It's a middle-of-the-story mesh: the various characters have deep-rooted backgrounds that could be stories themselves. I'll insert it as needed in this outline, which I think would be about where it would end up if I wrote it. It's kind of long, and I think your comments will be best if you read the whole thing.
    P.S. I know I switch tenses. DX

The story starts with three characters: Stacy, Rick, and Peter (all names made up on the spot). Rick and Peter have been best friends since childhood. Stacy just moved into the city, Marshtal, and met the boys a bit previous to the beginning. Peter spent some time with her older sister, Jannet, and they are extremely close. Rick and Stacy get close through the beginning of the story, but she has met and grown close to three other men throughout her journey, and is wary.

They are climbing the mountain north-east of Marshtal. They need to retrieve a sacred object from a cave in the mountain. The pass is easy most days, but it's late winter, and fog and snow make visibility zero.

They get to the cave and retrieve the object, and then they stay the night there. With a magic mirror, they talk with loved ones. First Stacy talks with her mother and older sister. Peter then talks with Jannet and his family in private. Stacy and Rick have some bonding time here. When Peter returns, he gives the mirror to Rick to contact his family. Rick also talks in private, but Peter is too lovestruck to bond with Stacy.

In the morning, the fog is so thick that they have to hold hands. Before they get started, though, they run across an invading army. They can't see how many there are, and they get separated in the skirmish. The fog clears a bit and they find each other again. They get away, but the army leader has his best archer injure Rick.

The three have to stop later to bandage Rick. Stacy is white with shock and hardly comprehends anything for a while. The boys come to the conclusion that the army had planned to use the trail of blood to find their way down. Rick contacts his father via the mirror so he can gather a counter force and have a healer ready for their arrival. Rick's father tells them to come home immediately, regardless of the following army.

Once they got to the base of the mountain, the awaiting defense wasn't sure who was approaching through the fog. Eventually a keen-eyed archer recognizes Rick and shouts, "It's them! It's the prince!" Many others take up the cheer, and the healer comes forward with his buggy. Rick and Peter get in the back and a confused Stacy rides in the front.

At the castle, Rick is rushed to the infirmary, with Peter and Stacy following. Stacy wonders why Rick didn't tell her he was a prince, but she doesn't get an answer. Rick sends her away because he doesn't want her to have to watch his pain. A nursemaid sets up a hot bath and clean clothes for her.

As evening falls, Stacy is contacted by her grandmother, Grace. It was her who sent Stacy on the quest. A curse was over the land and only the sacred objects of the four elements could lift it. Now that Stacy had acquired the final object, wind, Grace could help Stacy through the magic part.

Grace had lived in Marshtal for a long time, even before her husband, Quincy died. She had a secret motive to live there: to kill the royal family. As a seasoned witch, she knew a secret about Rick and his father, that they were dragons, and if she used parts of their dragon forms, she could make the most powerful potions and spells. It so happens that the invading army also knows about the dragons, but they don't know who they are. They plan to capture the people, looking for the identifying mark.

When Grace found out Stacy was a guest at the castle, she hurried there to meet her granddaughter. She gave Stacy a difficult spell, pretending it was the one to lift the curse. Instead it would force the dead dragon into its dragon form. Grace leaves Stacy, disguised as Stacy to get close to Rick.

Rick is glad to see "Stacy," and gives her a hug. However, he thinks that something is not right with her. Grace pulls out a dagger to kill Rick, but Peter notices and stops her. Guards try to get her, but she uses magic to hinder their progress. She throws the dagger, but runs away before Rick dodged it, so she thought he was dead.

She gives the soldiers chase, until she turns into her regular self and sprawls on the ground. When the guards catch up, she complains that a girl knocked her to the ground and points them in the direction of Stacy. Grace leaves for her cottage.

Meanwhile, Quincy's ghost appeared to Stacy. Stacy is amazed and confused, but he says there's no time for questions. He explains that Grace has betrayed her, and warns her to get out. She leaves the room just as the soldiers hind her.

She doesn't know her way around the castle and ends up in the garden. Her grandfather explains that the garden is the perfect place to perform the curse-lifting spell. Stacy hurries to place the objects in position. Grace sees Stacy and uses her magic to slow her down. Stacy just manages to get the wind object in place before she passes out. The soldiers, Rick, and Peter have arrived up by her.

The spell begins. A wall of light surrounds the garden, and within the wall, the spell is killing everything, including Grace and Stacy. Rick, concerned for Stacy, She never knew exactly what swayed him.

As the story draws to a close, Peter proposes to Jannet. They get married in a grand celebration. Rick and Stacy weren't "official," but EVERYONE knew they liked each other. The rest is better left to imagination.

    The end.
