A year ago, Spencer couldn't have guessed that life would feel so... marvellous. A year ago, her concerns had been passing English Lit and squashing Jessica Lewis on the race tracks. Today, everything was different. She had been led away by wolves to a ruined mansion in Sonoma Valley, trained by an old Roman goddess called Lupa and joined the ranks of the 12th Legion Fulminata, heritage of Ancient Rome in the modern world. She had been part of a combat mission in Utah and discovered her family relations to the goddesses Victoria and Fortuna.
Of course, she had quit school. But that didn't mean she lost contact with all her old friends from before.

Today was the 4th of July -- Independence Day and her birthday. Soon enough her guests would stream into the house for a barbecue in the garden and fireworks. She was just finishing putting the fingerfood on the table with Phil while her father blew air into glossy beach balls and tossed them into the pool.
Spencer wore a white dress and goofy USA flag sunglasses, her cornrows pinned up in a bun. Her smile was wider than ever as she arranged everything on the tables, skipping here and there. "Everything okay Phil? You look a bit pale."

Phil raised his eyebrow. "You sure that's not how I usually am?"

He was actually pretty pumped about today. Finally July 4th had an actual non-patriotic meaning. Also, living kinda normal was a nice change of pace... as normal as having an olympic-level athlete around was. Or being in New Mexico.

So basically, he was eager to help around -for a change- and pretty excited to meet Spencer's out-of-camp friends because why wouldn't he be? This was a time for having fun, watch fireworks, pretend that the accident of where someone got born should make them feel proud and celebrate his best friend's birthday.

Spencer chuckled. "I hoped that after some time in New Mexico you'd get a bit of a tan." She gave him a gentle punch and disappeared back into the house.
The building itself was quite nice, in the wealthier outskirts of the city. It had landscaped front and back yards with trimmed rose bushes and a swimming pool. Spencer loved it here. With the open kitchen she could do as many BBQs as she liked -- she is a nut for summer grilling -- and could go for a run in the nearby park any time of the day.
She came back out with some freshly cut peppers and made two slices jut out from her upper lip. "Look I'm a walrus." But just then the doorbell rang and she had to quickly swallow them. "Time to shine!"

Mhm. That totally didn't mean he would obsessively spend all the remaining time there out in the sun. Even at night, which would totally make no sense. After all, she was just trying to tease him. Yup.

So, when the bell rang and Spencer went on to open, he checked to see if this was inside-out or not, fixed his hair a bit and followed Spencer. Why? Cause social expectations and he should probably want to make a good first impression on Spencer's friends. That just makes sense. Besides he didn't worry too much, he was very good with people. On the off chance they found him funny cause that was his go-to way of... communicating, pretty much.
