I finish off my bolognaise, and then go to drink the rest of my lemonade, only to realise I had already drunk it all. I sighed, but then refilled it. It was so much easier with magical cups... I drank the lemonade and then looked back to Maelstrom. She was looking all over the place, everywhere but me, she seemed to be afraid of my answer, or something else. I still couldn't grasp why she wouldn't be happy though.
Maelstrom's eyes finally settle on looking down at her shoes. Selena seemed sort of amazed that she could control vines. Well, it actually was, but Maelstrom's were very small and brittle, no matter how hard she tried. Kids would make fun of her for practicing, so she had stopped trying. That was a couple weeks ago as well, so her powers were probably even weaker than before. Maelstrom could use her powers to an extent, but Selena's powers . . . she could do so many different things with them. The girl decides not to lie to Selena about why she hated her powers. That only made the friends more distant.
'My powers suck. I can hardly even make a vine that can support itself. The tendrils are weak and brittle. I used to get made fun of for practicing it, so I stopped trying to make them bigger and stronger. It doesn't help that it is winter time now. It seems to be that when its cold, my powers are halved. It's some stupid way of me sharing my mother's pain. Maelstrom confesses, then takes the finishing bite of her cheese pizza. Why couldn't she have cool powers? Why did she have to have seasonal powers? It was so dumb. The girl manages to lift her eyes up to meet Selena's gaze. She was expecting her to be scowling, but instead she was smiling. How could someone be so upbeat about everything? She never seemed to get sad or anything. Maybe Maelstrom could learn a few things from her.

She really was upset about her powers, and yeah I understood that it sucked at times because she could only use them seasonally, but still, it was better than no powers at all, and so I tried to explain it all to her.
"I don't know about your powers, but for me, I've noticed my powers work best when my mind is clear. Maybe it is the same with you, before today, people have cruelly been pushing around, and it's gotten to you, maybe that was the problem. You let other people judge you badly, and you felt sad inside, so in turn your powers were weak. Like when you said people mocked you, that was why they were weak. If you just cleared your mind, thought happy thoughts, and focused on the vine, and not what anyone else thought, maybe then they would be stronger. And it's not stupid pain, it means you are closer to your mum. If your powers are tied to your mum that closely, then there is a bond between the two of you, that's a good thing!" I tell her all this in the hopes of cheering her up. I was being completely honest, and I said it all in a friendly way, I still saw no reason to be mean around her, she was really nice. Why other people couldn't see that, was beyond me.
