Latin proverbs that kind of everybody knew -- not like they were also plastered across Camp Jupiter anyway.

"What? No, keep your spear," she said, tossing the verutum back. "I can handle myself with my gladius and pugio, gratias."

In this kind of situation, she rarely accepted help, unless it was absolutely necessary. She glanced down at the poor remnants of her pilum: the only thing left from the inscription was CHT II, and even that was starting to melt away.

The second wave came a minute later, just when Tibia had finished cleaning her gladius with handfuls of grass. "Now that looks more interesting," she grinned, gazing at the mantichorae.

Romulus could only shrug as he caught hold of his Verutum, replacing his Gladius with it as said sword went back into its sheath. Closing his eyes he breathed in than back out before opening his eyes and letting the next monster they were up against sink in. It was a mantichorae. A beast with the body of a lion, the face of a man, and a spike-tipped arrow-shooting tail, not something to be trifled with but he was sure he and Tiberia could handle it; if of course they worked together like the well-oiled machine they always were. “This will be more of a challenge. You take point sense you have the shield, Give me a couple of seconds before you charge in though.” He said backing off a bit and readying his spear as he closed his eyes once more.

“I do hope you remember plan Minotaur Berserker.” It wasn’t what he had wanted to call it but after using it twice in the War Games the name the other Cohorts had called it kind of stuck. In a sense Romulus changed the mist so that everyone saw one of the soldiers as the Minotaur, and as it was common knowledge that he did this now it didn’t work anymore and he had to adept to make new tactics. However, as the Mantichorae had obviously never seen it before he figured it was worth a shot. The shock factor alone could work to their advantage, give Tiberia the chance to raise her shield to block any sudden arrows shot from the tail and slice it off.

As the thing came within full sight Romulus went to work, with a wave of his hand he concentrated on the Minotaur. He concentrated on Tiberia becoming the Minotaur and the Mantichorae seeing her as thus, the beast charging forwards, ax raised high into the air. Here the monster had expected to be fighting against some legionnaires, a chance to whack off a few before moving on to his next victims and instead he was up against the Minotaur. Romulus also focused on the things fear, he’d need that fear and shock factor if this plan was going to work at all.
