artemis' gaze stays put on the fire and her sausage as she hears aria ask a question. the girl doesn't answer her, she assumed it aimed towards emily. for a few moments there was silence, which made artemis feel a bit uncomfortable. the demigod turns her attention back towards her now burning sausage and quickly rips it out of the fire, quietly blowing on it to cool it down. it was then that emily starting talking. at the mention of water, the daughter of mania shifts her eyes to look at her fellow hunter. it was actually quite relieving to hear that someone else didn't exactly enjoy water. the thing was, emily had an excuse. she had a bad leg. artemis did not. she was perfectly healthy, but constantly carried an irrational fear with her. she had no excuse, and that made her view herself as a lame excuse for a hunter. the girl was supposed to be courageous, which she was in most aspects, but not with water. there was just something about it. along with the chilly evening air, it made her shiver and pull her knees up to her chest. she had to let go of her fears. she had to be a real hunter, like aria, who seemed to have not one single fear. the girl could only dream.
the snapping and crackling of the fire was the perfect background noise for the group's situation. the image of the group sitting around the campfire was picture-perfect. artemis took tiny bites out of her sausage, savoring its flavor for as long as she could. everything was quiet besides the sounds of the fire as it consumed the twigs and bark that aria had gathered earlier on. the daughter of mania was surprisingly not too hungry. she ate half of her sausage and gave the rest to nymeria. she wasn't sure if she was just hearing things or not, but the girl could swear that she heard a quiet growling in the distance. the demigod quickly stands up and briskly makes her way over to the edge of the trees. she stands there for a few seconds, listening. there in the thick of the trees were two, no four eyes, all of them changing color rapidly. without a sound, the demigod starts making her way slowly towards the eyes. as she got closer and closer they seemed to get farther and farther away. her mind was playing tricks on her, but was not aware of that. it was an awful time for the demigod to fall victim to one of her episodes, so of course she would get taken captive by her mind.
as she walks forward, the growling noise starts to grow in intensity. suddenly, a wraith-like figure appears in front of her. without hesitation, the demigod throws a punch, but feels her hand contact with nothing but the hard surface of a tree. she quickly turns herself around to see the wraith behind her, which she throws a punch at yet again; there goes another tree fallen victim to her useless punches. three, four, five more times the wraith appears and every time artemis finds herself connecting her bare fists with bark. her hands now warm and sticky from the blood that oozed from her knuckles, artemis searches for the wraith, which had seemingly disappeared. in the distance she could see the eyes once more. instantly, the girl was sprinting as fast as she could, every so often tripping and bashing her knees on rocks and smacking into trees face-first. her vision started to blur and her legs began to grow weary. the eyes still watched and mocked her though. she had to destroy them. after quickly rebounding from taking a light fall onto the ground, artemis bursts into a small clearing in the woods. the demigod slowly walks around the perimeter, every so often doubling back to make sure nothing was behind her. she could feel a presence all around her. she could hear it quietly whisper her name. it taunted her and beckoned her closer. artemis couldn't resist. she had to find out the source.
as she walks into the middle of the clearing, everything went dark. suddenly, four spotlights appear, fixed on the demigod. she could hear a loud growl as well. shading her eyes with her right hand, the girl turns around to face the source of the lights. no
"no. no, no, no, no!" the girl says, her voice shifting from a whisper to border-line shout. she stares blankly into the source of the light: four eyes. the last thing she sees is the gaping jaw and teeth as the creature engulfs the demigod.
back in the real world, the demigod had ran into the woods, punched a few trees, tripped over a dozen rocks and tree roots, ran into an area full of prickly bushes, and curled up in a ball, repeating the word "no" over and over. now the demigod, still lost in her mind, was slowly crawling back towards the campfire, which, in her eyes, appeared to the only source of light around. light is good. the phrase echoed in her mind multiple times as she makes her way towards the fire. once on the outskirts of the clearing, the demigod drops onto the ground, unable to move. why can't i move? i need to get closer! the words are narrated in her head by a voice that did not sound like hers to her. her eyes stayed focused on the light though. it slowly started to dim and fade away though, which made the girl repeat the word "no" a few more times. she couldn't give up now. she had to get into the light. how could she if she couldn't move?
after a few seconds, everything around her went black, including her thoughts. she was left laying on her side, her pants, shirt, and skin cut and torn from the thistles, her hands caked with mud and blood, and her eyes closed. she was in sight from the fire, which was a good thing for her. the episode was over, and in its place it left a girl, who just a little while ago was well composed and seemed perfectly okay. nothing was okay for artemis though. nothing would ever be simply okay.
