Theo smirked at him. That was smooth, he thought. "Right. You may not care about our past, you may think Athena gives a **** about whether you're alive or dead, and that's fine. I couldn't care less." He didn't care about much these days, the gods least of all. They could all get down off their high horses and see what their kids lives were like. Maybe then they'd do something to help them out. "My entire family abandoned me. My dad even before I knew him, and my mom when I was eight." His voice was bitter, eyes hard. "You may cling to the ideal that the gods still care, but most probably don't even know we exist." He glared at Mason, unsympathetic. "You learn to fend for yourself, even if it means taking someone's life. Sometimes you don't have a choice. That's the way it works." He kicked a rock angrily. "No one ever cared whether I was alive or not. If my dad cared at all, he might have lent a hand once in a while. I owe nothing to the gods, but a parent is supposed to recognize their kids." With that, he turned and walked off. He was so angry, he forgot to say good-bye to Alex.

Jasper walked down to the lake, head bowed, eyes averted. He didn't know why he kept ending up at bodies of water. Maybe it was something to do with the fact that Acheron was a river. He dropped down on a rock, worn smooth, a little ways away from the group and gazed out, over the water.
