Murphy's law states that eventually, everything that can go wrong will go wrong. And to prolong that inevitable go-wronging of a machine, periodic checks and improvements to one are required. Julien took this very close to heart, and had decided earlier today to give his cabin's chariot a look over.
Now, about two hours later, the son of Nike was on a dolly and under the painted wooden racing machine. What first started out as a simple checkup revealed a very simple mistake: a wheel grinding against the axle, which was a simple fix requiring some grease and WD40. But that then revealed that axle was rusted after being put away and not looked at for so long (probably a result of being stored in the winter). That fix was much harder, but doable.
After taking some time to get a new axle, Julien got the chariot on blocks and began taking off the old axle, putting himself under the chariot.
