Dino walked into a certain part of the lake, followed by his large black dog, that moved so silent and taciturn that could be seen for a shadow. It was a starless night, which almost absolut darkness was stained by the shining bonfire, right in the middle of the circular cleaning where the demigod had arrived. The weather was cooling down quickly, and Dino regret not having brought gloves. His hands already felt as if they were an ice sculpture. He sat on a hollow trunk next to the fire and tried to warm his hands. He took his headphones out so he could hear the sounds of nature: the low crackling from the fire slowly burning the wood and the melancholic peep of an owl somewhere behind him. It seemed like him and his pet were the only living souls in there. That was somewhat unusual, but no one wanted to sit around the fire and sing happy songs on a sinister night such as that one.
Dino almost enjoyed the loneliness, filled by silence. The only problem was that that place made his mind burst with overthinking. A few days before, his father had called him, asking all friendly if he wanted to come back home for the holidays. Apparently, he and Dino's sister missed him a lot. He quickly denied it, and later, he questioned his actions as he always did. The last time he traveled back to Italy, his homeland, and reunited with his small mortal family, his dad treated him with the same cold indifference as always. And his little sister seemed to be doing way better without him. After all, he attracted trouble wherever he went, and that was the reason why he asked his sister to leave CHB: to protect who he loved the most. Why did the right thing feel so wrong? He liked being alone, not lonely. But he convinced himself that was the only way.
He was thrown back into reality when his dog touched his knee and whined, asking for a pet. He sighed and stroked the soft fur, immediately feeling a bit better. He stared intensely at the bonfire, still thoughtful, and without realizing it, his concentration made the flames become fluorescent purple. The color reflected on the silhouette of the trees and on his own dark eyes, provoking a mysterious effect that he enjoyed. Now intentionally, he made the tone change into green, then into red, then into electric blue. His inner child still liked to play with his powers and entertain himself when nobody was looking. That calmed down his unstable temper and relaxed his muscles.
