Preparing for prom (private, active)

It was 5 p.m. and prom would get started in an hour. However, Lakisha knew she wouldn't be ready in an hour, and she didn't want to be - hey, she was prom queen, why should she hurry? Party wouldn't get started until she walked in.

She walked into her cabin with her usual, determined yet casual footsteps, and closed the door behind her. As always, she stood still for a second or so, the time to enjoy the freezing breeze that always crept around in the Khione cabin. Then, she walked over to her bunk, which was against the wall. The sheets were always neatly folded, but she didn't pay attention to that: she got down and took her trunk out from under her bunk bed.

She opened it, and took out something that was wrapped in a piece of dark red silk. She put the silk aside and held her prom dress up.
It was truly a beautiful piece.
The dress had a white corselet held together by a serie of brown leather straps, and the skirt was made of maya blue silk on which danced creamy and cyan highlights. It was cut on the side in order to let one leg show, and over that cut was a bronze-colored gear behind which were attached rows of stabilized cloth (satin, silk and velvet) embroidered with silvery threads.
Above the corselet was a kind of vest held on her bust, completely made of leather, that would run down her arms to end up as a pair of mittens. Those sleeves included silvery threads as well.
Finally, there was her hat, a normal black top-hat, with complicated, elaborate steam-punk-ish glasses.

Shoes and a stick where going with that too, but Lakisha put her dress and hat carefully on her bed, and turned to her half-sister and lieutenant, Jea Snowe. She was the one to get prepared with her.

"Let's get started?" she asked her with a smile.

Jea, preoccupied with laying out her dress and seeking her necklace, didn't notice the cabin leader, Lakisha, walk in. As Lakisha closed the door, Jea jumped a little. She calmed down, seeing it was only her half-sister.

While Lakisha was getting out her steam punk-esque prom dress (which she'd taken a peek of some days ago, when Lakisha was just putting it in her trunk, and of what she saw was beautiful), Jea took a moment to examine hers, relieving herself of her crouching position on the floor.

Her dress was simple, as simple as any steam punk prom dress could be. The top half of the dress was focused on a long, maroon leather corset, shaped to her lean figure (or as much of a figure as she had). Three buckles were attached to the sides and front. Coming out from under the corset was a brown fabric, ruffled throughout. The dress was probably shorter than your typical steam punk dress, but Jea added laced-up tall boots to minimize showy skin, being the conservative girl she was. Also, one of her favorite parts of the dress, there was a handy little pocket watch dangling from the corset. Of course, it wouldn't really be used, but it was the little things that count.

Speaking of little things, where could her necklace have gone?

Looking around the cabin once more, Jea sighed, stopping her search for the time being. "Sure," Jea responded quietly, as was her nature, with a return smile. She had the honor to get ready with her half-sister, and prom queen. "Can't wait."

The young woman didn't know why, but Jea was one of the few people Lakisha liked. In fact, she was actually fond of her. She didn't go around like other demigods, boasting about herself, and that was like redemption to Lakisha.
She smiled at her half-sister.

"Well, the first thing is to take a shower," she said with a chuckle. "Fortunately we've got two."

She was right: of course, they wouldn't be using the Camp showers (they were probably already blocked by the Aphrodite children who hadn't enough space in their own cabin's bathroom. They would use the showers they had in their cabin.

Since they were alone (the rest of the cabin being already at prom), Lakisha suggested she would go to the boys's bathroom and Jea would take the girls's.

With a last smile, Lakisha took a towel, shampoo, soap, hair brush and disappeared into the boys's bathrooms.
There, she took off the clothes she had on, adjusted the shower temperature to freezing cold and stepped inside eagerly.
The biting iciness made adrenaline rush in Lakisha's veins and she closed her eyes. She loved the way coldness made her feel. She felt more vivid, more energetic, more.... alive.

Her shower didn't last long. Lakisha shampooed her hair with a Panthene Pro-V in order to make them silky and add to their volume, then washed the white foam out of her wet hair.

Being done with the shower, she stepped out of it and dried herself with her ice blue towel, binding it around her body. Then, she took another towel and wrapped her hair up in it, making it not dry, but humid.
After that, Lakisha went out of the boys's bathroom, taking her stuff with her, and stopped at her bunk to pull out hair spray and washbag. She rose again and tapped at the girls's bathroom door.

"May I come in?" she asked.

Fortunately, Jea was done with her shower too, so they was no awkward moment when the young Swedish woman walked in.
Either way, Lakisha preferred to be in the girls's bathroom than in the boys's, she felt more at ease, and besides, they were preparing together, not separately.

Lakisha put her hair on her shoulders in two big streaks. She took the right one and impregnated it with the volume-spray, from the roots to the spikes, then she dried her hair head down. She brushed it head done too with a round brush in order to give the hair movement, then she straightened up, took out a curler and
used it to amplify the wavy air of the streaks around her face.
After that, she bent forward do put her head down, and uncombed the hair with her fingers.

The effect of it was a casual yet sensual dishevel, looking silky and glossy in the light of the bathroom lamps.

Lakisha smiled at Jea, then started working on the other strand of her hair.

She bound it together in a serie of entwined streaks, and pinned it up with silver barrettes set with tiny brilliants (cut diamonds). Those barrettes were really expensive, so she didn't put much of them into her hair.

Turning at her half-sister, she gave her her signature smile: one corner of her mouth was smiling wider than the other one, and it looked a tad bit mischievous.

"Do you want me to comb your hair?" she asked.

Jea nodded eagerly at the mention of a shower. That sounded great right about now. She'd made the mistake of having a hard training day, while most other girls (well, the Aphrodite cabin specifically) took the day off from training so they could start to get ready and organize things.

Jea, just coming back from sword lessons and volleyball, would like nothing more than a cold shower.

Beginning to protest that she could go into the boys bathroom, she stopped, seeing Lakisha already gathering her stuff and moving away. She appreciated Lakisha letting Jea use the girls bathroom. Something about the guys bathroom just made her squirm, although she would've gone in if she had too. Lakisha was her favorite half-sibling, and the only one she really even talked too. At the start, Lakisha seemed like she didn't want much to do with her, or at the least hesitant to befriend her, but pretty soon she warmed up (no pun intended) to Jea. She was one of the first to be friendly towards her, and Jea looked up to Lakisha.

Jea picked up her soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion from a little basket by her bedside. Draping a light purple towel across her arm, she walked to the girls bathroom at the back of the cabin, he flipflops she changed into clacking on the floor.

Setting the shower to cold, she took off her camp t-shirt and shorts, stepping inside the cube, where the water was flowing like a waterfall. Squeezing soap into her palm, Jea washed herself, making sure to put shampoo and plenty of conditioner to help untangle her wild, curly hair.

As she shut the water and wrapped a towel around herself, a knock sounded on her door. "Come in," Jea said.

Jea rubbed lotion on her arms and legs, all the while watching Lakisha in fascination. She could barely do her hair herself everyday, much less make it look as good as her's did right now.

"Please," the younger girl answered. "Good luck." She added, jokingly.

Lakisha chuckled at her 'good luck'-wish.

"Aw come on, it doesn't look like tough work!" she said with a smile.

She made her half-sister sit down on the stool, facing the wall, so she could work with her hair. First off, she combed her hair thoroughly, without drying it. It took her four minutes, but at the end, they were looking really silky, despite them being wet
After that, she took out of her washbag a little lotion put into a turquoise vial. It was a styling, volume-adding cream that would hydrate Jea's humid hair. She massaged it into her chocolate-brown streaks; being done with that, she dried them with the heardryer and creased them a little with her fingers as she did so.
Then, she put the hairdryer away and wrapped some of Jea's strands around her fingers in order to create fine undulations.

It was always such a pleasure to be with Jea. She wasn't talking too much, she was not too close-lipped, either, she was just right. She was her favorite half-sister. Of course, she liked Cassiopeia too, and the others were very nice as well.... But Jea definitely outclassed them all.
Even though she was only thirteen, she was much more mature than the average demigods here. In addition, she was smart and clever, qualities Lakisha knew to appreciate and to value - that was why she had made her her second-in-command, after all. She was the most capable of the Khione children.

As she thought so, she attached the long parts of the hair in a low bun, in her neck, in order to create at the front an effect of a false short bob. With the shorter streaks she made a succession of pin curls, having them spiraling on the sides of her head and forehead. After having made them hold in place, she added a unique gear-like barrette on the back of her head, where she had made the bun. She curled the streaks of the bun so they would get down until Jea's shoulder blades in a cascade of locks, adding a Victorian flair to the whole hair style.

Finished...

Smiling, Lakisha made way so Jea could stand up and look at herself in the mirror.

"What do you think?" the cabin leader asked. "Do you like it? If you wish, I can put you a little make-up too..."

"You haven't even tried yet," Jea said softly, smiling a grateful smile, but also in a bit of amusement.

Jea went back to her old life, with her wonderful dad. How he would try several times to do her hair, but always came out more tangled than before. Jea would just laugh, in a friendly way, at his attempts. Then she would say a 'thanks' as she shooed him away, trying for herself to do her hair, or resolving to leave it down. Oh, memories.

She missed her old life so much, and even though she'd made some friends here (like Lakisha), Jea wished she could be with her dad.

A small frown played upon her face, but then went right back to a smile, seeing the now soft locks of her hair being curled into a bun. It looked flawless. Then, she watched as the shorter parts of her hair spiraled down her face nicely, her smile getting wider.

Jea felt something being pinned to the back of her head, near where the bun was. Waiting to make sure Lakisha was done, Jea stood up and felt the object. It felt like...

A barrette. Not just a regular barette, though, Jea found out by getting another smaller mirror to look. This barrette had gears all around it, in various bronze and gold colors. It matched the necklace she was going to wear almost perfectly.

"Wow..." Jea spoke, after a while. "How did you learn to do this stuff? Hair, I mean. It's awesome, thanks."

She was never much of a girly girl, so she didn't have sleepovers with girl friends doing her hair and makeup, or things like that. Just registering Lakisha's next comment, Jea thought it was extremely nice for her to offer to do both hair and makeup. "Oh, could you? I'm the worst with that stuff."

Walking back to her bunk, she reached under her bed for her drawstring bag, which held her makeup and undergarments. Opening it up, she took a peek, and, right at the bottom, there was her necklace. "How did I not check there before..?" She mumbled, getting up and bringing the bag to the bathroom.

The necklace was in the shape of a gear, a little bigger than a quarter, with other tiny gears coming off of it. Each spoke on the bigger gear was a different, metallic color.

Her makeup also had 5 assorted metallics, three of which were gold, bronze, and silver.

"If you want to use these.." Jea said, handing the rectangular case to Lakisha.

Lakisha laughed, glad Jea liked it.

"Oh, you see, I had a kind of nurse when I was younger, and she would always do my hair styles for me. But then I wanted to do it myself, so she taught me. That's how I know," she chuckled.

Jea went out of the bathroom, then came back in, carrying a box and a necklace. The young Swedish raised her eyebrows.

"That necklace looks beautiful," she stated, quite impressed (which was rare since wealthy Lakisha could afford very expensive jewelry).

And it really did. It was made of delicate gears, all in different shades of gold, silver, bronze and honey, shining up in turn when light fell on them, looking like a cascade of precious metals. Even the chain looked like a hair-thin wire.

"Perfectly steampunk," Lakisha smirked, then took the make-up bag from Jea.

She immediately saw they were nice, but it didn't look like quality; however she didn't word it in order not to offense Jea -- that was the last thing she wanted.

"I'll use them," the cabin leader said, "in combination with this --!"

Saying so, she took up her own make-up bag, and pulled out an assortment of products entitled 'Or Sunset' by l'Oréal.
Everything there had a golden nuance that would suit the prom theme perfectly.
After having made her sit down in front of the mirror, Lakisha went to work.
First, she applied khôl close to the eyelashes, and on the delicate skin of her eyelids. Then, she toned it down with her finger, drawing it across her skin.
Second, she put the eye-shadow on: black close to the eyelashes, then the golden black.
Third, she put mascara, and finally, the golden-highlighted lip gloss.

The make-up looked discrete and perfectly suited Jea's type.

Lakisha started working on herself: the same make-up as Jea, but with silver instead of gold, it suited her type better.

Once she was finished, she took out 'Senteur Royale' by Guerlain and sprayed perfume on her neck and wrists.
Finally, she put her dress on, the silk stroking her skin.
When she had put her gears-set boots on, she turned to Jea, and got her hat.

"Ready?" she asked.

"That's cool!" Jea said, although wondering slightly about the nurse. She dismissed it quickly, not wanting to be nosy or anything.

"Really? Thanks!" Jea thanks, glad she got someone's approval of it. She had no confidence, even on the littlest things. "I got it special for the prom, alhough I think i'll wear it more." Jea tells, loving the look of the necklace. "Maybe it'll be a reminder of prom."

Seeing the much bigger makeup bag of Lakisha, she stared in awe at the things she pulled out. They were more than Jea'd ever had, and probably cost way more, too.

"I love them!" She beamed. "Makeup to your heart's desire," She joked, with a light laugh.

Closing her eyes, she tries to hold still as the steady strokes of the brush swept across her eyes. Jea felt what was eyeshadow, lip gloss, and, she was guessing, mascara.

Opening her eyes hesitantly, she looked into the mirror. Lakisha was a miracle-worker.

Getting dressed, they chatted, Jea slipping on her dress. She mocked being suffocated (because of the corset), sticking her tongue out, then smiling afterwards. She stuck the boots onto her feet, tying the laces.

Looking into a full length mirror the cabin shared, she just shook her head happily. "You look great," She said, turning to Lakisha. "And, yep, ready!"

With that, she picked up a little clutch, looked at the two of them once more, and nodded. "This is gonna be fun."

Lakisha smiled, and took her stick. It was along wooden stick with gears and inlaid with platinum, and she used it to walk, like a lady used her umbrella.

"Off we are, then!" she said, taking Jea's arm.

Together, they left the Khione cabin. The prom had already begun and music could be heard even in the Courtyard. She could see demigods streaming to the Mess Hall, and she joined them with Jea, making sure their pace was not too quick.

"We should make pictures later, you know, together," she told her over the increasing intensity of the music. "There's a photograph!"

I enter, and see what I'd hoped for. Jea was there, and she was ready. I had changed into my suit and tie too, so we were good. I also saw another person I hadn't met. I say, "Jea, I'm here." I ask the girl politely, "What's your name?"
