Post by Kwacken 5/2/2015, 11:49 am

Name: Eric Kane Connor, though he goes by Kane exclusively and WILL NOT hesitate to correct you if you call him Eric.
    Age: 16
    Gender: Male
    Eyes: Green
    Hair: Brown
    Height: 5'8
    Body Type: Lean
    Skin Color: Caucasian, easily tanned
God Parent: Dionysus, god of wine making, revelry, insanity, and fruits
    Mortal Parent: Fiona Connor
Country of Origin: Ireland, but by way of the US and Canada.
Pets: Sir Hiss, a lovely Atomic Spider morphed Ball Python. 4 years old, male, approximately 3.5ft long. Docile. Sings tenor.
Talents: Partying. Flame shots. Sound and lighting for theatre. Painting, mainly backdrops and props. Improvised prop making. Singing, surprisingly. Moonshining. Not too bad with school actually.
Weapon**: As much as Kane feels he should wield a thyrsus, he fights with a xiphon sword of celestial bronze.
    Personality:

Kane, who hates his first name, is a stand up nice guy when teachers and adults are around. Or the class clown. When teachers aren't around, he's the party guy who gets things to make good times happen.

He's a bit of a slacker at times, knowing that his future is destined for theatre as a stage hand or dying in some Greek tragedy. He doesn't study hard, but he does like to learn. Mainly he likes to learn what he wants to learn. Anything else is like pulling hen's teeth.

Because of his attitude towards all demigods dying early, or perhaps also because he's the son of the party-hearty god, Kane loves a good time. He loves providing good times. A people pleaser no doubt, but he is only really good at pleasing people with offers of drinks or fruit. He fakes confidence in everything he does, but he does it extremely well.

    Flaws:
    * Doesn't take the future seriously.
    * Can be way too much of a slacker/class clown.
    * Doesn't care about laws or rules.
    * Can be a major enabler/encourager of destructive habits/addictions.

Abilities (must relate to god parent; optional):
    * Can speak to snakes and large cats(leopards, lions, cougars, etc.)
    * Remembers everything after drinking/can't get blackout drunk. Even if he does something he doesn't want to remember.
Powers (must relate to god parent; optional):Insanity -
Kane has two powers related to insanity which cannot be used during each other's cool down phases. These can affect humans, demigods, and sentient monsters. They can both be fought through and the confusion resisted by the strong minded and disciplined.
    * Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man - Kane can cause hallucinations of the first thing a person thinks of after the power is used. He can do this to someone within a 3 meter radius. It lasts for 2 posts and has an 8 post cool down.
    * Dude, where am I? - Kane can cause temporary disorientation to place, time and situation for up to 1 post with a 6 post cool down. He must be within 2 meters.

    Fruits and Alcohol
    * Kane can grow simple berry or grape vines, up to one meter in length, with fruit. It takes 2 posts to grow them, and he has a cool down of 6 posts.
    * Kane can produce up to 8 ounces of fruit brandy, the most common being grape. It takes 1 post to make, lasts for 3 posts, with a 7 post cool down.

    Life Before Camp*:

Kane was actually born in Dublin, Ireland to a community theatre actress and organizer. She had fallen head over heels with this guy who promised her the world and told her it was hers for the taking. Blessed with acting, he said, destined for greatness, you know, the standard spiel. Still, Fiona Connor fell for it and fell for it hard. After almost a year together, she had a boy, Kane. And the love of her life gave her some vague story about Greek gods and demigods, and a camp that would train and protect their son should any monsters attack. To be honest, Fiona figured him for drunk when he said it, but her beau drank nothing but Diet Coke. He was gone two days later, leaving nothing but a note farewell and the address for the camp.

Fiona Connor ignored the note, but when she moved to New York City, New York, USA two years later, she brought the letter with her. She was trying for Broadway, but due to bring a single parent and not having fancy schooling, she was only able to get a few Off-Broadway gigs. That started Kane's life in the theatre. Coming to rehearsals with his mother. After a few years, Fiona and Kane left New York, and the US, for Ontario, Canada just north of them. Fiona got a full time job directing and coaching a theatre league in Mississauga.

Life was almost normal for Kane. Well, as normal as demigod life can be. Which is to say, it was weird. He had difficulty with school because of dyslexia and ADHD, but he was able to pass his classes. Because he wanted his mom to be happy. His passions, though, lived in the theatre. Fiona was always dealing with the acting parts, or the singing. Kane would hang out with the guys and gals backstage who rigged the lights and did the sound. Stagehands raised Kane more than his own mother, giving him advice on everything from drinking to his first crush on a schoolmate, and the humiliation after he turned him down. That part was fairly normal. And his mom consistently dating a stern, but halfway decent guy.  The only thing not normal: Kane was absolutely convinced he was a wizard, and a parselmouth at that. He had talked to snakes. First he thought he was imagining things, but after a while he knew it had to be true. Who would imagine an Irish parselmouth? Unfortunately, try as he might, he could never find stick that worked as a wand, and he wasn't able to hex bullies no matter how many times he read Harry Potter and practiced their spells.

Then there was the first monster, a giant snake, who Kane somehow managed to convince he wasn’t going to be very tasty. He must have had a good argument, because after a few minutes the snake left without attacking. Kane understandably freaked out. He told his stagehand buddies, his mom, his school counselor, the ER doctor and two psychologists. He told them everything. About seeing animals that shouldn’t exist, about talking to snakes, about sometimes thinking his teachers were evil creatures. This might have been a horrible, awful, awful mistake. Or it could have saved his life. He’ll never really know. What he does know is that what happened next was several years of intense therapy and medications to control his “auditory and visual hallucinations”, “delusions” and “paranoia.”

The powers that he should have grown during that time didn’t manifest themselves much during his treatments. It was harder to talk to snakes. He admitted he probably wasn’t a wizard. School was weird for him, because his mother tried to keep the rumors away, but everyone knew he was on medication and had several absences. His attention span was next to nothing, and his grades were awful. After a few years, he was severely depressed and thought he would never be normal. So he stopped taking the medications entirely, learning how to pocket them in his cheek and spit them out, and telling the lies the doctors wanted to hear. This was either a really wonderful move for him, or the worst move he made in his life. He felt more lively, he felt wonderful. He could talk to his snake friends, and see the things he had before. This also meant the monsters came again.

Not all monsters, apparently, care about actually killing the demigods. Some are quite content with leaving demigods useless. So it came to pass that Kane ended up caught not taking his meds. Well, no, he was caught running from a Hyperborean Giant during the dead of winter, and he couldn’t explain well enough he wasn’t trying to jump from a bridge, he was trying to climb to hide under it. So, it was a 72 hour psych hold, in-patient facility. Disapproving mom in the background. And...his doctor was a manticore. At this point in time, it was fairly safe to say that Kane was not being cooperative, although he had convinced himself to a point that he really was imaging things. His 72 hour psych hold turned into a 30 day psych hold. He was labelled as violent, where he had previously not been. The boy developed a severe fear of quiet rooms and needles.

So what changed to prevent Kane Connor from spending his entire life as a medicated fruitcake? A tree nymph named Sue who worked as a landscaper for the inpatient facility. She got in touch with a satyr, Franklin Cooper, who used the mist to haggle a release for Kane. Fiona was there to pick him up when his doctor realized he was escaping, and that was not acceptable. Goat fur and bark flew as Sue and Franklin fought against the manticore, screaming at Kane’s mother to take him to the camp his father had written about. Okay. So, at that point, Fiona Cooper, who had spent a good portion of her son’s life thinking he was insane, became a believer, and drove straight away down into the US for Long Island. Good thing about easy customs.

At Camp Half-Blood, Kane was quickly claimed by Mr. D, the camp director, who happily explained everything with great enthusiasm over a game of pinochle. Kane was dumbfounded and rather disappointed that he wasn’t a wizard, but he guessed being a demigod was close enough. He had a good summer at camp, then went home to his mother. Well, kind of went home. His mother moved across country to Calgary, because she apparently liked miserable winters. Or probably more because he couldn’t return to Mississauga after the whole psych thing.

Surprisingly, life was good for most of the school year. He did well in school, he made friends, he lived for the school's drama club. Well, he also got into alcohol and weed because it was easier to look like a stoner than admit some of his slow responses and word finding difficulties were due to strong antipsychotics. He was looking forward to a new summer at camp, and even getting to see and talk to his dad, when something happened that forced his hand.

Ever been chased by a chimera across a town? Sixteen years old, Kane was thinking about learning how to drive. His mother, on the other hand, was thinking about never letting him. So he was in the passenger’s seat when they were stopped by police for a traffic violation. Years of conditioning against police, Kane started acting tense. So, police were getting ready to pull the two out and search the car. Then a chimera appeared in full and glorious form. Kane rammed his mom’s shoulder out of the way, pushed the car into drive and slammed on the gas. She was able to get control of the car quickly, but he explained the issue as she did. After previous incidents, she decided to believe him and did the most amazing thing he had ever seen. She gave the chimera, and about ten Calgary police cruisers, a high speed chase the town would remember for a while.

The mist changes things, memories, perceptions, it changes the truth. So when the chase ended, Kane was both surprised and not to see the mist had changed everything. Not so much for the better. His mother was arrested for fleeing the police, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment, and a slew of other charges. He was not. It really hurt him that he caused her that much pain, and when she was sentenced to four years in prison, she made sure he was sent off to live with his father. In the US. At Camp Half-Blood. So much for a summer camp.
