Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Winston Edmund Matthews III
Name:
Winston Edmund Matthews III is named after his father, and his father before him. Winston’s family is big into legacy and honor, so it is important to them for their sons to be named after them, as long as they have earned the honor. Winston’s grandfather was named after 2 men that his great-grandfather fought with during World War II, who he saw die. Winston has earned the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel at the military school he attends in upstate California.

Winston is a cis male.
Mortal Parent:
Winston’s dad is Winston Edmund Matthews Jr. Mr. Matthews was a commanding General in the United States Army. He died in combat in 2012, when Winston was 14. Mr. Matthews taught Winston everything that he knows and made Winston into the young adult he is today. Mr. Matthews is from Grand Rapids, Michigan originally, but has travelled a lot as a member of the United States Army, as well as the son of a member. He always insisted on taking Winston to see Michigan and all its beauty every time that they got a vacation.
God Parent:
Winston’s mom is Victoria, Roman goddess of victory.
Date of Birth:
Winston was born on August 7th, 1998, so he is 17, almost 18, years old. He was born right before his Dad left for his second tour of active duty, leaving Winston with his Aunt Monica for his first year of life. From there on out, Winston travelled with his Dad whenever he moved around, until he was 13.
Place of Birth:
Winston was born on an army base in Helena, Montana. They didn’t live there for more than 2 weeks before Winston’s dad was deployed and Winston was sent to live with his Aunt Monica in Missoula, Montana. That is one of the places that Winston lived the long in his life. He lived there from the time he was 2 weeks old to 25 months, and then again when he was 12 and 13.
Hometown/ Last Residence:
Winston didn’t live anywhere for more than two years until he was 14 and his dad was stationed at US Army Post Yerba Buena Island in California. This meant that Winston could settle down and start attending school at Oakland Military Institute in Oakland, California. Winston has been studying there for 3 full years now, and is the closest thing to a home that Winston had ever had.
Race/ Ethnicity:
Winston is Caucasian. He is of Irish, German, and Roman (duh) decent. Even though he knows of his decent, Winston considers himself a true American. His dad’s family has been in America almost as far back as they can trace, but anytime that they get asked about where they are from, they answer America without batting an eye.
Accent:
Winston’s accent is a weird conglomeration of different accents. He lived in so many different places that his collected accents generally average into a General American accent that is predominant through much of middle-class America. If you listen to it more closely, though, his accent differs between words, depending on their complexity. A lot of simple words that he learned earlier in life are in a Western American Accent. More complex and specific words are in Southwestern American English. No matter what language the words come out in, though, Winston tends to talk in a kind of posh and serious tone, like many military people.
Skin Tone:
Winston’s skin tone is somewhere on the border between light and medium Caucasian. His natural skin is pretty light, but he spends an impressive amount of time outside, year round.
Eye Color:
Winston has green eyes, but sometimes they appear bluer when he gets migraines, which happens an unfortunate amount.
Hair Color:
Winston has a generic, middle of the spectrum, blond hair. When Winston was born his hair was dark brown, but it has been getting progressively lighter as he gets older.
Height:
Winston is decently tall, currently about 6’3’’. He still has a bit more growing to do, though, and will probably top out around 6’5’’. Winston like being tall, because it tends to command respect.
Weight:
Winston’s weight tends to fall right at the top of the healthy range for his height, usually staying right around 215 lbs.
Body Type:
Winston’s body is athletically toned and muscular, but he had to work very hard to get it there. Winston’s body was decently scrawny, but he built it up over his time at The Academy, and is now very proud of how far he came.
Appearance:
Winston, much to his dismay, is allergic to most contact brands and solutions, so he is forced to wear glasses to correct his deplorable vision. Winston has a large scar on the back of his neck from an incident when his little sister, Elizabeth, got a hold of a knife. Winston works very hard to stand straight and tall, but can sometimes be caught slouching. Some of Winston's most other distinct features are the scars on his left ear and right arm. When people see Winston, the first thing they notice is that he is tall. The other thing that they notice is his stern demeanor.
Weapon:
Winston’s weapon of choice while at Camp is a bow and arrow, with Imperial Gold arrow heads. He named his bow Lee and it is painted an army green color, much like a lot of the things that he owns.
Armor:
Winston’s armor is very plain and generic, since he doesn’t spend too much time fighting at camp, if it all possible. He painted his armor to match his bow.
Pet:
Winston doesn’t have any pets, not seeing them as very practical.
Talents/ Skills:
>> Winston is a very quick learner. He developed this from all of his military work and training, which involves really learning to be able to think on your feet.
>> Winston has a knack for music. He really enjoys playing ukulele and singing with Lizzy.
>> Winston is very good at keeping himself and his emotions in check. He has trained himself to now show emotions. He is good at covering up fear.
>> Winston tells killer puns.
Flaws:
>> While it may be seen as a skill to keep emotions in check, it is also kind of a flaw. He is very bad at expressing himself and how he feels. This makes it difficult to empathize with people or to get people to empathize with him.
>> Winston is madly afraid of heights. When Winston was young, he almost fell down the side of a mountain in West Virginia, and he has been terrified ever since.
>> Winston has terrible social anxiety. He is terrified of large groups.
>> Winston is very self-conscious. He thinks very lowly of himself, probably, at least in part, because he never had any real life friends.
>> Winston has poor eyesight. He can basically not see without his glasses, and he can’t even wear contacts.
>>Winston gets really bad migraines.
>>Winston has a few scars on his body that bother him a lot. His left ear is almost entirely scarred up from an accident with a firework when she was little. His right arm is covered in little scars from when he fell into a cactus on a hike of the Grand Canyon. Winston also has a scar on the back of his neck. He is embarrassed by his scars because they didn't happen in an honorable way and makes him look weak.
Strengths:
>> Despite not having much reason to, Winston has an unrivaled gift for hope. No matter what is happening, he has hope that it will go alright in the end.
>> Winston hands out compliments like it is no one’s business. He isn’t complimented often, but he wants to make people as happy as he is when someone does.
Weaknesses:
>> Winston has a tough time making friends. After almost 18 years of only having a couple of friends, one of which being his sister, he’s not even sure he wants friends. To him, it is easier to be alone.
>> Winston isn’t very athletic. He doesn’t see a point in organized sports.
Likes:
Winston likes archery, strategy, and music. Even though music is one of his favorite things in the world, he kind of pushes that part of him down. His favorite food is corn bread, and his favorite band is The Mountain Goats. Winston’s favorite color is green and he likes mountains.
Dislikes:
Winston dislikes large groups and emotions. His least favorite food is quinoa and he doesn’t like rap music. His least favorite color is orange, and he hates snow.
Fears:
Winston is more or less a big ball of fears, but he covers it up well. He is afraid of pretty girls and heights, as well as large groups and dogs. In most things, Winston can find something to be afraid of, but his military training has helped him learn how to work despite his fears.
Personality:
Winston is kind of quirky. He loves telling puns, and laughs at his own jokes. Puns are the A1 way to get him out of his shell. Otherwise, he is stern and formal, very military-like. If Winston had to describe himself, he would say “a military meal with a side of puns.” Winston's largest personality flaw is that when he is fully in control of himself, he has no personality. He is firm and proper, and doesn't make a great person to hold a conversation with. Winston is introverted. Winston has a tendency to be unnecessarily sarcastic.
Abilities:
Winston has a knack for guessing the winner of events. He can be wrong, of course, but most times he just gets a hunch. He also has a bit of pull in games of chance.
Power:
Winston doesn’t have any powers.
Social Status:
Winston was a loner military brat.
Summer or Year Rounder:
Winston is somewhere between a summer camper and a year round camper. He spends the entire summer at camp. During the school year, he is at camp over the weekends, when he is not able to be at the Institute.
Years at Camp:
Winston just celebrated his third full year at camp, having started the summer before he started high school. He was 14, almost 15, at the time and is now 17, almost 8.
Life Before Camp:
Montana and Aunt Monica: The First 2 Years
Winston was born in Montana, when his dad was 22 years old. Winston was never particularly bothered by not having a mom around. His Aunt Monica was enough of a mom figure for him when he was little, and then he didn’t feel like he needed one. When Winston was 2, his younger sister, Lizzy, was born. Winston’s dad was living away with the army, and Winston was living with Aunt Monica, when his dad returned with an 8 month pregnant woman. Lizzy’s mom wasn’t around long after she was born, but it didn’t bother Mr. Matthews much. It was almost like he had expected it. Winston has vague memories of Lizzy’s mom.
The Travel Years: Ages 2-13
Winston spent the next 11 years travelling with his dad. For these 11 years, he didn’t live with Lizzy. They lived on a bunch of military bases, rarely for long enough for Winston to totally settle down and make friends. Because of this, Winston’s greatest influence was his dad. Mr. Matthews home schooled Winston through the travel years. Mr. Matthews was able to easily instill his beliefs and life views on who Winston became. That’s why as Winston got older, he became a very straight on proper military man. By 13, Winston was generally no-nonsense. Winston’s dad was a firm believer in gender roles. He believed that men were meant to fight, and run the house, and defend women, while being stern and showing little emotion. He believed that women were the artsy ones, with all the emotions and taking care of the house, and all. This had a major effect on who Winston was by the time he was 13.
The Lizzy Years: Ages 12 & 13
Winston moved back in with Aunt Monica and Lizzy when he had just turned 12 when Mr. Matthews was deployed. He started school at the middle school in the area. That’s when Lizzy and Winston became the best of friends. Winston had never really developed the skills to make friends well. He was too disciplined and stern for the other middle schoolers around him. That’s why he became friends with his sister. Lizzy was always very artsy, which fueled Winston’s secret love of music. Lizzy taught Winston how to play ukulele, guitar, and piano, as well as helping him develop his voice. Winston and Lizzy, with the help of Aunt Monica, always kept this very secret from their dad. He would be very disappointed to learn about artsy Winston, as well as starting to become a bit more emotional.
California: Ages 14-Present
When Mr. Matthews returned from overseas, Winston and Lizzy moved to California to be near him. Winston stated school at the Oakland Military Institute, and Lizzy got accepted to a prestigious arts boarding school nearby. Less than month after the kids moved, Mr. Matthews was deployed again. Winston received the news of his death just weeks after he left. Winston was tasked with telling Lizzy. Winston went to her school to tell her, and they decided to go on a little trip on the upcoming break. (A lot was going on in Lizzy’s life at the time, but that is her story to tell.)That break was when their journey to camp started. They went on vacation to Pfieffer Big Sur State Park. At the time, Winston was 14 and Lizzy was 12. Lupa's wolf pack extracted them from the State Park. It meant so much to Winston that Lizzy was with him. Lizzy, a daughter of Flora, was a gift for Winston in the dark and confusing time after their father’s death. To this day, Lizzy is still Winston’s best friend, even though he is almost 18 and she is almost 16. Winston is now a student at Oakland Military Institute during the week during the school year, and a camper on the weekend and in the summer. He is slowly letting himself get more into music, even though he is still very formal and proper.
RP Example:
Winston sat on Lizzy’s bed at Aunt Monica’s in Missoula, Montana. He was expecting his dad later that day, so he was a ball of nervous energy. Lizzy was out getting them some tea. For whatever reason, they didn’t get coffee like normal teenagers, they drank tea, like old people, or British people. Winston slid Lizzy’s ukulele out from under her bed, and started fidgeting with purple ribbon tied at the top, before strumming out one of his favorite songs, starting to sing along. Winston heard the door open, but he assumed that it was Lizzy. He had, fortunately, stopped singing and was just strumming. Winston’s head turned when he saw Lizzy climbing in through the bedroom window, like she usually did. Thoughts rushed through his head. If Lizzy is here, and Aunt Monica is at work… That must be… Winston swore under his breath. He quickly pushed the ukulele to Lizzy and grabbed the tea, setting it on her desk, just in time. General Matthews made his way through the door, and Winston snapped into attention, saluting his superior officer. General Matthews smiled and said, ”At ease, boy.” before offering his hand to his son to shake, and wrapping his arms around Lizzy.
