Chiron was standing at the start line, the conch in hand, as the two chariots rolled in, each pulled by two horses. He recognized Malecai and Victoria for the Athena and Leila and Petra for the Other Gods.
"You know the rules," he said, stepping forward. "Two rounds, the first chariot to cross this line the second time wins. Weapons and dirty tricks are allowed. As far as possible, please try not to kill anyone."
Victoria was the driver of the Athena chariot. The reins wrapped around her arms, she made the horses walk forward for some moments then stopped them at the starting line. Her vision was impaired by her helmet, the reins's leather irritated her skin, but that was all. She was wearing celestial bronze arm greaves, protective gloves, her Harvard sweatshirt (which made her back sweat because of the otherwise high temperature), olive shorts with leg greaves and hiking boots with her boot knife in the right one. She also had a falx, the curved knife charioteers used to cut the reins if needed (security measure), but that was the only close-to-hand weapon she had.
The Athena chariot was sleek and gray. The wood was carved and painted at the front with an owl and at the sides with stylized olive branches, but despite its simple appearance it included a number of inventive tricks the whole cabin had worked on. It was pulled by two dapple gray Quarter horses and had reinforced wheels, just in case the other cabin pulled a trick of that sort. With the Other Gods cabin, you never quite knew what to expect because of all the different demigods and their areas of expertise, but Victoria knew Leila and Petra. Petra was the daughter of Harmonia and Leila the child of Epione, harmony and soothing of pain. She didn't know what they had included in their chariot, but she didn't underestimate them just because their god parents weren't combat/invention deities.
She looked at Malecai over her shoulder, nodded at him, then looked at the track. It was a quarter-mile in length with two poles around which you had to turn; after having trained every day here, she knew the ground by heart.
Chiron blew the conch and the race began.
