The Broken Line [PRIVATE] Empty The Broken Line [PRIVATE]

Salvador couldn’t believe what he’d just saw.

As he staggered along the path, using his sword as his walking stick, he was pretty amazed to see the infirmary. Before, he was exactly sure that this camp’s little hospital will be like any other hospitals in the world…full of hospital-ish smell, white things (his experience said that doctors, nurses, and patients usually wear identical clothes, which are mostly white), medical electronic stuff, and well…sickness.
But he didn’t expect this to come.

All around him, he saw sick people—uniquely sick people. He realized that most of them—almost all, in fact—were there because of physical injuries. Some of them, he saw, wore bandages around their head. Some of them were helped and healed by other campers. Others were given Ambrosia or Nectar by satyrs. Salvador had to resist the urge to call those satyrs ‘nurses’—well…it just didn’t sound right.

He, sadly, didn’t come to watch the show. He came to experience the show. He looked awkwardly at his broken foot, and turned to Alex with a confused look. The scenery had made his brain dizzy…and he didn’t know what to do. It was his first time here, after all.

    ALEX WEST
Alex let out a sigh as she entered the infirmary. As she let the familiarity of her surroundings settle in, she managed a small wave at the heads that turned at their entrance. She could recognize her siblings and from the look on their faces, the feeling was mutual. After all, she was dripping wet, not as drenched as she was five minutes ago but still. Her red hair lay in clumps, sticking to her face and neck, and don't even get started on the state of her clothes. She glanced at Salvador, leaning on his sword, and noted his confusion. It took her a few seconds to understand. Of course - it was his first time here.

One of the healers rushed over, a lanky guy with a lopsided smile on his face. "Hey, Cam," Alex told her half-brother, giving him a slight nod as greeting (she regretted nodding - her head didn't seem to be as well as she'd thought). She jerked his head in Salvador's direction. "His foot got broken."

"And nice to see you too, Lex," the boy called Cam said, his gaze flickering to where Salvador was. "Uh... couldn't you have healed him?"

Alex looked frightened for a split-second (Has he discovered my secret?) but it faded as quickly as it came, her face assuming a cool mask. "Cameron, I am off-duty and drenched to the bone. We just walked all the way from the lake -"

"On that foot?" Cameron cut in, fixing Salvador with a horrified gaze.

"Yes," Alex forced through gritted teeth. Did he even hear the part where she was drenched? "Oh gods just... do whatever is needed for him. I'll get some nectar. My head hurts a bit. I'll be back," she added as she glanced at the son of Ares, hoping that her tone was reassuring enough.

Then she squeezed through a bunch of satyr-nurses, wondering if she would pass out before she could reach the medicine cabinet. She didn't need to worry about Salvador for now. He was in relatively safe hands - as safe as you could get in an infirmary run by kids their age and creatures with furry legs. No pressure.

Salvador blinked a few times as Alex’s sibling—whatever his name was—dragged him to the nearest, empty bed. This experience was certainly new to him, it kinda overwhelmed him. He scanned the room. He saw people with bleeding arms and legs, and—ouch—he saw a guy with a strangely bent arm. His eyes widened, but it was not because he was thinking about the poor guy, but it was because Alex was nowhere to be found.

His state was now afflicted with a usual, random mad message, and he involuntary started to grumble in his mind. After all things he’d done, did Alex just leave? Just like that? She still owed him a detailed story about that guy who hurt her—dang, he’d forgotten the name—and she really had to rest, anyway! To go around with wet clothes and a shocked mental wasn’t good for anyone…and Salvador almost thought that they could be acquaintances. Imagine fighting with her! Her determined eyes were enough to reassure him that she is a tough fighter. She would make a terrific—if not opponent, then a team mate, for the Capture the Flag game…

    “Your shoes, please.”

His thought was dispatched by the healer guy’s words and his anger melted away. “Oh,” he said bewildered. “Sorry,” Salvador looked down and realized that he still dumbly had his shoes on, and he awkwardly took them off. The healer guy shook his head in dismay as he looked at Salvador’s swollen foot and started to chant some healing words…and Salvador was flabbergasted when he felt that his bad foot was actually healing.

Alex’s half brother sat down on a chair next to Salvador’s bed, tears of sweat were flowing down his cheek. “So, Cameron’s the name,” the guy said. “Son of Apollo, at your service.”

“Salvador Warrick, son of Ares.” Salvador nodded…but as he said his identity, he began to regret it. He should’ve erased the ‘son of Ares’ phrase because now, Cameron’s blank look was starting to bother him. A lot.

“Son of Ares, huh?” Cameron scratched his head confusingly. “Dude, this is absurd. This is the first time I healed a son of Ares, brought by Alex.” When Cameron saw Salvador’s blank eyes (which perfectly mirrored his own action before), he laughed. “How long have you known her?”

“Er, not really long,” Salvador started to feel uncomfortable of this sudden interrogation. “Just known her for…15 minutes or so?”

“Now that is rare,” Cameron laughed once more. “It’s been a public secret that Alex holds a grudge against Ares’ son. She thought that you are all evil and such… a hasty generalization—no offense, man.”

This time, Salvador didn’t answer back.

    * * * * *

Salvador's leg was feeling better now, and he knew he didn't have to stay in this infirmary anymore. But the thing that bothered him a lot was that Alex hadn't come back yet. He was really curious...and well, just curious. He stood up, nodded at Cameron and left the infirmary.
