He listened quietly as she started to talk, showing him a picture of her Ex Boyfriend. It might have been a bad idea to ask, but he went ahead and asked. "What happened?"

"That's what I have to talk to you about..." I hold the book towards me, hiding the pages from him. I hesitantly turn to a page in the back of the book. My fingers tremble. I look up at him with innocent, clear, crips, blue, eyes, "You REALLY won't hate me?"

I take a deep breathe and show him the picture. It's of me, sitting on my couch, holding a baby. "...That's...That's not my sister."

Thomas understood immediately. and his reaction was completely natural for him. He sat on the bed next to her, and put an arm around her. He looked at her kindly, not knowing what to make of her. Maybe it was all the perfume getting to his head, but he found it likely that he liked her, in spite of the fact they really only just met. He gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze, and said the one word that came to his mind. "Congratulations."

For some reason, out of nowhere, I burst into tears, unable to stop. No one had ever been so okay with me before. No one had ever accepted me after I showed them that picture. After I said those words. I hated myself and so did everyone else. I didn't know what to do when someone didn't walk away.

Thomas was surprised by her sudden outburst of emotion. he hugged her to him, pressing her body to his as he let her cry on him, feeling a concern emanating within him for her... a caring, a need to make her feel better... and none of that "there there" stuff. That never worked on him after his family was slaughtered. All he really did was hold her body to his, occasionally patting her back as her tears soaked through the shoulder of his shirt. He was supposed to be good with words. Yet here he was, with a girl in his arms, crying her eyes out, and he didn't know what to say... Then he thought of something. "Where's your daughter now?"

I tried to stop crying. I sniffed, "Um," my voice was shaking, 'She's at my old house in Seattle with my parents." I eyeliner and mascara start to run, "And I can't be there to watch her grow up!"

Thomas was mildly shocked at this. Her daughter wasnt allowed to have her mother? "Would you like to visit her? see how she's doing? or... are you not allowed?"

I sigh, "I don't even know anymore. My mom...step mom would be okay with it. But not my dad." My voice starts to shake again, "She's only 1!"

Thomas frowned. "As the girl's mother, you should have every right to take care of and visit her. Would you mind," he asked again, "If I were to take you home?"

Thomas got up, and brushed off his jeans. "Sure. Maybe I'll smack some sense into your dad while I'm at it." He took her hand, strictly with the intention of pulling her up, when a tingling ran down his arm, as though her touch meant something. He shook the feeling out. More than likely, he wasn't her type, what with the whole "traveling cowboy" look. Pulling her up, he accidentally pulled a little too hard, and found her in his arms again. He looked at her, not sure what exactly it was that was turning his insides into a mosh pit. For a brief second, he was tempted to kiss her... blasted fumes, the boy thought.

I blushed lightly, "Thank you..." I whispered. Don't kiss him, Jennifer. That is almost never a good idea.
