Bri Jasper, the reluctant daughter of Aphrodite, stood and watched the water. She couldn't help thinking about her life at Camp so far. After searching forever, she didn't expect a lot of teens running around playing volleyball or singing around the campfire. Bri always thought they would be constantly under attack when she was trying to get to Camp Half-Blood. Then, being claimed by the goddess of love and having siblings with pretty, gossiping girls and boys did not really improve her mood. Now, new to Camp with no friends, Bri felt alone. Her father always ignored her and she never had friends at her prep school, so she thought things would change when she was around people like her, but she guess not.

Everyone she meet either looked at her like a posh Aphrodite kid or were too posh and thought she was beneath them. So she took to training. She happened to be really good with a sword, mostly due to large periods of intense practice. A part of her was training so hard as a jab at Aphrodite. A way of getting back at her for being her mother. Being everything a daughter of Aphrodite really wasn't: fighting, not caring about looks (which she didn't before), clothes, gossip, or falling in love. She even considered joining the Hunters of Artemis, but they were never around.

She let out a sigh and looked out to the water, praying for any god/goddess that would listen for something to finally go good in her life.

David was strolling through camp. He had just arrived for the summer session and was glad to be back: home was great and all, but nothing beats a camp for mythological heroes. Not even Yellowstone.
The son of Athena had dropped his bags in his cabin and immediately left for a walk on the beach. The environment was, for some reason, much more beautiful inside camp's magic boundaries. Richer, healthier. He figured it came from the joint presence of all the nature spirits, like nymphs, naiads or satyrs.
As he curved around an outcrop, he caught sight of a young girl with fair skin and copper blonde hair, standing in front of the water gloomily, as if she was half considering jumping in and drowning herself. Even from afar, David recognized her eye-catching, dainty features, and decided to approach.

"Hey Bri, long time no see." He smiled, his sharp eyes going over her facial expression. "What's on your mind?"

OOC: He knows who she is because he regularly gets his eyebrows done at the Aphrodite cabin (in exchange for some of their chores). He's also been at camp a fair few years.

Bri looked over her shoulder to see David, one of the Athena kids that sometimes comes around to the Aphrodite Cabin. She talked to him a few times. She didn't talk to him often, but she had more conversations with the blond Athena boy than almost everyone else in camp.
"Nothing. Just Camp is a lot more . . . different than I expected," Bri answered hesitantly, biting her lip. "It's fun and all, but being the daughter of the goddess of love isn't something I would exactly jump up and cheer about."

"What's wrong with love?" David asked. He came to a stop next to her and crossed his arms over his chest. Tanner and taller than last year, he was about a head above Bri in terms of height. His clothes were smart but casual, and he had new scars here and there -- signs that demigod life was not always relaxing.

Bri looked up at the look with a look of exasperation, not at him, just her situation in general. Bri felt shorter than usual standing next to the much bigger boy. He was spiffy, while she was dressed in some muddy skinny jeans and a purple and grey striped long sleeve.
"There is nothing exactly wrong with love, but I'm not a very love-y type of person. I don't care about beauty or clothes or anything a typical child of Aphrodite cares about. I would rather be a daughter of Athena or Nemesis, someone like that. The vain goddess whose gift to me was make-up and a dress? Not the type of mother I was hoping for."

David smiled again. In many ways, Bri reminded him of her sister Piper. The attitude, the clothes, they were doing their best to visibly set themselves apart from their other siblings.
In her defense, he did get it. Being a child of Aphrodite wasn't easy at camp: no one took you seriously, no-one wanted you on their team for war games, and you were always labelled off as a flirty airhead.

"So you would've preferred a war goddess, hm?" He passed a hand through his hair. ".... Quite honestly though, Aphrodite is a sort of war goddess herself. It's not that obvious because her weapons are not as, uh, straightforward, as swords and shields. But look at all the wars she's had a part in, the heroes she's birthed. Like you."

Bri let out a sigh, running her hand through her messy hair.
"Most of the wars she started, through dating two gods are having an affair. Representing war and making was are two very different things," Bri let out a huff and looked at the ground, moving the sand around with her feet.
She looked up at the Athena boy. Of course, a child of the wisdom goddess is bond to be pretty wise and he was older than her, so he probably knew what she was talking about. But in this instance, he had no idea what was going through her head.
"I'm not a hero," She huffed. "I haven't even killed a monster yet, just ran away! I haven't gone on some big quest to save the world and I probably never will because no one is going to take some new kid daughter of Aphrodite on a big quest to retrieve some object or fight some monster. When it comes down to it, I'm going to be one of the demigods who just sits around and does nothing until a dragon swoops down and bites me in half."
Bri let out a deep breath and plopped her butt down in the sand, cradling her head in her hands as her thoughts ran wild through her head.

He chuckled and nodded. "You're not wrong about that. She does have some pretty heroic descendants though. Aeneas, Julius Caesar,..." But then Bri cut him off and he listened to her. She was clearly upset and David made sure not to interrupt her, and gave her a moment once she was done.
Eventually he reached down and touched her shoulder.

"Hey." He sat on the sand next her and spoke softly. "Why do you talk like that about yourself? You're brave, and I've seen you fight. No dragon in their right mind would wanna attack you, trust me."

"I highly doubt a dragon would care if I was brave of now." She joked, but it lacked any form of amusement.
Bri looked back up at the blond boy and asked, honestly confused, "Why did you come talk to me, anyways? You one of the popular guy with a lot of friends and cool siblings. Why share your wisdom?"

"Well, first of all, wisdom is meant to be shared," David put in. "But no, I came to talk to you because I like you and you seemed down. I wanted to know what happened." He gave a smile, dimples appearing in his cheeks and chin. "You know, being a child of Aphrodite has its perks, even if you don't like the title."

Bri raised a slim brow at the boy's optimism. She wasn't use to such . . . happiness when everything seemed so crappy in her opinion. "Oh really?" Bri said mockingly. "And what might those be? And if you say beauty then I will punch you in the throat."

David held up his hands. "You say that as if it's a bad thing. But if you promise to keep your punches in for the next two minutes, I can go on a quick tangent and explain why I think beauty and fashion matter." He gave her a look of, hey, I'm an Athena kid. "You think it's vain," he continued. "You're not wrong about that, but you're not totally right either. Fashion and clothes, people use them to show who they are. Or rather," he said with a crooked little smile, "who they want you to think they are. There's a lot you can find out about a person just by reading their day-to-day clothes."
His eyes swept over the glittering sea and he crossed his legs in the sand. "Fashion helps spreading ideas, and I'm not just talking about slogan tees. Prints, symbols, fabrics, it all has a meaning when you pay enough attention to it." He shot a glance at Bri. "More importantly though, it can help you out. You said it's vain, although, to be quite frank, so is the world we live in. People still judge you on your looks, on your clothes. That's why I usually dress smart casual because I realized people take me more seriously that way. Sure, most of them do that once I've talked to them, but that takes time. Why put myself at a disadvantage? People are shallow. Use that in your favour, daughter of Aphrodite," he smiled.

"Okay, so I'm supposed to trick them using clothes?" Bri asked sarcastically. "That sounds great. But the whole wardrobe thing won't really help me survive a typical demigod life, now will it?"

Bri looked down at the ground for a minute before looking back at the older boy with a form of pity in her blue eyes. "I appreciate you trying to make me feel better, but there isn't much to being a daughter of Aphrodite. Helping people pick out an outfit or putting on make-up won't make me feel like an oh-so-great hero."

David gave a smile. He did want to help her feel better, but he also enjoyed a bit of debate. "You're talking with the son of the weaving goddess." He shrugged, "I find fashion fascinating. It's individuality, culture, movement, architecture all in one." He stayed silent for a moment then listened to her. She was still upset about her parentage, and he started listing things in his mind that might help her cheer up. After all, love was a power to be reckoned with. "Children of Aphrodite don't have to be like that, you know. Look at your sister Piper. Look at Silena. There's much more to it than just being pretty."

"It's not just the people!" Bri said, frustrated with her own thoughts. "Some of my siblings are good people, but it's not . . . easy," Bri decided on. "If I was a daughter of Athena I could walk around without people thinking I was some airhead gossip. Being the daughter of love means everyone expects you to be held up to these stupid standards! Always looking nice and dating people and I don't like that! Even before Camp I was the outsider. I was never posh and fancy enough for the kids at my prep school and when I come here I'm suddenly too posh that everyone thinks I'm some blubbering idiot!"

David looked down, trying not to look like he felt sorry for her. He did feel bad for her, he just didn't want her to mistake it for pity.

"I agree it mustn't be pleasant. Is that why you train so hard in the arena?"

David rested his elbows on his knees. "Did you ever meet your mother?" he asked. After all, demigods sometimes met their parents. It was rare, but with the trips to Olympus twice a year, some of them had a chance at an actual chat.

"Maybe, if you had the occasion to chat with her, your view would change. Aphrodite is not all vanity and heartbreaks," he carefully said. Bri seemed very hellbent on cutting herself as much as possible from her mother. A few years ago, he would have sided with her. But one of her brothers, whom he had once been in love with, had totally changed his mind on the topic of Aphrodite.

It was not a good decision in his mind. Cutting your mother off, simply because ...she's your mother? Because she stands for love? That seemed unnecessary and doomed to bring about bad things. But David decided it was best to let the topic drop for now. Bri seemed very confident in her choice.
"If you want, I can help you with combat," he offered. "That might help people start seeing you differently."
