    Chariot race Empty Chariot race

    Chariot race Chariot_Race_Ben-Hur

Chiron was standing at the start line, the conch in hand, as the two chariots rolled in, each pulled by two horses. He recognized Malecai and Victoria for the Athena and Leila and Petra for the Other Gods.

"You know the rules," he said, stepping forward. "Two rounds, the first chariot to cross this line the second time wins. Weapons and dirty tricks are allowed. As far as possible, please try not to kill anyone."

Victoria was the driver of the Athena chariot. The reins wrapped around her arms, she made the horses walk forward for some moments then stopped them at the starting line. Her vision was impaired by her helmet, the reins's leather irritated her skin, but that was all. She was wearing celestial bronze arm greaves, protective gloves, her Harvard sweatshirt (which made her back sweat because of the otherwise high temperature), olive shorts with leg greaves and hiking boots with her boot knife in the right one. She also had a falx, the curved knife charioteers used to cut the reins if needed (security measure), but that was the only close-to-hand weapon she had.
The Athena chariot was sleek and gray. The wood was carved and painted at the front with an owl and at the sides with stylized olive branches, but despite its simple appearance it included a number of inventive tricks the whole cabin had worked on. It was pulled by two dapple gray Quarter horses and had reinforced wheels, just in case the other cabin pulled a trick of that sort. With the Other Gods cabin, you never quite knew what to expect because of all the different demigods and their areas of expertise, but Victoria knew Leila and Petra. Petra was the daughter of Harmonia and Leila the child of Epione, harmony and soothing of pain. She didn't know what they had included in their chariot, but she didn't underestimate them just because their god parents weren't combat/invention deities.

She looked at Malecai over her shoulder, nodded at him, then looked at the track. It was a quarter-mile in length with two poles around which you had to turn; after having trained every day here, she knew the ground by heart.

Chiron blew the conch and the race began.

Leila was ectastic. She just loved competition and chariot racing was one of the most competitive. Or at least, that's what she thought. She was bouncing on the tips of her toes as she stood inside the chariot, the reins securely wrapped around her arms. She and Petra had already decided that she'd be the driver and honestly she was fine with that despite her competitive craze wanting her to fight instead. If she was the fighter and got too into it she'd most likely fall off the chariot and even her armor wouldn't help cushion the fall. It was the standard CB armor that laid around camp and the helmet fit snugly against her head. Thankfully she had put her hair in a braid earlier so that it wouldn't be flying around or sticking to her face later on. She wore black leggings and a thin grey long sleeve underneath her chest armor, nothing too warm that might make her sweat later on.
She gave the reins a quick jerk that had the two horses in front begin walking up to the starting line. They were sleek and beautiful if she did say so herself with a chestnut coat and a silky black mane. The Other Gods chariot weren't really designed for one theme since there was so many other gods but every camper had inputted something on there to represent their godly parent. The chariot itself was built of sleek brown wood and the plane was small but large enough for two grown men to stand side by side on. They had some tricks under their sleeve and the wheels had been reinforced for protection but even through that it was good to rely on your own weapon. She had her o katana unsheathed as it hung from her waist so if needed she could do a little fighting of her own if worse came to worse or provide Petra a weapon if hers fell or something though she doubted that. Leila looked over to her right to see the two children of Athena that were their competitors. Victoria and Malecai, yes she'd heard about them, might've even spoken to them once who knows? She always admired children of Athena for their intellect and quick thinking but in competition it was best to be wary of them. She glanced back to Petra and gave the girl an encouraging smile, eyes focused back on the track with her hands gripping the reigns as Chiron blew the horn that signaled the race.

Victoria made a sharp flick roll down the reins and the horses galloped forward. The sand was smooth, but it didn't hide the occasional stone or stick, so every now and again, the chariot would give a flinch or an unexpected hop. Victoria focused on the pole at the other end of the track; the goal was to be as close as possible to the small wall linking the two poles to ride the smallest distance possible. In the stadium, she could hear cheering and booing, but shut the noise out, concentrating on making the horses race as fast as they could. Their ears were laid back flat on their heads, their mane flying behind them. Their hooves made a thunderous noise on the ground.

Petra stood up in the back of the chariot, behind her fellow charioteer. She looked at her selection of swords, javelins, nets and random devices. She picked up a longer javelin as the horses galloped forward and Chiron blew his horn.

Both chariots were racing along the track. The cheering in the stadium grew louder. Victoria looked over her shoulder at Petra and Leila, and urged her horses to go faster. They could win this.

The first pole came into range. Victoria shortened the reins, flicking them to keep the horses at their full speed, then yanked them to the left to make them race around the pole and finish the first round. The chariot of the Other Gods was right behind them.

OOC: I'm randomizing to see which chariot is ahead of the other, right now, it's the Athena chariot.

BIC: Victoria decided it was time. She had her Harvard shirt on backwards, so the hoodie was on her chest; she made it turn into the replica of the Aegis breastplate her mother had given her, Medusa's bronze eyes looking straight at the horses and charioteers behind them.

    OOC: Dirty tricks allowed :p

As the aegis unfolded in front of Petra's eyes, she winced and looked away as medusa's bronze eyes stared her down. She regained confidence and looked back at her weapons. She picked up a net and quickly wrapped it around four spears. The spears were tied tithe corners of the net, and if they all hit the ground thy could knock the driver off. In case this didn't work, Petra poured Greek fire onto the net and chucked it towards the other chariot.

Victoria did an in extremis maneuver to avoid the spears and net, but two spears stuck themselves into the side of the chariot, greek fire in liquid state gleaming dangerously on the net threads.

"Cut that thing off!!" Victoria cried to Malecai, who drew his sword and cut through the spears neatly, leaving only the celestial bronze hears buried in the chariot's flank. The net went behind them but exploded in a green cloud the moment it touched the ground, flinging the chariot forward. It rolled on one wheel for a couple of meters before Victoria managed to get the other wheel to touch the ground again. They reached the other pole and turned sharply, the horses all fidgety and stressed because of the explosion. The Other Gods chariot was in front of them now but Victoria was determined to catch up, Malecai clicked a button in the foldable control panel, and a net sprung out of their wheel, wrapping itself around the Other Gods left chariot wheel. It wouldn't cause much damage but might destabilize the chariot, just enough for Malecai and her to catch up. This was the last round, they couldn't mess up.

Petra picked up a bow and some dull tipped arrows from the chariot. She knocked an arrow and let it fly, aiming for the other driver's back.

    OOC: Indeed ^^

BIC: Victoria caught up. They were side to side now with the Other Gods chariot, the pole coming into sight again. She heard a metallic thud as Malecai uttered a pained grunt and dared a look over her shoulder, seeing Petra aiming dulled arrows at them. One landed on Victoria's forearm, which made her hiss in pain. Malecai took one of the spears and attacked Petra with it while they were still next to each other, the bladed point of their chariot's wheels scraping with a screech against the Other Gods chariot.

Petra grinned and laughed maniacally as she heard the scraping. "That all you got?" She yelled over the wind and picked up a few Greek fire jars. She threw them at the wheels, the driver, the attacker, the horses, the reins, everything in sight. Then she blew a raspberry wiggled her fingers at them!

OOC: Um, a bit of an overkill there. If I had had time to post I would've asked you to edit because if I had allowed it, all of our characters would be dead (powerplaying). The two chariots would have been blown to shreds because they were so close together, and well, throwing Greek fire at people or horses isn't that good for their life expectancy.

Anyhow, I randomized the winner. The Athena cabin won the race. Seeing MoonMoon dropped out though, I can't give her the prize, so the drachmas for the winner go to the two of you. Kayla, you RPed very well without any type of powerplaying so you get 200 drachmas. Rov, that last bit with the Greek fire which would have killed all of our characters will cost you 50 drachmas. You get 150.
