    Scorpion hunt! Empty Scorpion hunt!

Post by Morgan Landry 4/7/2016, 7:03 am

Artemis made her tent fold into her backpack with a snap of her fingers. All of the Hunters were prepared and ready, at least all those she had picked out for this specific hunt. She had chosen two of her veterans and two of her younger recruits, in order to have a balance of experience.

Greeting them with a smile, she looked at each of their faces: Mia, Asina, Aria, Emily. The small girl bound her dark red hair into a ponytail and looked at the sky. "Dawn is about to break," she said. "Let us begin." And she bounded off into the undergrowth, swiftly followed by the rest.

Asina took a deep breath as she followed behind her Lady Diana, putting sunglasses on in anticipation of the rising sun. She had her bow and her spear. Taking a deep breath, the earthy smell of the morning filling her nostrils, it was comforting.

The Hunt was something that Asina had done many times, with and without the Lady. Still, even thousands of times later, it was put a thrill through her spine. One of excitement and of fear, and it was greater with the Lady Diana. The creatures that her Lady, the goddess, chose to hunt herself were often far more dangerous than usual.

She looked to Aria, moving close to the French Hunter that had been her long time sister in the Hunt. "How do you think our younger sisters will do?"

Em took up an achingly familiar position in the group, towards the back of it. She tended to move a few seconds slower to the rest of hunters, her old injury making her slightly slower than the rest.
The short girl still moved with a slight limp now, her right leg ached every so often. But it was nothing she could not handle. Besides, it would be good to take part in a hunt. She kept her own council, remaining silent, ever watchful. She found herself feeling distinctly hopeful about the prospect of a hunt.

Aria ducked underneath a branch. "They'll be fine. A nest of scorpions is good for building character anyway."

They continued their run throughout the rest of the morning, stopping only once to enjoy grilled trout and cereal bars for lunch. Then the hunt resumed. At dinner time, they had reached the general location of Spring Hill and threw open their tents in a glade, starting to discuss guarding times. Normally, their wolves and falcons were their guardians during the night, but right now they only had Nymeria (Aria's massive she-wolf) and Mr Angry-Face (Asina's owl).

"Go to sleep," Artemis told them, wiping her mouth as they were all sitting around the camp fire with sausages on spits. "We are more than cared for." Turning her head to the side, she let out a loud whistle that almost sounded like a bird call. A few seconds later, several coyotes and two bobcats crept out of the undergrowth, circling the small encampment. Even an alligator joined them, resting its long scaly body against the side of one of the tents. It looked almost asleep but Aria's sharp vision showed her that its eyes were still open and vigilant. Smiling, she nodded and finished her sausage; then she stood up and took a light bow.

"Good night, sisters," she said and disappeared into the tent she'd share with Asina in a sweep of silver fabric.

She stayed awake for quite a while, staring into the void. The tents were quite spacious, fitted with carpets and actual beds. Animal and monster heads decorated the sides, trophies of previous hunts, and a small fridge in the corner could provide you with almost any food or drink you wanted. Aria rolled to her side and placed one hand under her ear, staring at the white, furry carpet before glancing at Asina and closing her eyes. She needed as much sleep as she could get.

Sleep proved difficult for at least one Hunter, Em tossed and turn restlessly on her bed. Eventually giving up on the prospect of sleep happening any time soon. She silently in her head began to rehearse all of the moves she had been shown in her life as a Hunter. Aria had taught her well, she wished she could be even half as good as a Hunter as her teacher happened to be. Her right leg throbbed, but at least she could walk.

(OOC: So very sorry for the delay... I was busy but... on with the RP!)

Erasmia couldn't get to sleep. She was too tense. She'd never been on such a major hunt before, but now... it was like a form of initiation. Something to prove she belonged in the Hunters. True, she'd taken the pledge, but she still stuck out like a sore thumb. As one of the newer, more awkward Hunters, she wanted to earn her place. She could never remember wanting to fit in before, but now she did. If she couldn't... that would be unbearable.
Ugh. Shut up, brain. Don't be so negative.
But she could curse her thoughts all she wanted. It wasn't going to help her. Yawning, she slowly grew tired. Her consciousness began to drift away.

The next morning, the hunt resumed. After having feasted on cereal, fried eggs and pancakes, the four Hunters and the goddess ran and trekked their way down Florida's panhandle, which took only a few hours thanks to their enhanced speed.

Artemis raised a hand, signaling for all of them to stop. "We are about three miles away from the nest. I can sense them," she said. "Do not charge all at once; if you do one of two things will happen. Either we will be surrounded or we will split up in the middle of the battlefield. I want you to stick together two and two, is that understood? Em, you go with Asina. Aria, with Mia."

Wait what? Aria was about to protest. Ever since Em had joined the hunt, she had been her mentor.  She had been the one taking care of her, teaching her, showing her hunting tricks and the different ways of building traps or setting up trick snares. She didn't like being suddenly separated from her.
But the will of the goddess was not to be questioned. After the initial surprise, she nodded in respect and turned to Mia with a regal, but encouraging smile.

"It will be fun," she said.

Asina nodded and bowed her head in respect to her Lady, then turned to Em. "Do you have a preference going point or being in the rear guard?" She asked, hoisting her spear up and checking the wood for splinters of weaknesses for a second.
