The Abandoned Observatory

She giggled. "Oh honey...we have sleeping pills you know."

I looked rather confused. "Wha...? I don't understand..." I felt, looked and sounded like a little lost puppy. I looked out the window and noticed it was dark out.

She giggled at little. "I actually have some at my cabin...if you want some."

"D-do they work?" I asked. Then without thinking- "Are there many people in your cabin?"

She nodded. "Yes they work and nope there usually isn't...why?" She squinted her eyes at him.

"Social anxiety," I said rather ashamed.

She touched his hand lightly. "It's okay..."

"Can't what?" She raised an eyebrow.

She nodded. "Yes! Let's go to my cabin!" She smiled and grabbed his hand lightly, walking away.

I close the door quietly behind me. What is this place? Cobwebs cover nearly every corner, old faded star maps hang from the walls. Constellations, planets, stars of every size and color. A domed ceiling rises above my head with a round hole in the ceiling, shining a spotlight on the middle of the room. An old tattered book lies in that spotlight. Mainly out of curiosity, I step slowly towards it. When I finally reach it, I pick it up. It seems to be a diary of some sort. The first page looks like some sort of title page, covered in fancy, swooping handwriting. I read it aloud. "The Scientific Journal of-" I'm cut short as the book drops out of my hands, and the floor drops from under my feet. I shriek, but manage to hold myself up by my elbows.

Alexis walked in, she needed some alone time to think. Under Alexis arm was her journal. Every thought, memory, or word she had ever thought of was written in it. Starting from the time that her mother had died and she became an orphan.

Seeing someone walk in during this embarrassing moment, I pull myself up out of the hole and silently stand in front of it. I shuffle my feet and tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear, before clearing my throat, rather loudly. "Can I help you?" I ask. My voice echoes around the room and I wince.

Alexia stared at the girl and let out a deep sigh. "The question isn't if you can help me...it's if I can help you." She walked around the dark room. "But I wouldn't care for your help anyways." She shoved her hand in her pocket and held her journal with her free hand. "Why do you look so suspicious?"

I straighten up in panic as she circles the room. Soon she'll be where she can the hole. "I...stole something." But then I lost it in this frickin hole. I answer, thinking of the journal. "What are you doing here?"

"None of your business." Alexis glared at her with her purple eyes. Alexis came across the hole and laughed. "I'm guessing you did that."

I pivot around to face her. "None of your business, either." I tell her, though the answer is obviously yes. "What's your name?" I ask, my curiosity taking over once more.

"Alexis Thorne, daughter of Thanatos." Alexis grabbed a book and started to read.

"Well, that explains that vague, rather mysterious comments." I mutter under my breath. I walk back over to the hole. Somewhere below me, the mysterious journal lay in rotting leaves and grass. I sigh.

"Want me to get it?" Alexis walked to the hole and looked down.

"Could you?" I ask, gratefully. "I was looking at it and the floor just fell from under me." I say, watching the light from the hole in the ceiling act like a searchlight on the dark ground.

Alexis sighed and sunk into the ground. She ended up at the bottom of the hole and searched around. "What does it look like?"

"It's leather and kind of worn. I has a sort of swooping writing on the first page. Do you need a flashlight?" I call down through the hole.
