Signs of the Forgotten Empty Signs of the Forgotten

As the forest burned behind him, Phylios ran as if Hades himself was behind him. In his eyes, it was probably much worse. He stumbled and fell to the floor, his foot caught in a root. He inadvertently looked back at his pursuer and screamed. And then, everything was dead silent.

"I'm cursed!" Thorn thought, for the hundredth time that day. It seemed that wherever the young Ranger went, "monsters" appeared; everyone he met was scared away by the sudden appearance of a "monster". For all his life he had lived among his self-made apparitions and he was getting really sick of them. He concentrated and forced the "Furies" and "gryphons' to disappear back into whatever twisted place they came from and sat quietly in his tree. With an experienced eye, he scanned the forest for even the tiniest signs of a possible prey. His eyes shot to the left as he saw a bush shake in his peripheral vision. He quietly drew his bow and fit an arrow onto the string as he waited for something to shoot at. The bush rattled and shook and Thorn almost fell out of his perch in the tree when a giant crab rose from the ground under the bush. It was as long as a tree is tall and its amber shell seemed near impenetrable. The Ranger hurriedly put the arrow back in its quiver, threw his bow across his shoulders and climbed down the tree, just as easily as if he were putting his shoes on and walking out the door. He stealthily crept as far away from the giant crab as he could. Unfortunately for him, his concentration was so focused on the beast that he failed to notice the trio of kids in bronze armor right behind him. He bumped into the leader who sputtered in anger. "Hey freak! Watch where you're going!" He angrily drew his sword as Thorn tried his best to shut him up. But it was too late. The crab turned and its tiny eyes squinted as it noticed three kids ... No, four. The one with the massive bow seemed to melt in and out of the surrounding foliage. The crab's mildly-intelligent mind gave its body a single order. Attack.
