Maelstrom lets out a small sigh. If only she could do something like that. She turns her head to face Selena. Would she make fun of her for her lame power? It wasn't cool or anything. She couldn't really do anything with it.
"I can make vines come out of the ground," Maelstrom says, her voice barely and audible whisper. She didn't like her power at all. To her it was completely useless and not at all powerful. Compared to other powers she had seen kids use, she gave her power a one out of ten. Why couldn't she have something cool like them? She couldn't summon spirits to fight for her or manipulate water. She could make a measly vine grow out of the ground. Even worse, she could barely even use it during the wintertime. It was pretty much the only thing that linked her to her mother. Her mother couldn't do anything during the winter, so why should Maelstrom be able to? It was dumb logic.
Maelstrom takes the finishing bite of her pizza, then a long sip of her sugared iced tea. She didn't really even like tea. It just somehow reminded her of her home. The place where at least two people cared for her. And neither of them were even related to her. She didn't really see her parents as her parents, more like a taker of burdens. That was all Maelstrom was, a burden.
The girl lets out another short sigh as she waits for Selena to answer. What was her reaction going to be? Was she going to make fun of her for her lame power, or even worse, pretend to act like it is cool. Maelstrom hated when people pretended to agree with people to make them happy. She thought that if someone was to say something, at least say it truthfully. Her eyes dart back and forth to anything that wasn't Selena's face. She was afraid, to be honest. She didn't want to have just ruined her friendship over something stupid. Would Selena start to dislike her because of her trust issues? If only she knew the answer now. That would save her so much guessing. She wouldn't have to always think about these stupid things in her head. She would be able to say what she knew would be the correct answer, without having any consequences.
That will be the day. she tells herself in her head.
