I sat down on the bed, bored and tired. I started marking my bunk with everything I owned: shell necklaces - my mother's goodbye gift, the broken pieces of my surfboard - I couldn't let them go, and my clothes. Just a couple of board shorts, two pairs of flip flops, and three orange camp shirts.
I sat in silence, bored out of my mind. Then I realized that I had one more thing that I hadn't unpacked yet. I unzipped my backpack and took out the framed photo of my mother. I stared at her, her flowing brown hair framing her tanned, beautiful face, smiling at me.As my mood lifted, so did the shells on the necklaces - not too fast, but gradually rising higher and higher until they levitated two inches off the ground. I smiled. Everything was going to be fine. I had a home here as well. Thinking this, I got up, changed into a pair of shorts, no shirt, and a couple of necklaces. I put on my tattered flip-flops and walked out the door, heedless of whoever admired my abs.
