A year ago, Spencer couldn't have guessed that life would feel so... marvellous. A year ago, her concerns had been passing English Lit and squashing Jessica Lewis on the race tracks. Today, everything was different. She had been led away by wolves to a ruined mansion in Sonoma Valley, trained by an old Roman goddess called Lupa and joined the ranks of the 12th Legion Fulminata, heritage of Ancient Rome in the modern world. She had been part of a combat mission in Utah and discovered her family relations to the goddesses Victoria and Fortuna.
Of course, she had quit school. But that didn't mean she lost contact with all her old friends from before.
Today was the 4th of July -- Independence Day and her birthday. Soon enough her guests would stream into the house for a barbecue in the garden and fireworks. She was just finishing putting the fingerfood on the table with Phil while her father blew air into glossy beach balls and tossed them into the pool.
Spencer wore a white dress and goofy USA flag sunglasses, her cornrows pinned up in a bun. Her smile was wider than ever as she arranged everything on the tables, skipping here and there. "Everything okay Phil? You look a bit pale."
