Kyungsuk, daughter of Nemesis Empty Kyungsuk, daughter of Nemesis

Post by FinnsRainbow 3/10/2021, 3:50 pm

    First name: Kyungsuk

    Name: Seong

    Age: 23

    Gender: female

    Eyes: brown

    Hair: black, cut short

    Height: 5'8 (1m75)

    Body Type: lean

    Skin Color: tan

    Ethnicity: East Asian

God Parent: Nemesis, goddess of vengeance, balance and retribution.

Mortal Parent: Seong Chung-Ae, a Korean heiress who cut ties with her family to became an activist and feminist.

    Country of Origin: South Korea

    Pets: None

    Talents:
    - Fighting with sword and spear
    - Hand to hand combat
    - Calling out bigots and bullies
    - Eating ramen

    Weapon**:
    - A Korean-style celestial bronze sword (진검). She has a standard xiphos too, but she prefers fighting with this one.
    - A bracelet which shoots bullet-like darts. They are filled with a potion that makes someone relive the worst things they ever did to another person ... as the other person. It was a gift from Nemesis in exchange for her hand. The hallucinations are powerful and can be looped - since the potion doesn't leave the body once it's entered - which essentially sticks the person into the illusion for a set amount of time. Whether looped or not, the illusions come back at intervals so the abuser is never fully free. Just like the people they harmed, they keep being affected. In short, the bracelet's magic traps them into a cycle of their own abuse.
They can not be cured by any mortal means - only full, genuine remorse from the person can combat the effects. Demigods can get the effects out by a rigorous diet of nectar and ambrosia (although I would like to specify that Kyungsuk has never used this bracelet against demigods and doesn't plan to. Unless she finds a demigod that has done particularly horrendous things)
    - A robotic hand, courtesy of Sawyer from the Hephaestus cabin (Morgan Landry's character). The hand has two settings: celestial bronze and mortal steel.

    Personality:
    - Unapologetic
    - Remorseless
    - Decisive
    - Fair
    - Caring and compassionate
    - Articulate and well-spoken

Flaws: unnecessarily savage, believes her judgement is above anyone else's, likes provoking people

Abilities (must relate to god parent; optional):
    - She can sense when someone has an unresolved grudge, feels vengeful and/or wants to achieve justice
    - Her demigod dreams usually revolve around real life injustices that happen in the present or happened in the past
    - She can feel if someone in her presence has done something particularly bad. It's like a background noise. She describes it as "the worst kind of ASMR". (She doesn't always understand what it is, but when she has identified one type of "noise" she can usually recognize it again. For example, she's very good at recognizing the "noise" of domestic violence.)

Powers (must relate to god parent; optional):
    - She can make someone relive something they did to someone else, from the perspective of the other person. She needs to make physical contact for it, though when she focuses (or when she's very angry) she can do it with a look. It lasts 1 post, needs 2 posts to recharge. The person experiences it as a sort of lucid dream, with physical hallucinations.
    - She can dole out karma. If someone just did or said something gross, degrading, bigoted etc, she can cast a karma spell on them that'll tear them down a little bit (ie being refused a job or getting publicly humiliated). It lasts 1 post, needs 3 to recharge. It works with negative-to-positive stuff as well.
    - Shadow traveling. She can shadow travel a maximum of 100 miles, though can do 200 if she's really concentrating. She gets really exhausted afterwards and needs a nap. 3 posts to recharge.

    Life Before Camp*:
Kyungsuk was born in Daegu, SK. After Nemesis gave birth to her, she appeared in a cradle in her mortal mother's flat along with a letter in which Nemesis claimed her and gave directions to Camp Half-Blood in the case of emergency.
Chung-Ae raised her daughter far away from the USA, where she knew her life would be in danger. However, she didn't neglect Kyungsuk's martial arts training. As soon as she could walk, she signed her up to TaeKwon-Do, Geom Sul, Geom Do, and self-defense classes. Kyungsuk progressed fast and had a real knack for sword fighting.
Throughout her childhood, Chung-Ae made sure to teach her the myths and legends of Ancient Greece. Kyungsuk was fascinated. She knew the names of the gods by heart and loved browsing through pictures of statues and temples.
Chung-Ae's outspoken stance on feminism and feminist activism had a huge influence on Kyungsuk's development. She accompanied her mother to marches and conferences, helped her make signs, listened to her speak about the pervasive aspects of sexism and misogyny in their culture. Their house was always full of women who needed refuge, advice, or just a place to stay for one night. Kyungsuk learned to engage in activism in a dual way: first through supporting women, and second through protesting injustices.
Her powers started manifesting around ages 9 or 10. Chung-Ae, who did not know how to help her harness them but wanted her to get adequate help, decided to send her to Camp Half-Blood.
She flew with her to New York and drove her to Camp herself. Because Kyungsuk was not 13 yet, she didn't smell that much to monsters and got to Camp safely. Upon arrival, she was put in the Hermes cabin along with the other "minor" demigods and unclaimed. From then on, she bunked in Camp Half-Blood every summer, trained assidiously, and made a few friends.
But with each passing year, her powers and abilities grew. Soon she wasn't able to stop feeling the presence of all the injustices around her, which ranged from benign to fully criminal. Every waking moment was a splitting headache, a growing agony of not being able to intervene.
One day, she snapped. There was a couple next door, the man was verbally and physically abusing his wife. Had been for as long as she could remember. For years, she had heard the "noise" grow and grow, seeping through the walls.  She'd had enough.
She knocked on the door - the moment the man opened, she grabbed his wrist and poured all her anger into it. She made him relive what he had done to his wife that day, blow for blow, word for word, degradation for degradation. She could feel him wincing and shivering, but did not let go. The whole thing lasted about a minute. In terms of what he'd done to his wife, it was really the tip of the iceberg, but she could see how shaken up he was. Better even… inflicting onto him a fraction of what he had been inflicting on someone else seemed to free her slightly from the burden of feeling injustices around her. She felt a little bit lighter.
And from then on, she knew what to do.
She started skipping classes to follow "trails of noise". She went after people, stalking, knocking on doors or showing up at their work places. Made them relive some of the things they'd done. She always went after the "loudest noise" aka the worse forms of injustice and abuse she could feel. She drove herself to exhaustion by using her powers continuously like that.
But no matter how bold she grew, it only gave her temporary respite. The awareness of injustices still buzzed in the back of her head, along with the knowledge that - even with her powers - there was no way she would be able to give out actual justice. How could she? The illusions barely lasted more than a few minutes! The people usually ended up writing them off as bad dreams and carried on with business as usual. Kyungsuk grew frustrated and demotivated. Every day she heard about the shit that happened in her country - molka, the Nth Room, violence against women, s*xual exploitation, femicide.... How could she possibly tackle this?
She knew she couldn't do it alone.

So she sought out the help of her mother Nemesis.
Kyungsuk prayed to her day after day. At home, she had made her own altar and sacrificed food to her daily, sang hymns, and burned papers with prayers written in ancient Greek.
And then, one day - on her way back from school - Nemesis appeared to her. It was in a side alley. Kyungsuk remembered her as a tall woman riding a motorbike with broken wheels.

"So you want to make a difference?" she asked.

Kyungsuk didn't flinch under her godly gaze. "I want retribution. I want the power to inflict on all these 미친놈들 the effects of their own horrors, for good. It is the only justice I can think of."

Nemesis smiled. "And what would you give to achieve that?"

    "Anything."

"I will only take your hand."

And she did. It was the most painful experience in Kyungsuk's entire existence. To this day, she still experiences trauma, flashbacks and phantom pains. She still sees herself walking into the hospital, bleeding all over the floor.
But in exchange, she had a gift. A bracelet loaded with darts that had the same power as her, times 10. A gift with which she had an actual chance of achieving justice. It was well worth a hand.
Back at Camp, her friend Sawyer fashioned her a robotic hand which can turn into different weapons (nothing out of the demigod ordinary, no guns or nukes).

    Any notes about your characters:
    - Both the god parent gift and the special weapon were approved by Morgan. (I won the god parent gift at the solstice and the weapon in a mystery box)

    - Something I didn't mention is that the justice system in South Korea is really crappy. It is very common for s*x offenders - even those with p*do offenses - to get less than 2 years of prison despite having abused a significant number of women and children. These are the kinds of people Kyungsuk goes after first and foremost.

    - I also didn't mention that she's part of the 탈주 코르셋 - Escape The Corset movement, a South Korean feminist movement that rejects beauty standards by destroying make-up, going barefaced, cutting their hair short and wearing practical clothes.  (If you know anything about SK you know that beauty is so valued that it is expected of people to get cosmetic surgeries. Oh, and the beauty standard for women is a 10 yr old s*x doll). There is more to the movement, like the rejection of female socialization, feminine standards, p*rn, marriage, etc, and it's a very big part of her life. She avidly reads up on feminist books, theory, and testimonies and has been accompanying her mother and friends to marches since she was a child. It is in these marches, protesting misogyny and injustices, that she has felt the most whole. Kyungsuk prioritizes women in all aspects of her life and doesn't care if anyone calls her a misandrist.

Hey! Love the form, just one question. You say her mother is an heiress, what's her family's business?

Her family owns a luxury hotel chain. Think, something like the Korean equivalent of the Ritz Carlton LLC. After cutting ties with them she still had a buttload of cash (enough for several lifetimes), which she uses to build safehouses for women across Korea, finance activism campaigns and take care of her and her daughter.
