The Sacred Field Empty The Sacred Field

Post by Green 12/17/2014, 4:39 pm

Derek sat in the clearing where the forest ended and where the field began. The sun was slowly setting in the west and a gentle breeze blew through the field. The tall stocks blowing like a sea of gold. Derek took in a deep breath and looked up into the tree. Sighing, Derek looked back over the field and smiled. There was something about being around an open space that consisted of wheat and grains that made the son of Demeter feel save and warm, even though the temperature was about fifty-eight degrees outside. He reached inside his satchel and pulled out some cards. Mother day cards, seventeen of them to be exact. Derek had planned to just dig a hole and place them in it so that maybe, just maybe his mother might read them.

The wheat undulated in the sunlight, golden highlights dancing on the ripe crops. The air was full of the earth's fresh smell. Everything looked normal until a sudden wind blow hit the fields, sending wheat blades and leaves flying around in spirals then settled down slowly in the form of a young woman in her late thirties, with warm brown eyes full of power. Her wavy blonde hair was braided over her shoulder with a poppy flower and dried grass blades, the curls blowing softly in the wind. Her face was kind but regal and beautiful, and despite her comfortable white blouse and green pants, she carried a curved sword at her side.

She walked up towards her son; she didn't have much time and Zeus had granted her this one talk with her child.

"Hello Derek," she smiled, her voice as warm as her eyes.

Derek frowned a bit and looked up to see a beautiful, fair skin woman standing before him. "Uhm, hey." It was just something about this woman who had suddenly appeared. Something comforting. He slowly stood up, using the tree behind him to prop himself up as his didn't leave her face. "Are you a field nymph or something?" He asked respectfully just in case she was something much more. Derek plopped his bound stack of Mother's Day cards to the side and wiped his hands on his pants. He took a small step closer to her before pausing.

The goddess let out a soft laugh, like a low humming. As she walked forward, the wheat blades and poppy flowers seemingly leaned to her as if she were a magnet.

"No, dear. I'm your mother, Demeter."

Derek's heart skipped a beat and stared blankly at Demeter. "M-mom?" He said in a whisper and quickly kneeled before her, showing her respect. "I-I can't believe you're really here.." Derek glanced up at her, then back down at the ground. Facts about who his mother was started to run through is head. The very fact that she is the reason of the changing of seasons made his heart beat faster.

"Oh, please stand up dear," Demeter said with a smile. "Look at you! You look fit and healthy, I bet you eat a lot of bio cereals."

She snapped her fingers and the wheat bent into a throne-like seat on which she sat, creating a kind of armchair for Derek.

"It's good to finally talk to you. I've been wanting to for aeons, but my brother Zeus restricts our contact with our children to the absolute minimum. I have maybe five minutes with you now."

Derek quickly stood up and looked down at his body, then back at his mother. "Yes ma'am. If it's not grown organically, then I won't eat it." He commented and looked behind him to pick up the bundle of letters. Derek slowly walked toward her and sat down.

He bit his lip nervously, trying to figure out what to say to her. Derek took in a deep breath and handed her the letters. "These are for you..." He said in a whisper.

"That's my boy," Demeter warmly replied. "Also, call me Mom. I feel like an old lady when you call me ma'am."

Well -- she was an old lady, right? She just didn't look like one.
Then he handed her the letters and Demeter beamed. "Darling! Those are so sweet! Thank you!"

Derek nodded and smiled up at her. "Of course, anything you wish." He sat up straight and smiled. "I had planned to bury them in the field, hoping that you might be able to find them..." Derek added, leaning over a bit on the arm rest that connected the two seats.

"May I ask you a question? How did a Greek goddess such as yourself meet my dad all the way in South Africa?" Derek questioned.

"Oh, Franklin is an amazing man," she said, snapping her fingers. A strong gust of wind took the letters from her hand and blew them upwards along with wheat blades and leaves, slowly disappearing into the sky. "Always cooking bio, and with a fantastic outlook on life. Oh, I loved him very much. See, it doesn't matter where he lives; sometimes mortals simply get me to be attentive with small things like that. And when I got to know him better, ohhh... I was head over heels with him."

Derek watched as the letters were swelter away by the cooling breeze. "Yeah, he's a pretty good father...and farmer if I might add." He smiled some and took in a deep breath, smelling baked bread and spices. "Um, so I have another question momma, is it possible for children, when they die, be able to work for their parents? Like ever since I've been at camp, I've imagined myself working in your sacred temple as a servant."

"A servant? Dear, I'd hardly do that to you. You can accompany me and do things for me but you're my son, not my butler." She beaned warmly at him, then smiled sadly. "Immortality is a prize Zeus gives only reluctantly. And it'll be even more reluctant now that Percy Jackson turned it down. If you do great deeds, incredible heroic achievements.... Perhaps. But remember, whatever you do, I will always be proud of you."

"Oh, okay..." Derek looked down at the ground, then back up at his mother. "Then I'll make it my life's mission, mom." He fought back a tear and stood up from his throne. "I pledge my life to you, Demeter, the good mother." He announced and grew a some flowers around her, daisies. "The fairest of the orginal gods. "

Demeter wiped her eyes with a green handkerchief. "Oh dear you are so sweet."

The goddess looked at him with her glowing brown eyes, the daisies he had made grow shining pearly white at her feet. Far away, thunder rumbled.

"Zeus calls me back," she sadly said, "but I'll see you again soon enough. Take care of yourself, Derek, and don't forget I always watch over you even if it doesn't seem like it." She stood up and wrapped him in a hug.

"Alright, then mom." He smiled and hugged her back, embracement from his mother meant the world to him. "I'll see you on Olympus? If you still have time?"Derek asked, whispering in the goddess's ear.

    "Of course I'll have time."

She smiled and let go of him. "I listen to every one of my children's prayers. If I don't reply in your thoughts, look for signs around you."

With that, she fell apart into wheat blades and disappeared into the sky, leaving behind nothing but an earthy, fruity aroma.

Derek smiled and nodded once. "I will, momma." He said with a warm smile as he watched her ascend back to Olympus. The son of Demeter grabbed his satchel and headed back toward the common area.
