    The Bestiary

Aegipan: Monster with a fish's tail and a goat's head.

    Aerico: Disease demon.

Agrios: Son of Polyphonte, a Hunter of Artemis, and a bear. He is the brother of Orios, and is half-man, half-bear.

Antaeus: Son of Poseidon and Gaea, he is invincible when touching the ground and has the decorative habit of building a temple to his father with the skulls of his fallen victims.

Artmasp or Arimaspi: One-eyed riders, not much is known about them except that they live in Hyperborea and tried to get the griffin's gold.

Basilisk: A caterpillar-like snake whose acid is extremely dangerous. It's afraid of weasels, though, so always have one in your pockets when leaving your home.

Cacus: This half-man, half-satyr was the son of Hephaestus, who was able to spit torrents of flames and smoke. In the mythology, he lived in a cave, in front of which he had suspended heads of his victims.

Calydonian Boar: Sent by Artemis to the King Oeneus because he had forgotten to sacrifice to her, the Boar would destroy all the crops; it was killed by Atalanta and Meleager.

Campe: If you read Battle of The Labyrinth, there's not much I could tell you about her, I'm afraid. She was the guardian of Tartarus under Cronus. She had the  bust of a woman, the body of a dragon, snakes around her legs and on her head, animal heads coming out from her waist and (something Riordan didn't mention in the book) a scorpion wandering about on her shoulders.

Carnivorous Centaurs: They have the lower body of a palomino horse, possess horns and are tattooed all over.

Carnivorous Sheep: You met those funny things at Polyphemus's. They were guarding the Golden Fleece.

Charybdis: Well, you know that one.

Chimera: Body of a lion, head of a goat, snake's body as a tail, fire-spitting, this monster was defeated by Bellerophon in the myths, and killed by Percy Jackson at the Saint Louis arch.

Chrysaor: Son of Medusa, he is known for fighting with a golden sword and being an excellent swordsman.

Ceto: Ceto was the sea monster to whom Andromeda had to be sacrificed; Perseus killed it.

Circe: Daughter of Hecate, she is very famous for her treatment of men. She lives on the island Aeaea, in the Sea of Monsters.

Colchis Bull: They appear in the beginning of Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. You know, those metallic bulls who spit fire.

Cretan Bull: Wild bull sent by Poseidon against Minos who defied him. He is the father of the Minotaur.

Crommyonian Sow: This monster came during the battle at Central Park. Unlike Percy thought, she isn't the girlfriend of the Erymanthian Boar, but its mother.

Cyclops: One-eyed giants, famous for their love of demigod flesh, though not all are that way (Telemos, Tyson,...)

Cycnos: Son of Ares, this warrior was known for robbing the pilgrims who were going to Delphi. He was killed by Heracles.

Cynokephalos: Man with the head of a dog. Generally in packs.

Delphyne: Delphyne was a creature half-woman, half-dragon who had to guard Zeus's sinews. She was slain by Apollo.

Diomedes: Son of Ares and Cyrene, this savage king was mostly known because of his mares, whom he fed human flesh. Percy met these mares at Geryon's ranch, in the fourth book (except that they are said to be four in the legends, and in the book, it seems there are quite many of them).

Dragon: Sometimes multiple-headed, sometimes winged, but always giant creatures with titanium-hard scales.

Drakon: Giant snakes who spit acid.

Echidna: Wife of Typhoon, she's the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto (met those in Mark of Athena), she has the bust and belly of a beautiful woman, but her legs are a unique snake's tail. She's the mother to many monsters.

Empousa: Servant of Hecate, she can take the form of a beautiful young woman, but in fact has flames instead of hair, red eyes, fangs, chalky white skin and mismatched legs: one looks human but is out bronze, the other one is a donkey's leg. You met Kelli and Tammi, didn't you?

Ephialtes: Ephialtes are the male counterparts of empousae.

Erymanthian Boar: A wild boar killed by Heracles.

Ethon: The eagle, sent by Zeus, who ate Prometheus's liver. Also called the Caucasian eagle.

Feather-shooting Birds: Big like ravens, metallic feathers which they can shoot like arrows, these creatures always attack in a swarm.

Geryon: Triple-bodied son of Chrysaor, Geryon owns a ranch in Texas - well, owned. Now he has to get back from Tartarus, and when he does, I think Eurytion will have some things to tell him.

Gorgons: Medusa, Euryale and Stheno; were all killed by Percy so you probably won't meet them soon.

Griffins/Gryphons: Griffins are monsters with the head and wings of an eagle but the rest of their body is the one of a lion. Their worst enemies are the horses.

Harpyes: Originally, they are three: Ocypete, Podarge and Aello (Aello is Ella, the red-haired harpy they encounter in Son Of Neptune). But it seems there are many more now. They have the head of a woman and the body of a bird. They aren't considered intelligent, otherwise they wouldn't spend their time cleaning dishes at Camp.

Hellhounds: Don't pretend, you know those guys.

    Hyperborean Cyclopes: Hardcore cyclopes.

Hyperborean giants: Usually pacific, some of those guys swore allegiance to Cronus during the Second Titanomachia.

Karpoi: Literally meaning 'fruits' in Ancient Greek, the karpoi (singular: karpos) are the spirits of cereals. Some are evil.

Ker: Spirits of death, often evil, dark blue in color.

Ladon: Ladon is the guardian of the Garden of Hesperids. Being a dragon, he has many heads, and is charged to watch the golden apples Zeus gave Hera as a wedding gift.

Laistrygonian giants: Very tall (around eight feet), these giants have vivid red skin covered by tattoos and love eating demigods.

Lamia (Sybaris): She was one of Zeus multiple lovers, but jealous Hera drove her mad by killing her children and forcing her eyelids to stay open, giving her no rest. Lamia turned into a monster with the bust of a woman and a snake body instead of legs.

Lamiae: Like the original lamia, they possess a single snake body instead of legs. They prefer to attack children.

Lemures: Roman monster only. They were the spirits of the dead, but not like the Lares. Lemuri are evil spirits.

Lernean Hydra: This creature has multiple heads, and one is immortal. When you cut off one head, two more come out, unless you burn the stump. All heads breathe poison, so don't come to near, plus it spits acid.

Lycanthrope: Literally, 'wolfman' or 'werewolf'. They are the followers of Lycaon, their king, and can be wounded only by silver.

    Lycaon: Chief of the lycanthropes.

Incubus: Roman counterpart of an ephialtes.

Manticore: Human face, lion's body and scorpion's tail, don't mess with these guys. You might recognize them because of their mismatched eyes (don't run off killing everybody with mismatched eyes though).

Medea: Corynthian princess, she's an extremely powerful magician, known for her potions, enchantments and charmspeak. And yeah, the golden dragons (Colchis dragons).

Minotaur: Son of Pasiphae and the Cretan Bull, the Minotaur has a particular taste for human and demigod flesh.

Mormolyce: Female demon with donkey legs.

Myrmex (plural: Myrmekes): Giant ants. One of them appears in Son of Neptune, when they are at the Amazon's.

Nemean Lion: Probably among the most famous monsters of greek mythology, this lion had iron-hard fur, but was choked by Heracles and later by Percy Jackson.

Nessos: He was the centaur who tried to abduct Deianira, and who finally gave her the tunic soaked with his own blood that provoked Hercules's death.

    Ogygos: Chaos demon.

    Ophion: Sort of masculine Echidna.

Orios: Brother of Agrios, same parentage, same physical appearance.

Pit Scorpion: This scorpion comes directly out of the Underworld, it's poison is deadly unless quickly treated and the beast can jump up to fifteen feet high.

Pyreneus: One of the legendary Thracians of Daulis; he imprisoned the Muses, who managed to escape using their wings. He fell from his palace's roof.

Python: Python was a monstrous snake who terrified the people of Delphi, until Apollo came around and killed it with his arrows.

Scylla: You know her too. Multiple heads, turned into a monster by Circe and likes eating boatsmen.

Scythian Dracanae: Women's bust and two snake tails instead of legs.

Sea Serpent: They look like drakons but can't spit poison. And yeah, they live underwater.

Skolopendra: Half-shrimp, half-crayfish monster. It lives underwater.

Sirens: Half-bird, half-woman, these creatures have an enchanting way of singing, which forces people to go to them.... and finish as their dinner.

Spartos (plural: Spartoi): Soldiers born from a dragon tooth, real killing machines. They are called Spartus in latin (plural: Sparti).

Sphinx: The Sphinx is a creature with the bust of a woman and the body of a lion who tells riddles and eats those who can't answer them.

Strix (Plural: Striges): Striges are winged female demons with sharp claws.

Stymphalean Birds: Carnivore birds raised by Ares, they have iron beak and claws, and their feathers are razor-sharp. They can be defeated by putting on some horrible music - ask Chiron.

Succube: Roman counterpart of an empousa.

Sybaris (≠Lamia): Not much is known about this monster except that it is a dragon who lived near Delphi and was killed by Eurybatos in order to save a person from sacrifice.

Talos: Automaton created by Hephaestus, one of his earlier prototypes killed Bianca Di Angelo. The real automaton, though, is invincible safe for a place at his ankle, where a vein irrigates him with ichor. Cut the vein and he's dead.

    Telekhines: Half-dog, half-seal sea demons.

Teumessian fox: This fox has the reputation of being impossible to catch. He terrified the people of Thebes until somebody got the idea of getting Laelaps, a magical dog who could catch everything. In the end, since they were a contradiction, Zeus turned them both into stone.

Theban dragon: A giant snake guarding Ares's spring, whom Cadmos killed.

Ventus also called Anemoi Thuellai: Evil wind spirits; they take human or horse form depending on their chaos level.
