Pierre hadn't brought Gus with him when he went out walking in the forest. He needed a bit of calm and quiet to clear his head, which seemed to constantly ache with the strain of dealing with what should not be. Greek gods and goddesses, demigods, satyrs, giant badgers. And worse, all violent and trying to teach him to be violent.

Despite warnings, Pierre was not armed except with a small knife he used as a tool more than anything else. It wasn't even as big as his hand and wouldn't do any good in a fight, not that he would hurt anyone. The large teen sighed as he walked through the woods, regretting that he was not back in France. He feared, and almost loathed, his grandmother and her hurled insults, but it seemed a far better alternative than being pressured into fighting and killing monsters just because some gods wanted you to.

"Utter nonsense." He said to himself, shaking his head. "Or a really vivid hallucination."

For the past 4 or so months, Ryan had taken up residence in the interesting death trap known as Camp Half-Blood. And honestly, it was starting to feel like a home to him. To think that only a relatively short time ago, he was wandering the camp looking for a place to get a damn pillow and now he's training just about everyday. For someone who was thrown into the demigod life as late as he was, he was doing quite well for himself.

    ~

Back home in Troy, MI, there wasn't much in the way of forests. Maybe a pocket of trees here and there, but nothing too undeveloped that you would be able to stand back and call a forest. But it wasn't like he hadn't been in any; there were a few in the surrounding towns as well as the entire U.P. from the time he went hunting, and those did their best to make it feel somewhat like life back in the mitten. Despite the warnings that monsters were present in these woods, Ryan only ventured out with the clothes on his back (consisting of a dark brown Carhartt jacket, a pair of regular cut jeans, and running shoes) and his insurance policy, AKA his sword, slung over his back.

He wasn't expecting a lot of people to be in the woods at this time, but he wasn't surprised that ten or so minutes into the trek, he spotted another, larger camper just...sitting. Just sitting there, lacking a weapon. As crazy as that sounded, it should come to no surprise that Ryan felt the need to check out the odd guy. In the hope of getting his attention, Ryan called out "Yo! Big guy!", believing that that would secure the kid's attention.

'Big Guy'. Why did people always call him 'Big Guy'? Pierre frowned. "I am not 'B-b-big Guy.'" He said as he turned to face the person who had spoken. Teenager, male, about twenty or so cm shorter than Pierre himself, with dark brown hair and a sword strapped to his back. Pierre was not familiar with this man. He smiled in a large and friendly manner, despite his earlier irritation at being called Big Guy. He liked meeting new people. "Hello. M-my name is P-Pierre." He stopped, then cursed mentally. He had been doing so well with the stutter. Now he couldn't hardly get past his name.

Ryan smiled, partially to look friendly and partially because he realized that half of CHB's population stuttered like the engine to some rusted-out 70s beater, which he found a little funny. But about mystery person, who unveiled his name to be Pierre and not André, which would've been fitting due to his gigantic size. And he sounded European. Western European. With that kind of name he was probably from France or Belgium. Either a crêpe or a waffle.

Regardless of origin, Ryan decided to release the same amount of information about himself to this Pierre guy. "Pierre, eh? Name's Ryan. Now out of curiosity, what makes a giant like yourself come all the way out here at a time like this?"

Pierre looked at Ryan, tilting his head a little. Giant. Big Guy. Obviously the other teen was self-conscious about his own height. Pierre slumped his shoulders some, hunkering down to look smaller. "I, uh, just wanted some....fresh air. C-Camp is too ...too... Eh, how do you say 'Je ne sais quoi'?" He asked, his words slow and a bit louder than normal speaking volume.

Slowly nodding, Ryan began to head over to Pierre. "You know, as much as I would love to speak French, I don't know that language. So could you please translate 'je ne sais quoi' pal?"

Well, Pierre didn't really expect Ryan to know French, but he thought that was a term used in English too as a loan phrase. "Ah, um, n-not sure how to explain. It is that feeling, th-that feeling where...I d-don't know. I don't know." He said, shrugging a little as he did.

"Well, n-no. I feel like this m-may still be a very vivid hallucination resulted from my TBI, b-but that usually happens after 4 or so years, n-not 9." Pierre said, shaking his head a little. "I c-cannot, uh, wrap my head around the idea."

"Ohhhh, I see now." Ryan chuckled at Pierre's hallucination theory. Ryan would be lying if he said he thought this was all real the first time he encountered the whole "gods and monsters". "No man, you're not going crazy. All of this is very tangible, as crazy as it may sound. And believe me, I'm 99% sure everyone here went through this at some point upon arrival."

Pierre grunted and frowned, crossing his arms. "I think I would p-prefer the hallucinations. Everyone keeps trying to get me to kill things. Or learn to kill things. I have no interest in b-being a murderer." He said, his words held a note of bitterness that most didn't hear. He just had no interest in learning to kill monsters.

Oh. So Pierre is one of those types. Well, time to talk some sense into him. "Ok... Well here's the thing, nobody wants you to be a murderer. We want you to be prepared to defend yourself against monsters. Think of it as an insurance policy: you have the policy in case anything happens, right? You don't want to use it, but when you have to, you'll be glad you had it."

Pierre looked at Ryan with a disapproving look. "And has anyone ever tried reasoning with the monsters? Working with them? Listening to their issues? I am not going to kill anything else. I didn't mean to kill the b-badger to in the first place." He said, feeling a pang of guilt over Gus's mom.

"Some f&$*ed up whack job of g-gods c-c-c-c-merde, made these monsters. I d-doubt the gods ever c-c-cared about their feelings." Pierre retorted, wishing he could speak clearer or more fluently. He frowned, "Some are p-probably, probably, probably...oh putain, some are probably...still upset. Others...are j-just wild animals." He explained, though he blushed heavily from the word finding issue. He had the word. He just couldn't spit it out.

It was at this point that Ryan had felt he had every right to slap this Franch f*** across the face for what he just said. But Ryan didn't express his anger towards Pierre's words that way, opting to continue using logic against the idealistic giant. "Regardless, those monsters want you and everyone here dead. And they will kill you even if it kills them. The only way a monster finds meaning in life is by standing over the mutalated corpse of a demigod."

Pierre grunted, not really believing the other teenager. He doubted any of these demigods had tried to do anything but kill the monsters to protect themselves. Treat an animal like a threat, it smells the fear and reacts accordingly. Gus hadn't tried to kill anybody, not even the dryads that the satyr had warned about. "Only way I'm killing anything is in order to p-protect ssomeone else, and even then I d-dont want to kill anything. Maiming is bad enough."

Hesitant and naive. The worst kind of demigods. "And you know what, I didn't want to carry my dying friend up Half-Blood Hill. I didn't want the last thing I told him to be based one spite and anger. And I certainly didn't want to be claimed moments after he passed away from blunt force trauma. But I didn't get to decide how my life played out, and neither will you once a monster crosses paths with you. It's either fight or die, kill or be killed. You can be all flower power and world peace today, but when the war comes, don't be surprised when you're the first casualty."

Giant b-badger! And I sorely regret killing her. I carried my satyr two hours to this c-camp, with him unable to stand. I am still a pacifist."

Pierre gave Ryan a dark glare, resisting that small natural urge to get physical. Violence did no good at all, and it only hurt people. He couldn't stand people hurting. At the same time, the comment did sting, the way it was suppose to. There was no shame in being nonviolent, and this aggressive teenager didn't seem to understand it took quite a bit of strength to be completely nonviolent. Still, there wasn't much he could reply with. Except sarcasm. "Meow."
