Robin sauntered into the Game Room absent mindedly, scanning the surroundings for something to do. He sat down at a nearby Chessboard and waited for something to happen.

Maeve walked into the room and sat on a couch in the corner near the chess area. She took out her dagger and polishing cloth and began cleaning the Stygian Iron.

Robin noticed the new girl out of the corner of his eye, and a smirk was crossed across his face.

"Hey there, young lady. Would you like to play a game?" he asked.

Maeve looked up at the white-haired boy. He had a self-righteous look about him that bothered her and she didn't appreciate the way he addressed her at all. Maeve figured she could wipe the floor with him at whatever game he was talking about. She smiled sweetly.
    "Sure."
    This should be fun.

Robin grinned, his eyes briefly flashing gold and took the chessboard on his table and threw all the pieces aside, before reaching into his hip pack and taking out his own, highly ornate wooden chess pieces and setting up the board, but leaving one black pawn and white pawn in his hand. He shuffled the two pieces between his hands and presented both his hands, the white piece in one and the black piece in the other. he offered his hands to Maeve and declared.

"The game is Chess, plain and simple, although I think this game will be somewhat unlike other games youve played... But first, pick a hand. The colour of the piece you pick will determine which side you will be playing as."

Maeve smirked. The boy was putting on quite the show. His flourishes and declarations were dramatic and wholly unecessary. Maeve decided to humor him, though. She pointed to his left and. "I assume this game will have stakes?" she said, barely serious.

Meanwhile, Gwen walked in, fiddling with her camera.

    Robin grinned,

"Naturally. You'll figure out as we go along." He opened his hand to reveal the White Pawn.

"Well done! You chose the white pawn, now you are the one to go first." Robin placed the two pawns back in place and flipped the board around to present the white side to Maeve. Then Robin noticed the newcomer, and grinned happily.

"Oh? And audience! Brilliant! Please feel free to watch, but please, do not interfere."

Maeve raised and eyebrow and looked at the boy. This was getting ridiculous. He, however, seemed earnest, or as earnest as someone with that kind of smirk could be. With barely a fleeting glance towards the girl who walked in, she took the pawn and moved it forward one space.
"I didn't catch your name." She said.

Gwen looked up briefly and gave the white-haired freak a disgusted glance. He sounded pompous as hell, and she wanted none of it.

"The name is Robin Goodfellow," he grinned, moving forward his own pawn in an identical move. He noticed the other girl in the corner of his eye looking distainfully at him, causing him to frown in concern.

"Is there something the matter?" he asked.

Gwen frowned. "Nothing at all." She said in dark tones, not insinuating anything; that was just the way she talked. Gwen looked daggers at the boy, apparently called Robin. Her body language was clearly broadcasting "piss off", she hoped he got the message.

    Robin shrugged.

"Nevermind then," he muttered. He cast his gaze back to Maeve.

    "Your move," he uttered.

Maeve gave a sharp burst of laughter. "Is this how we're going to play?" She moved her pawn forward and took his piece, leaving her pawn open for capture.

Robin smirked as his piece was taken, his first stage of the plan had been implemented. He pushed forwards another pawn into the line of fire of his opponents.

Maeve frowned, then moved her pawn to back up the first one she moved. Maeve would never admit it, but she was only barely familiar with the rules of chess. She was starting to doubt she could make it through the game with her limited knowledge.
"I can fix that." said a cool, female voice in her head.
    Maeve twitched.

It wasnt much of a sign, but Robin saw the twitch. Instantly his head exploded with psychoanalytical gibberish and tactical procedures to marry the information. It may not be much, but the slightest flatering of poker faces could often give the game away. It was time for a big move...

"Pawn forward," he uttered, moving a second pawn to back up its team mate who were threatening Maeve's own little white soldier.

Maeve moved a knight forward, a rash move, but she had a plan. She lifted her hand to scratch her face.
"Bad move. Only an amateur would move that there."
"Shut up" Maeve muttered imperceptibly into her hand.
    "Let me help."
Maeve pushed her hair over her shoulder, deliberatly ignoring the voice.

Robin grinned, something was clearly messing with her judgement. He took his Bishop and slid it along the flank of the entire board, leaving it to rest threatening her King. The piece would clearly be taken, but if Robin had played his cards right, she would take his piece with her Queen, leaving her entire left flank vulnerable for attack.

    "Something the matter?" Robin asked.

Maeve gave Robin a sweet smile laced with vitriol.
    "I'm just fine."
Maeve looked down at the board. This was too simple. She could easily take Robin's bishop with her queen, but why would Robin make such a move in the first place? Maeve pondered for a moment. To her untrained eye, it didn't look like a trap. Maybe he was just incredibly bad at chess. She reached for her queen.
    "It's a trap. Idiot."
Maeve's placid expression dropped. She was sick to death of that voice. Rashly, she grabbed her queen and took the bishop.

Robin whistled a little merry tune as he moved in his opposing Bishop from the other side of the board over to where her Queen lay and knocked it from its place, capturing her piece. He smirked and looked up at Maeve.

    "Back to you."

Maeve wanted wipe that smirk off of his face, preferably with acid, but she couldn't afford to lose it. She looked back at him, face blank as she enacted her plan from earlier. Taking her bishop, she made her way over to his queen. She was a move away from taking it and there was no way he could stop her.
Unfortunately, she had neglected to notice a small path leading directly to her king.  It was hard to spot, but one of Robin's knights could get right through it.

Robin sighed contentedly as he moved his Knight into its position, checking Maeve's King for what seemed like a Mate.

"I think thats game," he uttered with a sly smile.

Maeve stared at the chessboard and frowned. That was an unbelievably easy victory for him.
"You stupid, stupid, girl. You should have seen that coming."
    Maeve twitched.
"He beat you in five moves. You even had the advantage of going first!"
    "Shut up." Maeve whispered.
"Maybe if you weren't so impatient, you'd be winning."
Her frustration was growing. She needed to take it out on something. Maeve looked across the table at Robin. In a swift move, she flipped the chessboard over and at his face.

Robin instinctively dodged the chess board and the majority of the incoming chess pieces. When one lives a life of swindling others out of their money, one tends to find items being regularily thrown at their face. His eyes turned angry and his face contorted from a sly grin into a menacing stare.

"You really shouldnt have done that," he spoke, his every word haunted with some unseen dread.

"Because this game isnt a normal game, you might realise, but a Shadow Game. Look around you." Robin cast his own gaze around the room. The very air was rippling with some invisible force and the area around the chessboard and the two competitors was hazy with a green, purple and gold tinted light.
