the beach. it was pretty much joel's home. he might as well take his cabin and plop it down on the golden shoreline. wouldn't that be awesome? oh man, joel could see it now: waking up and opening up the curtains to see the vast ocean and the rising sun. screw bia, joel should've been a son of triton or some other water god. well, that would all be worth it if he was given the ability to breathe underwater. if he couldn't, then having a water god as a parent would be dumb. anyways, back to joel in the present.

the son of bia was sitting on the sand, surfboard next to him. he was suited up in a black o'neill wet-suit top and a pair of tangerine-colored board shorts. his surfboard was still attached to his ankle with a leash. joel didn't take it off, for he planned on getting back in the water soon. he had just finished an after breakfast session and now was taking a little break. it was a perfect day. the sun was hot and bright, the sky was a pristine blue; there was not a single cloud in the sky, and the waves were bomber. joel couldn't help but have a smile splayed on his face as he sat, his eyes squinted due to the harsh sunlight. this joel's vision of the best possible day. he was doing what he loved and everything seemed to be cooperating with him. nothing could rain on his parade today.

The beach was one of Mia's favorite places to go. From swimming in the cool waters of the ocean to talking and relaxing with others in the sun, she could do all she wanted. The best part was the abundance of interesting people she could meet on the beach. It was where she found fifty percent of her conversations. Today, she was just there for the chance of conversation. Still, she was dressed ready for swimming, just in case she changed her mind. Talking always had priority. It was the reason she was rarely stressed.

Looking around, all she could see was sand, with a few people here and there who looked as if they wanted to isolate themselves from the world. Mia didn't talk to those people. She learned that lesson a long time ago. It would only end with her feelings getting hurt, her in tears and them leaving out of annoyance.

When she felt that there was no one that she could potentially strike up a conversation with, she tried her alternative method; she sat by the edge of the shore and leaned back with her arms against the already warm sand. The daughter of Circe would wait for people to approach her. It rarely worked, but she could be wrong about not being able to start a conversation with anyone. First impressions weren't right all the time.

So she watched the waves crash onto sand. The water rose a bit higher than it did during the day. After all, it was only seven-thirty in the morning. The shining sun was still rising, the birds were still chirping, and people were still waking up.

after a few minutes, joel decided it was time for his to hit the waves again. the demigod stands up and picks up his surfboard, then walks to the edge of the water. he lays his board down on the water, then lays down on top of it and starts paddling out to the open water, where he would hopefully catch some gnarly waves. at the moment, none seemed to be rolling in, so joel sits up on his board and looks out towards the beach. there were a few kids splayed out along the shoreline here and there, but most of them had their head in their knees and looked like they wanted to die. joel didn't understand those people. there was so much to live for and all these kids wanted to do was be alone and groan about anything and everything. joel was an optimist to the extreme; nothing ever got in his way or made him feel down. he always had a way to enjoy himself. the boy's eyes did come to rest on one person sitting on the edge of the shoreline, who appeared to be a female. looks could be deceiving though, especially from the distance that joel was looking at him/her. joel didn't care who it was, from out there he could see that the person looked much more friendly than the other kids on the beach just from the way he/she was sitting. the son of bia, without even knowing who the person was, waves to her, a smile adorning his face. the boy was all about friendliness. he was super approachable and could create a conversation about anything. what a guy.

suddenly the waves start to push joel up and down on his surfboard. the demigod quickly gets himself onto his feet and starts balancing himself out so he won't fall. heck yeah! the waves were starting to pick up, just what joel wanted. the demigod turns his head to out to the horizon to see a decent size wave approaching him. with a laugh, he starts to dance around on his board, trying to look like an idiot and perhaps be a conversation starter if the person approaches him later. as he was about mid-dance, the wave hits and joel manages to ride it for the most part. it was only during him doing a disco dance that a sudden surge of water manages to overthrow him. the boy topples into the water and goes under for a few seconds before popping his head up and hopping back on his board. with a smile on his face, he starts to paddle his way back to shore. once he gets closer, he can make out that the person is a girl. now, at that thought, a lot of guys would turn around and get all nervous or whatnot. joel wasn't a lot of guys though. gender didn't deter joel. just because he had friends that were girls didn't mean that he was going to date them. no, joel was not like that at all. the boy would actually much rather prefer to have a bunch of friends rather than risk losing any due to a relationship.

once he makes it to the shore, the son of bia lays his surfboard on the ground and plops down on it. he looks over to the girl, who was about ten feet away from him. "well, i tried, but disco dancing surfing isn't successful yet," he tells her with a shrug and a warm smile.

Post by Blaze 7/6/2015, 12:46 pm

Mia began looking around for any other sign of human life she could interact with. Eventually, she gave up and stared back out into the ocean. Minutes later, out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a boy swimming out into the waters on a board. Soon, he was a good distance away from her, but she saw him wave in her direction. Mia turned around to see who the boy was waving to, but there was no one. Huh. Could he have been waving at her, then? That seemed like something Mia would do. So she waved back at the surfer, her smile still on her face as always. Greeting unknowns was what she did. Her goal was to meet as many people and make as many friends as possible at camp, even if they weren't "lifetime" friends or whatever. The more the merrier! And she loved being merry. On average, she made one a day. On good days, she could meet up to three people. Today was a good day! At least, she thought so. Today was the day she had gone two weeks straight without bursting into tears at something rude someone said to her. The last few days had been quite pleasant to her, and she hoped it would stay that way.

The daughter of Circe changed her sitting position to sitting on both knees as she watched the male surf across some average-sized waves. He then proceeded to dancing on his surfboard, making Mia giggle non-stop. Until a wave knocked him into the water, of course. She let out a small gasp before she glimpsed his head poke above the surface. The boy hopped back on the board quickly and headed closer to her. Yay! Conversation. If the surfer was as outgoing and hilarious as he was in the water, it could make for an extremely interesting exchange. Once he reached shore, he plopped his surfboard down on the sand and laid on it, facing her. "Well, I tried, but disco dancing surfing isn't successful yet," he said nonchalantly.

Mia laughed, turning herself to face the boy. "I'm sure you'll perfect it someday," she replied, a wide smile plastered on her face. "I'm Mia! What's your name?" she asked enthusiastically. The distance between them was a bit awkward for a conversation, but Mia really didn't mind at the moment. She was talking to someone, and that was all she cared about. Her full attention was given to every conversation she had. This was no different.

was this joel's long lost twin? she seemed so laid back and enthusiastic, she must've been. joel changes his position on the surfboards so he was sitting on his knees. "i've spent more than ten years trying to perfect it, perhaps it's unobtainable, like how disco mountain biking is. i've tried that, it didn't turnt out very well. no, not at all," the boy rambles with a laugh, conversation came very naturally to joel and he was never one to turn one down. he had his uprbringing to thank for that. always being on the move and meeting new faces turned joel into a social butterfly, as girly as it sounds.

"but yeah, my name is joel! my mom is bia, the goddess of force. i don't have any cool powers though. sometimes i wish i did, but then again it just makes it even cooler when i do something dumb and can say i did it all on my own accord and without the aid of any power. what about you? who is your parent? do you have any sweet powers?" the boy just went on and on, craving for conversation. he hadn't had a good one in a long time. most of the kids at camp gave him one word responses and acted like they wanted to die. that's not someone joel describes as fun to talk to. he wished more people would answer him with essays rather than a single word. the son of bia is the type of guy who wants to know anything about everything, and will act interested in a subject even if he has no clue what the subject is. it's not that he enjoyed attention, no, not joel. he simply enjoyed having a good old talk with someone about good subjects, not things like death. normally joel wasn't as open as he was with mia, but she seemed to share the same love for conversation that he had, so he rambled away.

Mia beamed as the boy moved the conversation along. At this rate, she could be talking for hours! This thought made her extremely happy. It didn't hurt that her conversation partner was interesting as well. His tone made him sound so into their conversation. "Aw, come on. Nothing's impossible! Not for a demigod, at least. You just need to keep trying again and again!" Mia stated, laughing along with him. "Also, if you ever try disco anything again, please invite me," she requested. "I'd love to see the attempt where you succeed. I wouldn't miss it for anything!" the daughter of Circe told him, her wide grin still present.

"It's really nice to meet you, Joel! I've never met a child of Bia before, but I've heard of her," Mia began, trying to remember what else he said. Her forgetfulness didn't help with conversations sometimes, which bothered her to no end. When she forgot what the other person said, it pushed away other topics the conversation might lead to. She thought deeply for a few seconds, and she finally remembered that he said something about powers. "Oh! Sorry, I just had to think for a bit. It happens a lot. Well, I do have powers, but I don't usually use them. My mom is Circe, and her powers all deal with weird witchcraft and necromancy and magic and stuff. Making fire and creating fake animals to scare people. It's not really my thing, but it's fun to practice! I like creating small, cute animals and watch what they do. There's also this one power that I've never used on purpose before. I dunno when would be the right time to use it, but it'd be lots of fun!" she raved, trying to explain everything in detail, because detail made everything much more interesting. Her train of thought left her through her mouth as rapidly as it popped into her brain.

joel listens intently to mia, his eyes looking out to the sun on the horizion, which was now fully in the sky and shining with all of its splendor. it was a beautiful day, which meant the beach was probably going to be mobbed with demigods soon. joel didn't mind if the beach got crowded, but what he did mind was that it often got loud to the point where he couldn't hear the person he happened to be talking to at the time. at this time it was mia, and damn could she talk. the son of bia freaking loved it. so many kids he had talked to were ridiculously anti-social; talking to mia was like being swept over by a welcoming wave of words. as mia tells him about how he was to invite her the next time he tried to disco dance anything, the boy cannot help but laugh, his mind turning to all the sports he could try to disco dance. skiing, mountain running, pogo-sticking, the possibilities were endless!

as mia tells joel about her powers, the boy couldn't help but wonder what it must be like to have ancient power at your fingertips. how cool would it be to be able to able to command fire and making faux animals. this didn't really make joel jealous, for he was not that type of person, but it did make him curious as to what it was like. when mia mentions her last power, joel can't help but wonder what it was. "woah, your powers sound awesome! it must be really cool to have them! i can't even imagine what it would be like to say "bam!" and have a ball of fire in my hand or raising some kids pet from the dead, making both of them happy. i like to see happy people and try my best to make people happy. oh! what's the last power that you mentioned? it sounds super cool, with all the not telling me what it is and all!" he rambles, his mouth running at a thousand miles per hour. this girl was super interesting and made joel wonder where she has been all of his life; not in a romantic way, but in a friendly way. romance wasn't joel's thing. he'd much rather have ten thousand friends than the possibility of losing them all thanks to one person. no, no, no, joel wanted a lot of friends; people he could always talk to. that's all the boy needed in life: people to converse with.

Mia's smile grew larger and larger as she listened to him talk on and on about what he would do if he had her powers. "Thanks a lot! I enjoy having them, even though I don't use them much. It's so great how you love making people happy. Everyone should be happy!" Mia agreed. She had a blank on what he was talking about when he mentioned her "last power", but she managed to grab the memory. Conversing with him kept her thinking. That was good for her. Maybe it could improve her short-term memory. "Oh! Right. My last power is that I can shape-shift into a hamster. I know it's not that impressive but I think it's pretty cool to be able to shape-shift in the first place!" she chattered cheerfully. Joel was an interesting person, and she felt like she could spend hours talking to him and never get bored. During her time at camp, she had never met someone as boisterous and happy as him, and he made her happier than she already was. In a friendly way! Romance wasn't her thing. Friends were her thing. Lots and lots of them. It wasn't that she couldn't find anyone that she really liked -- she had tons of people she really liked! She just didn't want to accidentally hurt someone else's feelings. She knew how it felt to have her feelings hurt. One person's feelings hurt led to more people's feelings hurt. That didn't make anyone happy. Mia wanted everyone to be happy.

Mia followed his gaze to the glowing sun, now high up in the sky. It was marvelous. Mia would sometimes go to the beach just to see the sunrise. It was a nice way to start the day. The rays of the sun symbolized happiness for her. Her first emotion of the day was almost always her only emotion of the day. Sadness resulted in her wallowing in tears in her cabin. Happiness equaled conversation and friends. If you couldn't tell, happiness was the better option. There was also anger, but she had never been so angry before. Mia didn't want to know what she was like when she was angry. The daughter of Circe thought that anger would make her feel worse about herself than she did when she was sad. "It's pretty, isn't it? The sun, I mean," Mia marveled, her thoughts floating out of her brain every second.

"are you serious? you can turn into a hamster? that is totally awesome!" joel exclaims, his voice the epitome of energy. the boy's mind could not stop thinking about all the cool things he could do if he turned into a hamsterit would be hilarious enough just to become one, but to spend the day just chilling around camp as a freaking hamster . . . that would definitely be a once in a lifetime experience. but then again there was always the fact that there were many kids and creatures around camp who most likely would not think twice about enjoying a tasty hamster for lunch. joel did not want to become someone's lunch, so he crosses the idea of hanging around camp as a hamster all day off of his mental to-do list. perhaps he would be one for half of a day though; yeah, that would work.what if someone was holding mia as a hamster and she turned back into a human? or if they were carrying her in their shirt pocket or something? goddess, joel's mind was on a one-way track to more and more thoughts, some of them completely outrageous.

joel exhales deeply, trying to gain control of his spinning mind. what had mia said? somehing about light? oh yeah! the sun! the son of bia tilts his head a little bit and and stares out to the horizon. "yeah it is. i wonder what it must be like on the sun chariot: the good ol' apollo express. we should try to ride it somethime! that would be awesome!" poor joel, his mind absolutely refused to stay on topic. anything and everything distracted him and created new thoughts in his head. they all swirled together, some even combing to create some completely bizarre idea that made one ponder if joel was on drugs. joel was one hundred percent clean though. no drugs for him, no sir. the boy's mind was simply adhd to the max, shooting from subject to subject. seriously, joel's mind traveled at the speed of a rocket leaving orbit and never stopped. there was no way to contain it all in his head, so sometimes he blurted things out, like how he had just now. he couldn't control it and it didn't really bother him that he did so. it just made things all the more interesting!

Huh. The sun. What did she tell herself before she woke up? Oh, right. That when the sun rose all the way she had to get ready for an outing. "I know, right! Though, there are still some pretty bad things that could happen to a hamster at this camp. I would gladly list them for you, but I really have to get going. I'm going to the movies with a group of friends soon, and I need to get ready. It was really, really nice talking to you, Joel!" Mia told him. And she did. He'd been the most engaging conversation partner she could remember during her time at camp. She would happily talk to him again any time. But camp was so large, and there were so many people to talk to. Plus, it was unlikely that she'd run into him again. Well, maybe not that unlikely, but she barely saw anyone that she managed to strike up a conversation with again. But she really did want to talk to him again. She couldn't just pass up someone this great and fascinating.

"But...if you're ever thinking of going disco-anything again, my bunk is the third bottom one on the left side of Cabin 25," the daughter of Circe informed. "And if you ever get a chance to ride the Apollo Express, please take me with you." With that, she left the beach with a wide, satisfied smile on her face.
