A new beginning

I was up earlier than usual this morning, pumped to play the Halo 5 beta once more. I liked the new mode in Phase 2, Breakout, so I loaded it up. I found a match within two minutes. Then it showed my Spartan, with a Recon helmet and Mark VI Scarred body plate. It also showed my teammates preparing to fight alongside me. Then the opening running start happened, and I leaped into the fray. I then found the Assault Rifle and picked it up. I managed to get one kill with it before retreating. I couldn't afford to be killed early, there was no respawn.

I nearly bit the dust when I ran into an enemy with the standard SMG, but my Battle Rifle teammate shot once so I could instantly melee to finish the kill. It was three vs two in our favor now. Another showed up, but I filled him with lead quickly. Then one of my teammates suddenly went down, and I heard Batlle Rifle fire. I muttered, "Damn, missed the most dangerous one." I sprinted, then slid into cover. My teammate with the BR spotted the last enemy, and managed to stick the three necessary shots. I was pretty happy with the results, but that was just one round. Time to move to the next one.

While walking around at camp, I saw a building I had never been into before. There was light through the window that meant someone was inside. So I decided to go check it out. Upon walking inside, I saw a familiar figure sitting in front of a huge screen, hunched over a controler. I squealed and ran towards him, jumping on his back and enveloping him in a tight hug."Nico!"I laughed and squeezed him tighter.

I recognized who it was immediately, "Sapphire!" Unfortunately, the second round had started, and I could barely control my Spartan. I said, "I'm so sorry, Sapphire, but can you please just sit next to me? I'm in the middle of a game."

I said, "These guys in armor are really only virtual 3D models that we as players control. Our goal in this mode, Breakout, is to eliminate the enemies. Unfortunately, their goal is the same. But this thing is a simulation, so no one actually dies. I then heard a grenade, and used my thrusters to get away. I tossed a grenade of my own and miraculously got someone, and heard the announcer announce a medal, "Hail Mary." I was pretty damn pleased with that throw.

My Battle Rifle teammate went down, so I took his BR and started firing the triple burst precision weapon at one of the last two enemies. I landed three shots, the third being to the head, before receiving AR fire. I used my thruster, pulled out my SMG, and outgunned him for another victory. Then I said, "My team won round 2, but we need to win three more times."

I said, "Thank you, Sapphire," before the four Spartans jumped into the arena once more. This time, I got the Assault Rifle. I went to the left, into the house, and immediately saw two guys armed with SMG's. I threw a grenade, got a double kill, and the medal Cluster Luck. Then a third came in, so I used thrusters to get closer for the melee. He landed a few shots with his AR, so after taking him down, I took cover so my health could regenerate. Once it did, I stormed the BR guy's nest and assassinated him. The animation that played was my Spartan grabbing him by the helmet, and slitting his throat with the knife in the forearm compartment of my armor. The round ended with another victory.

As I observed the game, my eyes slowly closed as I drifted off to a state of being half-asleep. I forced my eyes to open though, since I didn't want to seem rude

In the fourth round I ran in...to be greeted by a surprise grenade and killed. I turned to Sapphire, "Well, I'm down and out for this round, we can talk for a bit."

I decided to get straight to my point that had been on my mind, rather than dwell on her obvious disinterest in Halo. I said, "Sapphire, you know I enjoy your company, and always will, but I'm worried about Alucard. If you hadn't told him to put his dagger away last night, I think he would have killed me without a second thought. I'm worried about my own safety as long as he's around. I talked to my friend Kyle about this problem. Kyle is a highly trained assassin, and he will protect me if Alucard tries to kill me."

I then showed her the earpiece I had. I said, "This is a radio I can use to call Kyle if Alucard tries to kill me. Alucard hates me, make no mistake, and I have a feeling he won't hesitate to use lethal force. I need to have backup, just in case. I hope it won't come down to a fight to the death, and I won't do anything to him, but he may try to kill me, and I'll have to defend myself. Please don't take this the wrong way. If Alucard doesn't threaten me again, I'll call Kyle off, I promise. And you're such a sweet girl, I'll do a lot to try to keep you happy. But Alucard is dangerous, and obviously hates me."

I laughed and reached up to ruffle his hair."You're overeacting. Alucard is a kitten. The claws are only decorative. Nothing will happen, he's harmless!"

I said, "Yeah? Well, blades kill people. He's no kitten. And unlike this game, there is no respawn, you die! I don't feel like dying by his hand. He could do it. He's a lot stronger than I am, and could easily kill me in a fight. So I have backup. But think on this. If Alucard tries to kill me, Kyle will likely try to kill Alucard unless I say otherwise. If Alucard fights back, Kyle won't hesitate either. I don't want to do that, I really don't, but Alucard is quite capable of killing me."

I replied, "Al doesn't get it. He doesn't realize he is being overprotective, and he sees you as an incompetent child. Don't believe me? He doesn't believe you have the power to even make a good decision! He thinks I'm a manipulative liar, and I only care about myself, or want to hurt you. You don't believe him, and rightly so." With that I kissed her on the cheek. I continued, "I would never hurt you, Sapphire. Never in all my years would I ever hurt you. I care about you so much. You matter to me, more than I think you even know. I don't want to hurt Ally, I just want to stay alive. Unfortunately, if he gets violent toward me, I'll...no, Kyle, will have to hurt him."

I replied, "Give it your best. I don't want to hurt him. If I had a choice, I'd want him to stop being so threatening. I just want to live, Sapphire, I want to live. I don't mean to be rude, but if it comes down to hurting him, it will only be if he tries to kill me. He will only get hurt if he tries to hurt me. I promise you." I kissed her on the cheek again, and stroked her face a little bit.

I replied, "I can't speak about your past with him, but I can say this. I think at this point he may just want you all to himself. He considers a boyfriend dangerous! I think it's because his care has become obsession. He is obsessed with trying to protect you, to the extent that he would kill innocent people for trying to approach you because you're absolutely beautiful. That is a sure sign of obsession. It is nice to care about people, but Al takes it way too far."

"He's not obsessed! He killed his first monster at the age of 9 for me. And there have been incidents with campers where, if it wasn't for him, Zeus knows where I would be. He is not obsessed with me, he just wishes to ensure my safety, that's all"

I replied, "I don't mean back then, I mean right now. Obsession takes time, and it could very well be that an obsession started only week, maybe even a few days, before now. But my intelligent friend Jack has given me a lot of insight into human behavior. If I've ever seen the signs of obsession that he identifies extremely well, it's with Al. But it never forms instantly."
