The Southern Dark Forest Empty [Private] Camping

Post by Ace of Spades 10/25/2011, 1:09 am

Andrew walked on a dirt path in the Deadly Forest that curved off to a part that was lesser known to most of the camp. It led to one of the more flora-crowded regions that hindered capture the flag matches and wasn't as desirable for monsters to inhabit in (or so people thought). Still, warm rays of light penetrated between the dense tree branches, telling Andrew it was still late afternoon- plenty of time to set up camp. He was carrying standard camping gear, with hopefully everything he'd need. The idea of camping within a camp but not necessarily in the camp intrigued and confused him at the same time. He didn't know when, why, or how the idea came into his mind, but he had decided to go along with it, and now here he was.

Andrew broke through the dense forest and arrived at a small clearing of grass. He decided that this was a good spot to set up camp. Walking to the middle of the clearing, he set down his gear and started setting up the tent. He had brought along two for some reason, maybe in hope of someone(s) else somehow coming along, willing to join in this (mis)adventure.

Kyler trudged through the underbrush of the forest, following her boyfriend. "Anders," She complained. "Where are we going?" She usually wasn't so whiny, but her feet hurt, and she was carrying a heavy load on her back. Not even the beautiful, warm rays of sunshine that peeked through the dense leaves of the trees made her feel better.
Anders smiled as they walked through the forest. "Oh come on, Kyler, it's a beautiful day! Don't spoil it with unimportant questions!" He took a deep breath through the nose, taking in all the woodsy, flowery, smells around him.
Kyler groaned. "Can you at least help me carry this?" She asked, holding up a sleeping bag.
Anders chuckled as he turned around and walked back to her. "Fine." He said quietly as he took the bag away from her and gave her a quick kiss on the lips. "Come on, baby, it's not too much farther." He turned back around and began walking, Kyler following suit.

Jaz walked into the forest; her intentions were to chase after a monster or find someone to talk to, but as she got deeper and deeper into the southern part of the forest, she had a thought. It would actually be really fun to hang out here overnight. Even more exciting would be to get attacked in her sleep. The idea of such an adrenaline rush excited Jaz way too much for sane people to understand.

Her walk though these parts was nonchalant and unworried, yet she was aware of every rustle in the bushes. Every time the wind blew, every crack of a branch. Her heightened senses may have been the effect of her being a demigod, it could have been because of her rigorous self-discipline to catch and notice the signs needed to hunt, or perhaps it was a combination of both. She carried herself high, with great posture and had her hands tucked casually into her pockets. A cool breeze rushed by her cheek, taking a hold of her long ponytail for a brief moment. Jaz smiled. "Today will be a wonderful day."

Andrew broke out one of the tents and started setting it up for the night. He noticed that the bag holding the metal sticks was still in the backpack. He fished them out of his pack, but when he raised it up, it was upside-down and the opening spewed the contents on the ground. Andrew sighed and brushed his hand through his jet black hair before picking up the rods. He then proceeded to give the nylon tent structure by inserting the flexible, metal poles in the proper places. The tent was meant for a single person, but it could fit two if necessary.

As he was constructing, he heard some murmurs in the surrounding forest and raised his head. Andrew wondered if the sounds came from monsters or human but didn't bother to find out. He was in the southern side of the forest, notorious for deadlier, hungrier monsters than the north side, after all. If anything were to approach, he'd have plenty of time to react, what with the space of the clearing. Just to make sure, though, he transformed his chain necklace into his Celestial Bronze repeater crossbow and set it next to his backpack. Feeling sufficiently safe, he hummed Internal Cannon by August Burns Red as he continued to put up his tent.

Anders continued walking toward a ramote clearing he found while exploring in the forest-well, he got lost, but don't tell Kyler that one. "We're almost there, Kyler, you'll love it!" He continued smiling, looking at all the wildlife around him.
Kyler sighed, her favorite shoes were getting really muddy. "Anders, can we stop and rest? Just for a little while? Please!" She ran her slender fingers through her long, dark hair; causing it to fall out of her purple clip.
"Kyler, we can't stop now, I'll never get you to continue going!" He stepped over rocks and tree branches, carefully watching the forest around him for monsters; the forest was crawling with creatures, specially at this time of day.
Kyler rolled her eyes, and continued following Anders, staying four or five feet behind him but she was getting slower and slower. She hated walking. Give her rock climbing, sword fighting, swimming, she didn't care; just anything besides hiking.
Anders grinned, they were getting close.

Jaz's eyes darted around, looking for something, anything, that would lead her to some sort of prey. A broken branch. Too worn and long been broken to lead to anything. A track. Merely a shoe print from an earlier traveler. Some feces. All old and crusty. Jaz frowned and kept looking for signs when she saw the track of what looked like a large dog. Bingo.

Jaz bent down to look at the track and pointed her finger in the direction it lead, like any good tracker. This lead her to another and another. By further inspection of the tracks, she could tell the beast was favoring it's right leg, indicating it was injured. Perhaps that would make it easier, but Jaz wasn't looking for too much of a challenge, just something to do. She followed the tracks for several minutes until she reached the river. The tracks just ended. Jaz frowned, disappointed, and looked for evidence of where the beast may have went. Nothing. She sighed and gave up the search by going back to casually walking in the other direction.

After a few minutes, the tent was all set up and ready for dozing off in whenever Andrew desired. For now, however, he'd have to get some drywood and thick branches to keep a fire burning through the night. He brushed his hands on his jeans and picked up his crossbow. He didn't know what could possibly be out there, so he thought it'd be best to be prepared for the worst.

Andrew decided to leave all his gear here rather than take his backpack with him. It'd just be too unwieldy. Still humming to himself, he breached the treeline and went looking for solid burning material. His walk was near silent as he instinctively avoided the obvious crunch of leaves and snaps of twigs so any nearby monsters wouldn't be alerted of his presence. He wanted this to be a fun night, not a problematic, stress-filled foray, but somehow, the thought that of the one thing he wanted to avoid kept popping into his head.

As Anders and Kyler approached the place Anders was looking for, they noticed a figure, about the size of a human. "Kyler, stay here." Anders whispered, as he approached where the figure was walking. "I can't tell if it's human or not..." He muttered to himself as he got closer.
Kyler sighed and rolled her eyes, sitting down on a log. She was just glad to get a quick rest while Anders went and played the role of the brave boyfriend. If it was a monster, knowing Anders, he would just run over to Kyler and make her deal with it-she had always been a better swordsman than he.
Anders continued going towards the figure, walking through the branches and such as quietly as he could. He wove through trees so he wouldn't be seen easily. He was becoming quite proud of himself-for moving so quietly- when his joyous feelings disappeared as he stepped on a small branch, it snapping beneath him.

Jaz had a thought, turned back towards the river and came back to it. She scooped her hands to take a long refreshing drink. Natural water always seemed the best to her. When she was done, she flicked excess water off her hands and stood up slowly. Turning away from the river again, she headed in a new direction. This time she wasn't on a hunt, rather having a peaceful stroll in the dark, cool forest.

Through the trees, Jaz noticed something odd colored. As she came closer, she discovered a small tent in a relatively large clearing. That's odd, she thought to herself. She came out into the clearing and inspected the gear. It appeared there were two tents, yet only one person's gear. Odd, Jaz thought again. The person who had set up this camp appeared to be gone for just a short while, yet she couldn't help but wonder if this camp were abandoned.

Hearing a snap, Andrew impulsively swiveled on his heel to the direction of the sound with his crossbow raised at eye level. He slowly drifted his aim left to right to see what had made the sound, but the densely crowded trees made it difficult to see what was actually there. Deciding to risk it, he asked firmly, "Who's there?"

Andrew stood in a stalwart manner as he waited for a response, vocal or physical. Hopefully it wasn't a monster because Andrew wasn't in much of a hunting mood. His right index finger was poised on the light trigger, nonetheless. He was glad he knew how to shoot a gun; a crossbow wasn't much different except for the slower trajectory.

Anders yelped and dropped what he was holding, and put his hands in the air. "I didn't do it!" He hollered.
Kyler heard the whimpy squeal of her boyfriend and sighed. "Do I need to come save your butt, baby?" She stood up and took off one of her rings, it turning into a longsword. Walking towards where Anders was, she was carefull not to disturb anything. "Anders, what did you do this time?" She called again.

Jaz could hear something nearby. It sounded like people were talking, but it was a great enough distance that even she wasn't completely sure. This almost nearly confirmed her notion that this camp was in fact occupied. One part of Jaz wanted her to go talk to them, but something in the back of her head gave her a brilliant idea. She crawled into the open tent and sat facing out so she could see. It felt slightly confining at first, since the nylon tent blocked some of the sound from outside, but she was determined to follow through with the plan. If it worked correctly, whoever this tent belonged to would be startled to find a person waiting for them inside. Oh what fun.

Andrew realized the voice belonged to a guy, a rather pusillanimous one at that, and lowered his crossbow. He started walking through the trees in front of him and saw a guy a bit older looking than he was. He let his crossbow point fully downwards, holding it in his right hand. A girl came after the boy, she obviously knowing him. She said his name, and Andrew took note of it.

"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you." He tried to reconcile with the guy named Anders. "I thought you were a monster. Could never be too cautious around here." He glanced from one person to the other, noticing the girl's sword. Deducing from their reactions, Andrew had the amusing guess that the girl was trying to save the guy or something. He hid his grin behind his mask of not-so-seriousness.

"You, didn't scare me, I was just, you know, being cautious." Anders denied.
Kyler stood behind Anders, suddenly shy of the new boy. He was taller than she, had dark hair and tanner skin. Her sword turned back into her sapphire ring and she placed it back on the middle finger of her right hand.
"I'm Anders." Anders said, introducing himself. "And this is my girlfriend Kyler." He said wrapping his arm around her shoulders like she was as amazing as the sun, which caused Kyler to blush and look away.
"Idiot," Kyler muttered to her boyfriend.

Jaz was starting to get bored really quickly. She laid down on her back, feeling the rocks through the tent bottom. She opened up her shoulder bag and pulled out some chips. The bag crinkled noisily as she peeled it open slowly. Jaz smiled as she smelled the salty potato chips inside. She pulled out one chip and ate it slowly. Her patience dried out and she ate the chips at a normal rate, comfortably sitting inside the tent.

Andrew couldn't help but let out a chuckle. He decided to return his weapon into its chain necklace form and put it back on. He gave a warm smile. "Nice to meet 'cha. I'm Andrew."

He gave a quick look-around on their whereabouts and then turned back to the couple. "So, why're you guys here? Isn't it a bit dangerous to be clumsily stepping on branches and yelping?" Andrew lightly teased. He put his hands in his hoodie pockets, standing rather relaxed now.

Anders frowned but answered his questions. "We were just going to sleep under the stars in this really pretty clearing in the woods I found while taking a walk the other day."
"You mean, when you got lost, the other day." Kyler muttered.
"Shut up." Anders replied, smiling. "So, yeah. But, what are you doing here?"

This was getting incredibly boring for Jaz. Just sitting there made her anxious and jumpy. She began tapping her toes to a non-existent beat as she ate her chips. It was times like these that Jaz wanted some sort of music device, like an iPod or something, but most days she thought it was pointless, seeing as she could busy herself with other more exciting things throughout the day. Jaz looked at her nonexistent wristwatch and wondered when the owner of this tent would get there. Even though it had probably only been a few minutes, Jaz felt like she had been sitting in there for hours.

Andrew smirked at Kyler's interjection. Replying to Anders, he said, "Just gonna go camping for the night. It was a random idea that popped in my head this morning."

He noted that the boy mentioned something about a clearing. "You wouldn't be talking about the same clearing I am, would you? Did you see one with a tent and gear 'round here?" He asked. Andrew was curious because maybe the two of them would want to camp with him. Company was always (more like usually) a good thing to have, and it was definitely better than spending the night alone, he supposed.

Jaz twisted the rings on her hingers with her thumbs, the way she normally did when she got antsy. The ones on her her pointer fingers would turn into swords of celestial bronze and stygian iron. The one on her right middle finger, which had an engraving of a dragon on it, would turn into a long spear; the spearhead made of stygian iron. The others were just for show. Her other weapon was tucked into the pocket of her coat, but she only kept it around because it made her feel more secure. It wasn't like she had actually used it against anyone, she just liked having it around.

Gosh, there better be people who actually belong to this camp... or else I've wasted my time, Jaz thought as she looked up at the top of the tent. It was small. Probably meant for only one or two people, she judged.

Andrew grinned and nodded in agreement. "I was just gonna go look for some wood and stuff to make a fire. Want to help?" He asked the duo. He took his hands out of his pockets and bent down to start picking up some decent-sized branches. More people would mean less time wasted in the already-late afternoon before it got dark, he thought. He didn't care if they helped or not though. It was their choice after all.

Kyler nodded, her earrings bobbing. "I'll help out," She said quickly, knowing if she said she'd help then Anders would help too.
Anders sighed quietly, "I'll help as well, it'll be quicker if we help out."
Kyler heard the tone of his voice and knew he didn't want to help, he wasn't going to let her be alone with some guy they just met. She chuckled as she began walking towards a small clump of trees much denser and darker than the rest of the forest, hoping to find more firewood there.
Anders followed Kyler, not about to let her go towards the darker area of the forest alone. "You coming, Andrew?" He called back towards him.

Andrew rose his head and nodded. "Yeah, I'll catch up." he replied as he grabbed a few more sticks. He didn't know how much they'd need for the night but an overabundance never hurt anyone, he supposed. Andrew kept his eyes and ears open for any unusual noises. They were in the southern half of the forest after all. Who knows what kind of baddies could be lurking around. He decided not to wait and find out and followed Anders and Kyler.

Kyler began collecting sticks and small logs, one after the other, on and on. There were quite a lot of them in this section of the forest. All the dry twigs and sticks they could need for the night, she didn't know how many she just continued collecting.
Anders collected sticks too, but he was more worried about the fact that Kyler was carrying more than he. I'm a freaking son of Ares and her boyfriend, this shouldn't be okay! But he chose to ignore the fact. She would hate it if he waited on her hand and foot, he did it enough. She's her own independent self and can do as she pleases. Anders looked back towards Andrew, still unsure if he could be trusted.
