Paeben MacTyr - Notus Empty Paeben MacTyr - Notus

Post by BenMacTyr 7/1/2017, 2:41 am

Name: Paeben Ryuji MacTyr; nickname of "Ben"

    Age: 15

    Gender: Female

    Eyes: Green

Hair: Dark Brown; straight; current length at her middle back; Usually pulled up into a bun or a pony tail.

    Height: 5 foot 5

Body Type: Naturally athletic build; She worked out regularly, finding it the best way to cope with her ADHD; She accompanied her mother on storm chases and would find herself needing her strength, speed, and agility to get out of sticky situations.

    Skin Color: Natural golden tan

God Parent: Notus, god of the wet and south wind; His mortal form was a Scottish storm-chaser by the name of Jameson MacTyr. He had sandy hair and bright blue eyes.

Mortal Parent: Mae-Yu Ryuji; Mae-Yu was only 20 years old when she met Jameson MacTyr. She, a Texas native born to Chinese immigrants, was a storm-chaser. Her days were spent calculating and researching the natural disasters. Tornadoes, floods, thunderstorms, lightening storms, tsunamis. She loved them all, but her favourites were hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones. Mae-Yu absolutely had to be in the centre of hurricanes. A wild girl whose hair was cut into a bright violet pixie cut, she met Jameson during one of her more daring hurricane chases. Her crew of 5 had traveled to the Yucatan Peninsula in anticipation of a horrible tropical cyclone. Sitting in a local bar, speaking with the locals about the upcoming storm, Mae-Yu had her attention grabbed by a rather UK sounding accent. Another storm crew had joined them in the bar, and she was immediately smitten with the Scottish man who seemed to be the ring-leader. Striking up conversation with the man, named Jameson MacTyr, was easy enough, and their spark lit the flame that resulted in them spending the next 8 days of hurricane together. After that, Mae-Yu never saw him again. Mae-Yu always told Paeben, "Your daddy was a hurricane: fast, wild, and dangerous. Sticks around for a week and disappears into thin air. He was the biggest--greatest--storm I've ever chased. And any other after him seemed tame."

Country of Origin: United States of America; specifically Houston, Texas.

Pets: None; As Mae-Yu and Ben were on the road most of her childhood, she never kept any pets, though she loved dogs and their perception of oncoming storms.

    Talents:
    • Identify weather patterns
      - This is something she learned from her mother; She is able to identify different types of clouds, tell with slightly-above-average accuracy what type of weather can be expected, and track storms and stormy patterns.
    • Basic first aid
      - Storm-chasing is a dangerous profession, so Ben learned how to patch up cuts and wounds as well as bind up injured limbs. Blood does not make her queasy, but needles do. Shots, stitches, IVs, piercings, or basically any type of needle that would stay in a person for any length of time makes her sick.
    • Rock climbing, rubble walking, and cave navigating
      - After a massive storm would hit, Ben, Mae-Yu, and her crew would go sifting through the rubble, helping survivors and looking for "treasures". This led her to learn how to scale up cliffs and piles of rock with ease. She was able to swiftly make her way through a building turned to rubble. Her time spent in caves was minimal, but her time spent crawling through storm drains and destroyed basements was enough to fulfill her wishes. Still, even with her experience, she did get the occasional bone bruise and sprained ankle.
    • Singing
      - Okay, so, it's not as if Ben was good at singing. Actually, she was quite mediocre at it. But it was a great way to pass the time while exploring abandoned, destroyed factories, and it kept her crew aware of her position. She had a knack for making songs out of situations, even if they were silly little rhymes and tunes.
    • Reassurance, comfort, and optimism
      - Years in destruction taught Ben how to treat the families of disasters. She was very good at comforting families in their time of grief and need, reassuring them that everything will be okay, and giving them an overwhelming wave of optimism and hope.
    • Photography
      - This was a passion of Ben's. It started as a necessity, taking pictures of storms and the aftermath in towns. Ben, however, found herself taking pictures when they weren't on a chase, or taking pictures of things in the storm that her mother and the crew had no use for: a blonde dog standing among grey ruins; a dirty child crying with a colour emphasis of her purple coat and pink hat; a red fire hydrant against dirt and decay. She liked taking these pictures, and she believed that she could make art of it.

Weapon**: A celestial bronze Labrys named Whirlwind. The double-bitted axe was typically used in Crete to as a tie to female divinities, and females that wielded them were seen to have high-status in the community. Ben didn't want that; she just really liked the way the axe swung. She didn't decide on a Labrys until after having been at Camp Half-Blood for a year, training with an assortment of weapons. The axe was her favourite. She named it after her father. It was collapsible to three rings, one on her thumb, middle finger, and pinky. Her thumb ring and pinky rings had one blade as the insignia, and her middle finger had a simple straight bar that ran along her knuckle. The axe seemed to melt together from the rings and apart into the rings as needed.

Personality: Following in her mother's footsteps, Paeben is a loud-talking, brash-speaking, no-filtered lass. She had a Texan twang to match with her outgoing friendliness. She was the human personification of southern hospitality. Moving around from city to city in different countries, with Houston as her home base, made Paeben mimic her mother in their care-free ways of making friends of strangers. Most times, her topic of conversation were storms. She discussed air currents and the best way to survive a storm.

Similar to her mother, and in her father's likeness, her fiery temper can bring forth a destructive storm. She was quick witted with a short fuse, so those who tested her patience found that she had none. "Head as hot as a Texan heat wave," her mother described her. It came with the lifestyle, protecting ones information and self from those who wished harm upon them. Paeben was trusting of all to begin with, but when she was given any reason to not like/trust somebody, it took a miracle for that person to crawl back into her good graces.

Paeben grew up in the storm-chasing community, but that was not how she wanted to continue her life. Ben wanted to travel the world to see life in towns, not see how they were destroyed. She wanted to grow up to be a photographer. She wanted to take pictures to make people happy and to share the beauty of the world. But she didn't want to stay in one spot. She wanted to be as free as the wind, free to blow whichever way she wanted, and free to go anywhere in the world.

An only child and the only child in her mother's crew, Ben yearned for siblings. She had travelled so often and so far, she had seen families of all types. But she had nobody to share her experience with. Siblings would be a great welcome to her life, as would any lasting friendships. She doesn't have much or any expectation of friendships, however, though she will always be friendly.

    Flaws:
    • Quick and fiery temper
      - Quick to fight, fight to damage.
    • Underlying loner tendencies
      - Because of her lack of faith in lasting friendships, Ben tends to spend her free time on her own, isolated from others. When in a social situation, she will be social, but she does not go out of her way to seek these situations. Given a choice between attending a party or sitting alone on the beach, she will almost always choose the latter.
    • Overly optimistic
      - When it comes to most things, Ben has tunnel-vision on the silver lining. She always sees the good, blinding her to the darkness and gravity of the situation. Irritating as it may be, Ben continues to hold onto hope, even if it is a false hope, making her seem naiive with her head in the clouds. She is not always the best when it comes to seeing the negative sides to an idea, but she could think of at least one positive for anything.
    • Brash and blunt
      - Sometimes, Ben just can't hold her tongue. She will almost always speak the truth, no matter how hurtful it may be. Growing up with a rough and tough crew as her mentors, she didn't exactly learn the art of finesse. She did not always speak her mind, but when she spoke, it was sure to be exactly what she thought and how she felt.
    • Poor projectile aiming
     - As it could be simply stated, Ben is bad at throwing. Her skills--well, lack thereof--were not limited to throwing baseballs and stones. It extended out to archery, throwing knives, even simply tossing a pillow at someone. Despite her accuracy in hand-to-hand combat, Ben just had really sucky aim with projectiles. The only thing she could throw was a game, which she did every time someone made her quarterback.
    • Thick, horizontal scar on the back of her right hand, from her thumb knuckle to her middle finger knuckle, about an inch thick.
    - She received this when she was digging through debris at age 10. A stone slab almost crushed her hand, but she was rescued by her mother. She went through surgery and physical therapy, almost losing usage of the hand. She did make a recovery, however, she will find her hand stiff and hard to use on some days.

Abilities (must relate to god parent; optional):
    • Sensitivity to oncoming storms
      - A feeling in the pit of her stomach, just below her navel, could tell her about an oncoming storm. She didn't always know what kind of storm it would be, but she knew it would include rain and wind. That's all she needs really, with her training in weather watching. She was able to identify storms rather easily because of it. Unfortunately, the gut feeling did not tell her when the storm would hit. It could be within minutes of it starting, and the longest out she got the feeling was for an entire week before it hit. The length of the feeling did not tell her the severity of the storm, either. As it turned out, the week-long feeling led up to a tiny rainstorm that lasted the better part of half an hour.
    • Natural confidence in a storm
      - This may have also been from her upbringing, but Ben had always felt comfortable in a storm, particularly the tropical ones. She was unafraid of the rain, the fast winds, and the crackling thunder/lightening combo. She felt most as ease when the weather was wet and gloomy. Unfortunately for her, it wasn't often that this happened. The sunlight and still winds weather annoyed her.

Powers (must relate to god parent; optional):
    • Burst of wet, hot wind (Advanced beginner level)
      - A short burst of wind that is directed at: 1) a single target or 2) a group of targets.
         1) When aimed at a single target, the burst can last up to five seconds, battering the opponent with a warm wind and sharp droplets of rain. It can be used with at least 4 posts of resting time between posts.
         2) When aimed at a group of targets, the burst can last up to two seconds, whether it be for 2 targets or 20. The energy needed to focus it on multiple people is exhausting, and it needs at least 8 posts of resting time between posts.
    • Focus on air currents (Advanced beginner level)
      - Closing her eyes and focusing on how the wind moves, on the updrafts and downdrafts and thermal rises, she was able to get a topography of the area within: 1) a 50 foot radius, 2) a 75 foot radius, or 3) a 100 foot radius.
         1) A 50 foot radius focus could be done with a 3 post rest between.
         2) A 75 foot radius focus could be done with a 5 post rest between.
         3) A 100 foot radius focus could be done with a 7 post rest afterward before any other air focus and can only be used once a day.
    • Air whip (Novice level) (Possible future power)
      - Focusing her energy to whip a target(s) with a sharp burst of air. An air manifestation of a bull whip. She is unable to use this power at this time as she does not have the talent, focus, or energy for it quite yet. This is something she will be actively practicing and working on in posts, however, so I wanted to note it as a future power in the event that she does develop it.

Life Before Camp*: Paeben called Houston, Texas her home, but her real home was on the road, in airplanes, armored trucks, and battered shelters. She never went to a formal school, doing all of it online and through at-home course work. It didn't matter much, though, as she could hardly read a word anyways with her dyslexia. Her life on the road took her around the world, a privilege many would never have in their life. She was used to learning new customs and meeting all different types of people, just for a chance at a storm. She was extremely close to her mother and the crew, they being her little tight-knit family. They had just returned to Houston from a fortnight stint in the Philippines for a monsoon when Ben and Mae-Yu were found by a Satyr. It was the Satyr that explained everything to her as he brought her to the camp. She was 13 at the start of her first year there. That year and the next (last year), were spent with her head down and eyes averted. She had only been there for the summer, spending the "school" year with her mother on the road. This year, however, she was going to be there the full year while her mother and crew took an inexperienced, novice crew on a year trip. This year, Paeben was going to start making connections and friends, maybe actually grow some roots.

    RP Example*:

A smirk pulled at Paeben's lips as she raised the butt-end of her pen to her lips. Her green eyes scanned the paper as the black etchings swam around, chasing the so-called "letters" that were supposed to form words. As far as she was concerned, they were just little gnats that occasionally resembled something to read. Every once in a while, she was forced to take a test to send in to some know-it-alls to prove that her mother was, in fact, teaching her while on the road. It was paddy whack, as far as she was concerned. She didn't need to know how to write a metaphor! She needed to know how to properly barricade a wooden door for a windstorm! She could feel her frustration turning her smirk into a grimace, and a fire burned its slow way up the veins in her neck. Her head was starting to feel heavy, and she could start smell a mixture of blood and humidity, the indication of her wrath. "It's 'b'," a small whisper was directed to her. She looked up to see her mother looking at a computer screen innocently, the other crew members pretending to not pay any attention to the young girl hunched over her test at the motel table. Her eyes narrowed on them as she scrutinised their features. Gerald, one of the drivers in the crew, broke the air with a smile, earning him a finger point and a loud, "HA!" The room erupted into a hearty laughter, excuses and words tumbling out of Gerald as Paeben, success in her grin, circled option "b".

Any notes about your characters: While interested in photography, Paeben has neither formal training nor her own camera.

    Flaws
-Needs at least one physical flaw.

    Powers
-Please half the distances for the air current power.

The rest looks good, I like how in depth you went for a lot of her traits and such.

    Flaws
-I still don't see a physical flaw. What i mean by that is like a scar she has, or something like big ears that she's insecure about and so on and so forth.
