A Balanced Breakfast (Open)

The Mess Hall was packed despite it being so early. Grabbing a plate, a goblet, and a seat at the Hermes table, I conjured up my usual breakfast of bread and cheese, fruit, and bacon with a goblet of orange juice. I sat a bit away from my cabin mates, still a bit too wary to make conversation.

Hunter had barely sat down at his table (residence with the rowdy Hermes kids) when he saw the kid who sat further away from the rest of his brothers and sisters. Too lazy to get up and since the kid was on the same bench he was on, all Hunter did was propel himself over to the kid with his breakfast by pushing off some other kid that was beside him. He knocked shoulders with the boy and grinned in apology, "Sorry about that. Do you mind me sitting here?" He asked already settling down.
"You're not new here are ya?" Hunter inquired while shoving some Cocoa puffs into his mouth and swallowing down some milk at the same time. The kid looked around his age, maybe a year younger than his 16 year old self or maybe he was older, the kid was taller than him by a couple inches.

"Sure it's no problem", I replied to the kid who sat down next to me. I explained to him that I had only arrived yesterday, so I didn't know many people in this place. "The name is Jay McKenzie. Nice to meet you." I said, reaching out my hand for a handshake.

"I'm Hunter, Hunter Evans. Nice to meet you too." Hunter replied giving Jay's hand a shake. He knew what it was like being the new kid, at some point everyone in camp had been new kids. He went back to his breakfast and wolfed it down, "So when you got escorted from camp were you attacked by a monster? Sometimes that's what happens or in some cases like myself, I was hiding from one that was chasing me when a satyr found me."

"I was run out of my town by these shadow dogs. Hellhounds I think they are called." I said, remembering the dogs' evil red eyes and razor claws.It gave me a shudder just thinking about it. "I kind of stumbled upon this place by accident. Pretty crazy how things worked out, huh?"

"Guess so," Hunter agreed with a sigh. He was full and felt like he was going to burst. Oh the downside of getting full too easily. "Hellhounds are nasty things, I almost got my head bit off by one of them in the forest."

I have yet to go into the forest, so the mentioning of those demons right in our backyard sent another chill up my spine. I looked over to Hunter's plate to see that he was done, so I gulped down the rest of my orange juice. "So Hunter, I know this is a safe haven for demigods, but what are we supposed to do with our lives now?" I felt stupid asking the question, but it was one that had been bothering me since I got here. Perhaps someone who has been my position could ease my worrying mind.

Hunter had to think about it for a while. He lifted his cup to his lips even though the glass was empty and tilted it up so he could get the very last drops into his mouth. "I guess being a demigod's no different than being a regular person besides the monsters, powers, weapons, and every day risk of dying I suppose. You get to choose what you wanna do like how you choose if you were a normal kid. You can go on quests sometimes too though most of the free time is spent either inside camp grounds or outside of it. It depends if you're staying only for the summer or for the whole year round." And then there were sometimes outbreaks of wars usually lead by camp leaders Percy or Annabeth and when or if another war broke out, Hunter had the dreading sense of just being another dead soldier in the background. He wondered if anyone else had that fear or dread.

Hunters explanation of life at Camp Half Blood put me at ease. My worry was replaced by a new excitement to explore this new life as the son of a god. It's kind of like being in a superhero movie, or like the anime show me and my old friends used to watch. "Well if that's the case, what should we do first? What do you usually do?"

Hunter raised an amused eyebrow at Jay's new found excitement to go get up and go do something, "Well there's the forest where you can hang out and encounter a couple monsters to fight if you're unlucky or lucky, depends on whether or not you want to find one. Last time I was there I killed a dragon. Then there are the arenas where you can hone your monster killing or close combat abilities. I don't know, usually I'm just wandering around. Guess it's up to you since I don't really care what I do today." Hunter said with a yawn, getting up to go put his stuff away since he was done. He came back and sat down with the urge to put his feet on the table but he knew if he did that someone would probably just push him off of it.

I weighed my options. I wasn't exactly a monster fighter just yet, so perhaps a lesson or two in swordfighting would help. I knew how to box, but I highly doubted I would win against any kind of monster in a fist fight. I grabbed Windbreaker and got up. "Maybe we could go to the training grounds. I have a sword and I have no idea how to use it", I told Hunter, showing him Windbreaker. "It's a lacrosse stick right now, but in the one battle I got into with a monster it became a short sword. Celestial bronze is what you guys call the metal right?"

"Some weapons are like that," Hunter commented. "And yeah, celestial bronze, although kids of the Underworld get stygian iron. Lucky bastards. So sword fighting arena? That's fine with me but my trademark weapon are two daggers so I'll be fighting with those instead although I do know the basic things with a sword."

Hunter knew like he knew what he was doing, so trainijg with him should interesting. "Let's go then" I said, Hunter leading the way to the battle arena.
