it seemed that the only thing derek did was eat. he spent an inordinate amount of time at the mess hall, if he wasn't at his personal space in the northern woods. it's because he had a whole table to himself, and no one bothered him. sometimes he had to glare at an overly friendly camper that reeked of unwanted attraction, scare them off. most people, however, naturally avoided him. it was something he was determined to be relieved about.

he was sitting at his table, tuned out to the sounds of socialising at the other end of the mess hall. it was chinese food day, and his tastebuds were in heaven. he had heaped about three servings of chow mein onto his plate, and he wasn't sure he wasn't going to get any more.

she walks in, clad in bits & pieces of armor. an arm still covered in toughened leather, torso concealed by the standard camp half blood chest protection. she's cold, cold to the world as she ignores the silence that lingers for a second as she passes tables.

nix maccio, the girl who has dedicated herself as a soldier. a child-soldier that ignores the world & barely ever bothers to address it formally. a steely look is ingrained in the hollows of her eyes, and she stacks her plate with foods she has no acquired yet.

a quick glance around the mess hall, the blonde has realized how most of the campers occupied the tables. she'd have to make small-talk, and she preferred to stick to her own company.

a brisk step taken, she finds herself in front of a man who sits alone. he seemed to her, fairly uninterested, so she plops her tray and slides into her seat without a word.

nix cares not for conversation, finding it a waste of her time as she starts to shovel the food in front of her to chew on. she pays no heed nor attention to him, merely concerned for her growling stomach.

he glances up as a girl sits in front of him. strangely enough, he doesn't smell attraction or curiosity from her, which is... refreshing, and he's glad. he's not quite sure what to do, though, so he just pretends he doesn't see her. he hunches his shoulders a little more, and finishes off his plate. he discreetly takes another glance at the girl, because he's a little suspicious and a little curious (oh, how the tables have turned). she's wearing mismatched pieces of armour, a bit of tough leather here, a bit of weathered celestial bronze there.

he frowns down at his food again, scraping the last piece of chicken from his plate. he hears some half-bloods at the table next to his snicker about the "two weirdos" (aka derek and this new girl). as he gets up to leave, he smiles widely, toothily at the people, his hazel eyes cold. the boy that had been snickering blanches and makes a ridiculous 'meep' noise, and derek strolls away, hands in his pockets.

no clue as to when she made sitting at the table a habit, though she makes certain to show up precisely. tray flat against the table, nix sits down and stares down the dirt on her table, waiting for the other.

she has no idea of his moniker, no particular clue as to who his parent was. she didn't care, but nix felt she needed to uphold some unspoken code of waiting for him before wolfing down her food.

he posed no questions and neither did she. she is resolute, her emotions a slate. a bloodied bandage is wrapped aroud her right arm, but there is no yelp of pain whilst she sits in stiffening silence.

it's the day of the full moon, and he's burning under and over his skin. he knows he must look demented to many of the campers he passes on his way to the woods. he's stumbling, vision flashing red erratically. when an apollo camper approaches him, pale face twisted in concern, he bares his teeth at her and lets out an involuntary snarl. the camper's face goes bone-white, and she falls backwards. he thinks he knows her--paige? maybe that's her name--but his wolf doesn't care. he growls in warning, fur sprouting, and takes off on a lope towards the woods. he doesn't remember much after that. maybe he chased a couple of satyrs or a dryad, but he knows he didn't hurt anyone.

the first lights of day are breaking through the treetops when he wakes up. it's still dark, but with his enhanced vision, he can see everything relatively perfectly. he's naked because he at least had the sense to strip before he changed fully, and he clumsily puts his clothes back on. he makes his way to his cabin, glad that it's early enough that no one else is out.

the clock murmurs its time, clicking ever so softly, though nix occasionally spares a glance. normally, she didn't show any interest, apathy her resort. she lacks weight in a revelation of her care. a tap of her finger, she tries to squash the agitation that's builidng up in her arms, the tenseness stilling her to a gaze of a hungry lion.

lionhearted may she be, though there is concern for the other, & she still does not eat, refusing to touch the tray, to even dare nip a bite.

tick-tock, the clock sings its brittle tune.
the notion of his disappearance has pitted her stomach, it growling in response to the hour that slowly made its course. nix briefly surveys her surroundings, hoping to spot his face, though its futile. perhaps he grew tired of her, his want to sit at the same table waning, but---it's not like she wished for him to be here. she simply wished not to be bothered, and he was perfect at warding away strangers and questions alike.

she's the sort to get stuck on routine, despite knowing that mishaps do occur---still, she waits, & waits, until she realizes, it is time to leave. so she does, without even scarfing down her tray.

he trips on a shoe on his way to his bed (and no he did not growl at the shoe, thanks very much), and crumples to the ground in exhaustion. he wakes up only when the bright day light streams in through the open window. it feels like he's got a hangover--he can hear everything, smell everything, and it feels like something furry died in his mouth… on that train of thought, he jerks up, scrambling to the bathroom. thank god, there's no blood or gore on his face; he hasn't injured anything during the full moon. and even though he's nauseous, he's still starving. with a glance at the digital clock on his night stand, he realises that it's just about lunch time. he strips off his filthy shirt and grabs a slightly less mucky one that's strewn over his bed. bare-chested, he drags himself outside, pulling his shirt on in the warmth of the sun. he hears a girlish titter from somewhere near him, but ignores it in favour of heading towards the mess hall.

he knows he still has mud and dirt on his face and his arms and his pants, and that he's probably still got twigs and leaves and grass in his hair (he tried shaking them out, but he's not sure it worked), but he doesn't care, because he's already piling food onto his tray. once he's got a satisfactory mountain of food on it, he trudges to his table. The Girl (because in his head she's capitalised) is already sitting there. something unwinds inside of him--he hadn't realised he'd been worried about her until she's in front of him. he idly wonders if she'd worried about him when he was gone, but he quickly shakes the thought away as he sits down in his spot.

she's stiff in tasteless silence, painstakingly focused on her food though it was still left unscathed. palm outstretched on the flats of the table, she's not lost in her own thoughts, she never was, always focused & bright-eyed when it came to her surroundings. a girl bred as a child-soldier, she's painfully aware of the harm that comes from never paying attention. a quiet outtake of breath from frozen lungs, nix's gaze snaps back up to meet the boy in front of her.

honestly, she didn't understand why such a feeling would brew in the midst of her stomach, the idea to query & interrogate the boy. she watched him, never averting her eyes, not even a flavor of embarrassment licking her cheeks nor her innards. she's sharp, and peculiar in her own way. her breath steadies, & a flicker of worry skims her mien.

he's filthy, a mess all over, & normally she was the sort to come in, bandaged, or blood grazing the whites of the fabric she's clad in. it's what training has made her do, to come in sweaty & bare-faced, blood still drying on her kneecaps or hair slightly damp from the morning's chill. her mouth has become taut, though she expresses no other emotion, still ever-resolute. though her eyes slightly, ever so, meet the level of his mouth. she's no good with talk, & it's difficult to even form the words.

he's just started shovelling food into his mouth, when She asks, "where were you?" there's no emotion colouring the words, though he takes a curious whiff--there's a faint hint of anxiety and worry emanating from Her. He's confused as to why She would be concerned, but he conceals the curiosity. She hadn't allowed Herself to show emotion, so he pretended he didn't know.

he pauses, glancing up at Her. Her gaze does not quite meet his eyes, and he looks back down at his food. how does he answer, he wonders as he forces himself to take another bite. it's been longer than it should take to answer Her question. he doesn't look at Her as he says gruffly, voice hoarse from disuse,

"woods."

"--oh." she says quietly, more questions pressing her thoughts though only frosted breath escapes her lungs. still, she's bothered him more then enough, & her fingers curl around the metal handle of her fork, digging into her own food. stare venturing, she steals glances of him, they're subtle, though the gnashing of mild worry has her subconsciously sweep the dirt & scratches that lined him, the filth that he's encroached in.

there's a pregnant pause, before she swallows down a mouthful of food, & with a hushed voice, no quaver just steel lining her timbre.

it's difficult for her to admit this, but her gaze ascends to watch his reply, to see if there would be any emotion tinting his visage. she notes the smile, & her face stays frozen, emotion soiled.

he's surprised to hear Her reply. Her posture is stiff, unyielding, and he recognises it as his own. he takes another sneaky, experimental sniff. he smells tiredness, weariness from somewhere deep inside the blonde. he ducks his gaze back down to his food, which is quickly becoming unappetizing. his eyebrows rise slightly in further surprise when She speaks again, and he looks back up.

a tentative bite of her food, the girl-soldier keeps her gaze focused on the boy before her. nix is callous with her emotions, constantly tiptoeing on whether to allow for her face to show a glimmer of the uncertainty. though hollowness has always pierced her gut, forced her into a black-and-white world, candor starting to accompany her speech.

`i'm nix maccio.`

she says it flatly, studying the curves of his face.

someone less "emotionally stunted" --as eliza liked to call it-- might have said something like "nice to meet you," but derek isn't gifted socially, so he doesn't. he simply nods once, curtly, and stabs at the silly bowtie pasta on his plate. he takes a swig from the goblet that materialises in front of him; it's cherry coke today, which he doesn't particularly like. he grimaces slightly, but keeps his eyes on his food. he thinks he's exhausted his social abilities for one day.

the girl avoids his gaze soon enough ( deeming it unnecessary to stare him down as of now ) , she's cold as ice, like snow on the pavement and its pale gray coloring her a february face. once, wild passion flavored her a girl who danced with untamed fires; ones that roared their displeasure whilst she now stares with a vigilant expression, panged with no remorse. she is painted a thousand colors, a thousand shades of blue forcing her into mercilessness. still, a girlish softness accompanied her---one that's unavoidable despite the pain that has trailed after her, the fact that she's grown & seen far more, done too much, and ached away her heart.
